Abstract

We present 3D Surface Splatting (3DSS), the first differentiable surface splatting renderer for physically-based inverse rendering from multi-view images. Our central insight is that the surface separation problem at the heart of surface splatting admits a direct formulation in terms of the reconstruction kernels themselves. From this foundation we derive a coverage-based compositing model whose per-layer opacity arises directly from the accumulated Elliptical Weighted Average reconstruction weight, yielding anti-aliased silhouettes and informative visibility gradients at sparsely covered edges. Combined with forward microfacet shading under co-optimized HDR environment lighting and density-aware adaptive refinement, 3DSS jointly recovers shape, spatially-varying BRDF materials, and illumination. Because the optimized representation is a set of oriented surface samples, it bridges natively to mesh-based workflows via surface reconstruction from oriented point cloud methods. We evaluate 3DSS against mesh-based, implicit, and Gaussian-splatting baselines across geometry reconstruction, novel-view synthesis, and novel-illumination relighting.

InvSplat: Inverse Feed-Forward Scene Splatting

Inverse rendering aims to recover both 3D geometry and physically meaningful material properties from images, enabling applications such as relighting and novel view synthesis. Optimization-based methods achieve high fidelity but require costly per-scene fitting, while image-space learning-based approaches often suffer from multi-view inconsistencies and lack an explicit 3D representation for stable novel view rendering. We present a feed-forward multi-view reconstruction framework for inverse rendering that directly predicts a structured 3D Gaussian representation with intrinsic material attributes. Each Gaussian primitive is parameterized by mean, normal, opacity, rotation, scale, albedo, metallic, and roughness, enabling a disentangled and physically grounded scene representation. Our model integrates priors from a material estimation network with a multi-view 3D reconstruction backbone, allowing joint prediction of geometry and reflectance parameters in a single forward pass. Experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate improved multi-view consistency compared to 2D baselines, accurate material recovery, and stable novel view rendering. Our representation further supports physically-based relighting and more faithful modeling of view-dependent effects compared to existing RGB-based feed-forward reconstruction methods. High-Fidelity Surface Splatting-Based 3D Reconstruction from Multi-View Images

Multi-view mesh reconstruction remains a core challenge in computer graphics and vision, especially for recovering high-frequency geometry from sparse observations. Recent methods such as 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) and Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) rely on post-processing for mesh extraction, thereby limiting joint optimization of geometry and appearance. Implicit Moving Least Squares (IMLS) instead enables direct conversion of point clouds into signed distance and texture fields, supporting end-to-end reconstruction and rendering. However, existing IMLS formulations use exponential kernels that struggle with high-frequency detail. We introduce a compact polynomial kernel with local support and greater flexibility, allowing better control over frequency content and improved geometric fidelity. To further enhance fine details, we incorporate stochastic regularization with Laplacian filtering. Together, these improve the preservation of high-frequency structure while maintaining stable optimization. Experiments show state-of-the-art performance in both surface reconstruction and rendering, yielding more accurate geometry and sharper visuals from multi-view data.

QuerySplat: Decoupling Geometry and Appearance Representations in 3DGS Prediction

While feed-forward 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) enables efficient 3D reconstruction, achieving high-fidelity rendering remains challenging. Existing pixel-aligned approaches suffer from spatial inflexibility and massive structural redundancy, whereas query-based methods lack 3D priors and entangle geometry with appearance, yielding blurry, pose-dependent results. To overcome these deficiencies, we propose \textbf{QuerySplat}, a feed-forward 3DGS framework driven by geometric priors and explicit appearance decoupling. Specifically, we design a dual-branch query-based decoder: the geometry branch leverages a pretrained Vision Geometric Model for spatial understanding, which intrinsically endows QuerySplat with pose-free modeling capabilities, while the appearance branch recovers high-frequency details through a dedicated pathway separated from geometric attribute regression. Extensive experiments demonstrate that QuerySplat mitigates the blurry rendering issues of early query-based models and consistently outperforms pixel-aligned approaches in rendering fidelity. On the challenging DL3DV benchmark, it achieves state-of-the-art novel view synthesis performance, with average PSNR gains of 2.30 dB and 1.04 dB over the best pose-free and pose-required baselines, respectively.
