PersonaKit (PK): A Plug-and-Play Platform for User Testing Diverse Roles in Full-Duplex Dialogue

Abstract

As spoken dialogue systems expand beyond traditional assistant roles to encompass diverse personas -- such as authoritative instructors, uncooperative merchants, or distracted workers -- they require distinct, human-like turn-taking behaviors to maintain psychological immersion. However, current full-duplex systems often default to a rigid, overly accommodating ``always-yield'' policy during overlapping speech, which severely undermines character consistency for non-submissive roles. Evaluating alternative, persona-specific turn-taking strategies through empirical user studies is challenging because building real-time full-duplex test environments requires substantial engineering overhead. To address this, we present PersonaKit (PK), an open-source, low-latency web platform for the rapid prototyping and evaluation of conversational agents. Using intuitive JSON configurations, researchers can define personas, specify probabilistic interruption-handling behaviors (e.g., yield, hold, bridge, or override), and automatically deploy comparative A/B surveys. Through an in-the-wild evaluation with 8 distinct personas, we demonstrate that PersonaKit provides an extensible, end-to-end framework for studying complex sociolinguistic behaviors in next-generation spoken agents.

DuplexGen: Adaptive Synthesis of Human-AI Turn-Taking Dialogues

Turn-taking is a central component of full-duplex interaction. Which turn-taking behaviors are appropriate varies with the scenario, yet current models apply a single norm regardless of context. This limitation originates in their training data: human-human speech corpora capture natural timing phenomena but provide little role grounding or scenario-specific norms, while heuristic or prompted synthesis methods inject turn-taking behaviors without basing them on human preferences. We introduce DuplexGen, a framework for generating dialogues with scenario-adaptive turn-taking by calibrating LLM predictions against a small set of slot-level human preference annotations. In six cooperative and competitive tasks, human turn-taking preferences differ systematically, and DuplexGen aligns substantially more closely with those preferences than uncalibrated prompting or training solely on generic human-human data; a full-duplex model trained on DuplexGen-generated data exhibits distinctive, human-preferred turn-taking behaviors. These results show that human calibration, not corpus scale or prompt design alone, is what allows turn-taking synthesis to be scenario-specific.

DuplexSpeechBench-IFEval: Evaluating Implicit Instruction Following in Full-Duplex Voice Agents

Full-duplex voice agents must continuously decide when to listen, backchannel, interrupt, handle speech overlaps, take the floor, and yield. Existing benchmarks largely test these behaviors through explicit turn-management instructions, while deployed agents are often configured through roles or personas from which the appropriate conversational behavior must be inferred. We introduce DuplexSpeechBench-IFEval (DSB-IFEval) for evaluating implicit instruction-following in real-time spoken interaction. (DSB-IFEval) comprises 1,038 test cases spanning eight diverse assistant roles and evaluates five conditioning protocols for instruction-following: default behavior, explicit behavioral instructions, persona-implied behavior, combined persona--rule conditioning, and instruction conflict. We measure real-time floor management using a deterministic Instruction Adherence Score (IAS) and persona-consistent content using LLM-judged Persona Adherence Score (PAS). Across six real-time speech systems, we find architecture-dependent trade-offs. Full duplex models like F-Actor and PersonaPlex are more sensitive to whether conversational behavior is stated explicitly or must be inferred from a persona, with adherence dropping by 9.7% and 4.5%, respectively, under persona-only conditioning. In contrast, GPT-Realtime, MiniCPM-o, and Fun-Audio-Chat strongly adhere to persona-consistent content, but their floor behavior does not adapt across explicit and persona-only instructions and remains constrained on several proactive actions. We further find that even if systems reliably follow conflicting directives to their prescribed persona, they still struggle to override them under safety conflict. These results show that inferring the behavior implied by a role, executing it at the appropriate conversational moment, and resolving competing instructions remain distinct challenges for full-duplex voice agents.

RoleBreak: Benchmarking Long-Horizon Role-Playing Robustness in Spoken Dialogue

Speech-to-speech dialogue models increasingly support persona control, yet existing spoken role-playing benchmarks remain largely character-centric and short-horizon. This leaves open whether spoken dialogue models can sustain diverse roles over extended interactions, especially beyond predefined fictional characters. We introduce RoleBreak, an open benchmark for long-horizon role-playing robustness in spoken dialogue. RoleBreak contains 310 character-based and user-centered roles, 6,688 human-verified dialogue turns, and 11,743 fine-grained evaluation criteria, with 1,856 turns carrying expressive emotion targets for evaluating vocal emotion. Its scenarios are designed to stress role consistency, interaction quality, safety, and affect over extended conversations. We evaluate nine configurations spanning full-duplex, omni-modal, and cascaded ASR--LLM--TTS paradigms. We find four key patterns. First, current systems are substantially stronger at semantic role adherence than at vocal emotion. Second, semantic robustness remains brittle over long interactions: even the strongest evaluated system encounters its first persona and safety failures after only 10.4 and 11.6 turns on average. Third, scaling the LLM substantially improves semantic robustness and delays failure, but yields little improvement in vocal emotion. Finally, user vocal emotion affects role-playing behavior even when linguistic content is fixed. These findings highlight persistent gaps in both long-horizon robustness and vocal expressiveness in spoken role-playing systems.
