Linear Semantic Segmentation for Low-Resource Spoken Dialects

Abstract

Semantic segmentation is a core component of discourse analysis, yet existing models are primarily developed and evaluated on high-resource written text, limiting their effectiveness on low-resource spoken varieties. In particular, dialectal Arabic exhibits informal syntax, code-switching, and weakly marked discourse structure that challenge standard segmentation approaches. In this paper, we introduce a new multi-genre benchmark (more than 1000 samples) for semantic segmentation in conversational Arabic, focusing on dialectal discourse. The benchmark covers transcribed casual telephone conversations, code-switched podcasts, broadcast news, and expressive dialogue from novels, and was annotated and validated by native Arabic annotators. Using this benchmark, we show that segmentation models performing well on MSA news genres degrade on dialectal transcribed speech. We further propose a segmentation model that targets local semantic coherence and robustness to discourse discontinuities, consistently outperforming strong baselines on dialectal non-news genres. The benchmark and approach generalize to other low-resource spoken languages.

EDRAC: Benchmarking Arabic Dialect Reading Comprehension

Dialectal Arabic (DA) remains under-resourced compared to Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), particularly for machine reading comprehension (MRC) and question answering (QA). Existing Arabic QA benchmarks primarily focus on formal written MSA or multiple-choice QA, with limited coverage of naturally spoken dialects. Here, we aim to bridge this gap. We introduce EDRAC, the first large-scale benchmark for dialectal Arabic machine reading comprehension (MRC) and generative QA, covering five major dialects: Egyptian, Moroccan, Emirati, Syrian, and Saudi Arabic. EDRAC contains 499 passages derived from naturally occurring spoken interactions and 4,977 corresponding QA pairs generated through a human--LLM collaborative pipeline combining iterative generation, LLM-as-a-judge evaluation, and human verification. We benchmark Arabic-centric and multilingual LLMs on EDRAC using lexical and semantic metrics. Our results reveal substantial gaps between semantic answer quality and dialectal fidelity, highlighting the limitations of existing evaluation metrics for dialectal Arabic generation. EDRAC provides a realistic and challenging MRC benchmark for future research on dialectal Arabic NLP.

DialectS2S: End-to-End Speech Dialogue Modeling for Low-Resource Chinese Dialects

Current end-to-end speech dialogue models are primarily optimized for mainstream languages and remain limited in low-resource dialect scenarios due to the scarcity of dialect speech data. Moreover, during dialect adaptation, the semantic representation space of speech dialogue models continuously evolves, while conventional speech supervision remains unchanged, leading to semantic inconsistency between hidden representations and speech targets and degrading speech stability and naturalness. To address these issues, we propose DialectS2S, an end-to-end speech dialogue model for Chinese dialects. We first develop a scalable dialect speech dialogue synthesis pipeline for efficient data construction. We further introduce a two-stage post-training strategy with self-aligned speech supervision, which aligns the semantic content of speech supervision with the evolved semantic representations of the model to improve dialect speech generation quality. Experimental results show that DialectS2S consistently outperforms existing baselines across multiple Chinese dialects in speech dialogue, achieving substantial improvements in dialect consistency, response quality, and speech intelligibility. Our work provides an efficient and scalable solution for end-to-end speech dialogue modeling in low-resource dialect scenarios. To facilitate future research and practical applications, we fully open-source the DialectS2S framework, including model checkpoints, training datasets, and fine-tuning code.

Dziri Voicebot: An End-to-End Low-Resource Speech-to-Speech Conversational System for Algerian Dialect

Automatic speech and language technologies are still heavily biased toward high-resource languages, limiting their applicability to dialectal and low-resource settings such as Algerian Dialect. This language presents additional challenges including lack of standardized orthography, frequent codeswitching with French, and scarcity of annotated speech resources. This paper addresses the problem of building a complete speech-to-speech conversational system for Algerian Dialect. We propose a modular pipeline integrating automatic speech recognition, natural language understanding, retrieval-augmented generation, and text-to-speech synthesis within a unified architecture. This work is the continuation of our previous work on Algerian dialectal conversational systems Bechiri and Lanasri [2026], extending it from text-based dialogue modeling to full speech-based interaction. We constructed dedicated datasets for ASR, NLU, and TTS in the telecom domain and fine-tune pretrained models for each component. The ASR system is built on Whisper-based adaptation, while the NLU module combines transformer-based embeddings with a task-oriented dialogue framework. A neural TTS system is trained on a newly collected dialectal corpus to enable spoken response generation. Experimental results show strong performance across all components, including low word error rate for ASR, high intent classification and entity recognition scores for NLU, and stable speech synthesis quality. The proposed system provides a reproducible baseline for end-to-end conversational modeling in Algerian Dialect.
