simpleposter: a simple baseline for product poster generation

Abstract

Product poster generation poses distinct challenges beyond general poster design, requiring both faithful preservation of product appearance and precise control over dense, multi-line text layouts. Prior methods typically adopt inpainting frameworks augmented with auxiliary modules such as ControlNet and OCR encoders. However, these approaches introduce architectural complexity and computational overhead while still suffering from text errors and subject extension artifacts. We present SimplePoster, a simple yet effective inpainting-based framework that achieves faithful subject preservation and accurate, position-controllable text rendering without external controllers. Our approach builds on two observations: (1) full-parameter fine-tuning of the base model effectively suppresses subject extension, outperforming ControlNet-based alternatives; and (2) a zero-cost character-level position encoding enables geometry-aware text generation without dedicated layout modules. Experiments show that SimplePoster achieves a 98.7%98.7\% subject preservation rate, compared to 55.2%55.2\% for SeedEdit 3.0 and 85.3%85.3\% for PosterMaker, while also improving text rendering accuracy. Code, models, benchmark and a part of training data will be available at https://github.com/Alibaba-YuFeng/SIMPLEPOSTER

PosterHarness: Turning Scientific Poster Generation into an Auditable Instruction-Following Benchmark

Text-rich image models can now design poster-scale layouts, but we lack ways to measure whether they honor scientific communication contracts: legible labels, prescribed aspect ratios, and -- above all -- abstaining from fabricated scientific figures. We present POSTERHARNESS, an auditable harness reframing poster generation as measurable instruction-following tasks, with a pilot benchmark and failure taxonomy. POSTERHARNESS uses a placeholder-first contract to separate two jobs models otherwise conflate. The model performs visual-summary design: typography, reading path, color, and background -- but never draws data-bearing figures. Every figure region must be an empty labeled placeholder; a deterministic compositor inserts real source-paper figures at detected coordinates. This makes properties measurable: placeholder count and ID accuracy, blankness, aspect-ratio compliance, abstention from synthesized graphics, public-text hygiene, and source-figure provenance -- with failures logged as explicit rejections, not hidden in plausible-looking output. We instantiate the harness on 12 papers (6 HEP, 6 AI/ML-adjacent) and report three findings. (i) A counterfactual probe shows the placeholder contract drives VLM-counted synthesized figures from 34 to 0 across three papers. (ii) A failure taxonomy identifies blocking contracts: placeholder geometry, placeholder QA, template critic, and public text. (iii) Comparison with Paper2Poster shows a trade-off: PosterHarness yields higher-resolution artifacts, lower white-canvas fraction, and stronger VLM visual preference; the deterministic baseline retains slightly more PosterQuiz-style information and runs faster. We report this as regime characterization, not a superiority claim. All artifacts, prompts, manifests, and audit scripts are released as a reusable evaluation component.

Any2Poster: Any-Source Poster Generation Across Modalities and Domains

Visual posters are a compact medium for communicating dense information, yet progress on automatic poster generation remains difficult to measure because existing evaluations are often restricted to paper-only inputs, narrow domains, or surface-level visual similarity. We introduce Any2Poster Bench, a benchmark for any-source poster generation that evaluates systems across eight input modalities--PDFs, URLs, PPTX, DOCX, Markdown, LaTeX, notebooks, and videos--and five content domains. Any2Poster Bench pairs each source with quiz-based probes of verbatim factual retention and interpretive understanding, together with VLM-based judgments of visual quality, layout, readability, content completeness, and logical flow, enabling reproducible assessment of both information fidelity and visual communication. To instantiate and validate this benchmark, we further present Any2Poster Agent, an end-to-end reference agent that parses heterogeneous sources, organizes salient content, plans poster layouts, renders posters, and iteratively refines them using visual feedback. On Any2Poster Bench, Any2Poster Agent achieves 87.25% average accuracy across input modalities and 87.28% across content domains. On PaperQuiz-style evaluation, where prior paper-to-poster agents are directly comparable, Any2Poster Agent improves over PosterAgent-4o from 51.06-51.33% to 72.58% overall accuracy and from 116-121 to 145.16 in density-augmented score. Together, Any2Poster Bench and Any2Poster Agent provide a reusable evaluation resource and a competitive baseline for studying multimodal, domain-general poster generation.

PosterMELD: Multi-Agent Paper-to-Poster Generation for Controllable Design Diversity with Editable Print-Ready Outputs

Scientific poster construction compresses a long multimodal paper into a readable, editable canvas. Existing systems hide request-level failures by scoring only completed outputs; direct image generation is not element-editable, while coding-agent workflows are costly. PosterMELD is a template-conditioned multi-agent pipeline: capacity-aware slots guide writing before rendering, and deterministic gates plus vision-language model (VLM) review route failures to bounded repair. Each accepted request exports editable PowerPoint (PPTX) and Portable Network Graphics (PNG) artifacts; explicit design controls yield same-paper variants. Across 621 papers, Print-Ready Rate (PRR) counts requests passing geometric, readability, asset-integrity, and obvious-factual-error checks, with native editability reported separately. A frozen VLM assigns conditional Craftsmanship-Harmony-Expressiveness (CHE) scores to print-ready outputs. PosterMELD attains 81.3% PRR, 3.4 times P2P's rate and 5.2 times PosterGen's, and the highest conditional CHE among generated methods with multiple print-ready outputs. Native editability and explicit design controls are retained at a mean cost of USD 0.38 per request, 3.5% of Codex+Skill's.
