Abstract

In this work, we introduce GELATO (Geometry-preserving Embeddings via Locked Aligned TOwers), a novel approach to multimodal embedding models. We build on the VLM-style architecture, in which non-text encoders are adapted to produce input for a language model, which in turn generates embeddings for all varieties of input. We present the result: the jina-embeddings-v5-omni suite, a pair of models that encode text, image, audio, and video input into a single semantic embedding space. GELATO extends the two Jina Embeddings v5 Text models to support additional modality by adding encoders for images and audio. The backbone text embedding models and the added non-text modality encoders remain frozen. We only trained the connecting components, representing 0.35% of the total weights of the joint model. Training is therefore much more efficient than full-parameter retraining. Additionally, the language model remains effectively unaltered, producing exactly the same embeddings for text inputs as the Jina Embeddings v5 Text models. Our evaluations show that GELATO produces results that are competitive with the state-of-the-art, yielding nearly equal performance to larger multimodal embedding models.

Gemini Embedding 2: A Native Multimodal Embedding Model from Gemini

We introduce Gemini Embedding 2, a native multimodal embedding model that allows embedding video, audio, image, and text modalities in a unified representation space. We leverage the multimodal capabilities of Gemini to produce embeddings for arbitrary combinations of interleaved inputs across all these modalities that generalize well across a wide variety of tasks. Applying large-scale contrastive learning in a multi-task multi-stage training setup, we achieve state-of-the-art performance on key embedding benchmarks including unimodal, cross-modal, and multimodal retrieval spanning a diverse set of tasks. We show that our embedding model demonstrates strong performance (with a score of 62.9 R@1 on MSCOCO, 68.8 NDCG@10 on Vatex, 69.9 on MTEB multilingual and 84.0 on MTEB Code) across a variety of tasks surpassing the performance of specialized models. These unified capabilities make Gemini Embedding 2 a promising candidate for downstream use cases such as RAG, recommendation and search. Furthermore, its robust zero-shot performance across distinct fields - from astronomy and bioscience to fine arts and the culinary arts - establishes it as a highly reliable, out-of-the-box representation even for specialized domains.

Can Frontier LLMs Match Natively Multimodal Embeddings? A Comparison on Hard-Negative Text-to-Image Retrieval

Multimodal retrieval and classification across different types of media, spanning text, images, video and audio, has traditionally relied on dual-encoder models that align visual and textual representations through contrastive learning. The March 2026 release of Gemini Embedding 2, Google's first natively multimodal embedding model to map text, images, video, audio, and documents into a single shared space, raises competition among multimodal retrieval systems. Simultaneously, frontier Large language models (LLMs) have also demonstrated strong visual understanding, raising the question of whether they can serve as effective zero-shot rankers. Our study provides the first direct comparison of native multimodal embeddings against LLM-based visual ranking on Flickr30k. We observe that GPT-4.1 and Claude Sonnet 4.6 perform on par with Gemini Embedding 2. Additionally, once embeddings are precomputed, multimodal embeddings are better suited for low-latency applications.

Fusion Embedding: A Unified Embedding Space for Text, Image, Video, and Audio

A single embedding space that covers text, images, video, and audio lets one index serve every query a user can pose. Embedding models built on vision-language backbones now lead text/image/video retrieval benchmarks but lack audio entirely, while audio-text retrieval is led by specialist systems that serve no other modality. We present the Fusion Embedding family, which adds audio to a frozen vision-language embedding base whose parameters are never updated: generation 1 (fusion-embedding-1) trains only a 16.4M-parameter connector between a frozen audio tower and the frozen base, and generation 2 (fusion-embedding-2) adds modality-gated deep adapters (44.2M parameters) whose branch never executes on text, image, or video inputs: their outputs are bit-for-bit those of the released base, verified after every training run. Because the base already binds text, images, and video, aligning audio to text alone makes audio-image retrieval emerge, with zero paired audio-visual training data. Alongside the recipe we map its design space with controlled negative results (rewriting training captions with an LLM, substituting a leaderboard-stronger audio tower, and widening the connector each reduce retrieval) and with training-protocol findings that we expect to transfer to any frozen decoder-LM embedding backbone. Both generations train in hours on a single GPU. Weights, code, and the evaluation harness are openly released.
