Abstract

This demo paper describes the development of the AI Teaching & Learning Assistant, a modular Moodle plugin that leverages Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to deliver high-quality, hallucination-free education. The system employs a dual-centric design, providing students with interactive, Socratic-based tutoring and educators with a "human-in-the-loop" workspace for supervised content generation. By grounding Large Language Model (LLM) responses in teacher-provided materials, the assistant addresses the risks of misinformation while encouraging deep conceptual mastery. Evaluation via the Ragas (LLM-as-a-Judge) framework and a preliminary user study confirms its effectiveness, achieving faithfulness scores up to 0.97 and a 4.00/5.00 recommendation rate.

MisEdu-RAG: A Misconception-Aware Dual-Hypergraph RAG for Novice Math Teachers

Novice math teachers often encounter students' mistakes that are difficult to diagnose and remediate. Misconceptions are especially challenging because teachers must explain what went wrong and how to solve them. Although many existing large language model (LLM) platforms can assist in generating instructional feedback, these LLMs loosely connect pedagogical knowledge and student mistakes, which might make the guidance less actionable for teachers. To address this gap, we propose MisEdu-RAG, a dual-hypergraph-based retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) framework that organizes pedagogical knowledge as a concept hypergraph and real student mistake cases as an instance hypergraph. Given a query, MisEdu-RAG performs a two-stage retrieval to gather connected evidence from both layers and generates a response grounded in the retrieved cases and pedagogical principles. We evaluate on \textit{MisstepMath}, a dataset of math mistakes paired with teacher solutions, as a benchmark for misconception-aware retrieval and response generation across topics and error types. Evaluation results on \textit{MisstepMath} show that, compared with baseline models, MisEdu-RAG improves token-F1 by 10.95% and yields up to 15.3% higher five-dimension response quality, with the largest gains on \textit{Diversity} and \textit{Empowerment}. To verify its applicability in practical use, we further conduct a pilot study through a questionnaire survey of 221 teachers and interviews with 6 novices. The findings suggest that MisEdu-RAG provides diagnosis results and concrete teaching moves for high-demand misconception scenarios. Overall, MisEdu-RAG demonstrates strong potential for scalable teacher training and AI-assisted instruction for misconception handling. DeepTutor: Towards Agentic Personalized Tutoring

Education is one of the most promising real-world applications for Large Language Models (LLMs). However, current LLMs rely on static pre-training knowledge and lack adaptation to individual learners, while existing RAG systems fall short in delivering personalized, guided feedback. To bridge this gap, we present DeepTutor, a fully open-source agentic framework that unifies citation-grounded problem tutoring with difficulty-calibrated question generation. A hybrid personalization engine couples static knowledge grounding with dynamic learner memory, continuously adapting each interaction to the student's evolving needs. The same personalization substrate further extends to adaptive learning workflows, interactive books, and proactive multi-channel tutoring agents. To evaluate personalized tutoring, we introduce TutorBench, an interactive benchmark incorporating customized learner profiles grounded in university-level curricula across five domains. We further propose an LLM-based first-person interactive evaluation protocol that conducts assessments via a profile-driven student simulator. Complementary evaluations on established benchmarks, supported by human-alignment and ablation studies, confirm the framework's robustness and general utility. Results show that DeepTutor improves personalized metrics by 10.8% on average and strengthens general agentic reasoning across five backbone models by 29.4%.

PEARL: Training Socratic Tutors with Pedagogically Aligned Reinforcement Learning

Large Language Models (LLMs) show strong potential as educational tutors. Existing approaches typically train them to solve problems and provide correct answers, but this problem-solving-centered paradigm overlooks key requirements of effective tutoring: progressive guidance and the coordination of multiple pedagogical objectives across multi-turn interactions. Developing such tutors remains challenging because student behavior varies substantially with individual knowledge states, pedagogical effectiveness depends on multiple factors beyond final-answer correctness, and coordinating these objectives over tutor-student interactions is inherently difficult. To address these challenges, we propose PEARL, a PEdagogically Aligned Reinforcement Learning framework for training Socratic tutoring agents. First, we introduce a controllable student simulator that disentangles latent cognitive states from response generation, enabling simulation of diverse abilities and misconceptions. Second, we develop a pedagogically aligned reward model that jointly assesses pedagogical quality and objective correctness. Finally, we propose a stable multi-objective reinforcement learning approach that balances competing pedagogical objectives during tutor training. Experiments across multiple benchmarks show that PEARL performs competitively against tutoring-specific open-source systems and leading proprietary LLMs.
