Infini-News: Efficiently Queryable Access to 1.3 Billion Processed Common Crawl News Articles

Abstract

Large-scale news corpora support a wide range of research in Computational Social Science and NLP, yet access remains constrained: commercial archives impose prohibitive costs and licensing restrictions, while open alternatives like Common Crawl's CC-News require terabyte-scale storage and computationally intensive processing. We present Infini-News, a retrieval toolkit and index for the entire CC-News archive from August 2016 to the latest available snapshot. Our contributions are threefold. First, we extract, clean the text, and parse the structured metadata of over 1.35B articles. Second, we enrich the corpus with language detection using three frontier language classifiers (GlotLID, lingua, and CommonLingua), and with multi-source geographic attribution that resolves a country of origin for 83.4% of articles across 222 countries. Third, we construct Infini-gram indexes: suffix-array structures that let researchers search the full archive for arbitrary text patterns in sub-second time. Together, these resources lower the barrier to longitudinal, cross-national media research.

news-crawler-LM: A Small Long-Context Model For High-Quality News Crawling

Extracting structured content from news pages remains challenging due to heterogeneous HTML layouts, inconsistent markup, and substantial boilerplate such as navigation elements and advertisements. Rule-based news crawlers can achieve high extraction accuracy by encoding site-specific structure, but require manual configuration in order to generalize to new publishers. Large language models provide a more flexible alternative by reducing the need for handcrafted rules, but their high computational cost limits practical deployment. In this paper, we introduce news-crawler-LM, a small long-context language model fine-tuned on high-quality, human-validated extractions from the Fundus news-crawling library. Our model converts raw HTML into plaintext and structured JSON, including fields such as headline, author, publication date, and article body. In our experiments, news-crawler-LM outperforms strong baselines in HTML-to-Markdown and HTML-to-JSON extraction, improving performance by +4.8 BLEU and +6.1 METEOR in the HTML-to-Markdown task, and by +2.2 BLEU and +4.1 METEOR in the HTML-to-JSON task. However, we also observe that our model only slightly better compared to other rule-based parsing libraries on the HTML-to-plaintext task in evaluations on previously unseen publishers. We release all models and artifacts to the research community.

NewsRECON: News Article Retrieval for Image Contextualization

Identifying when and where a news image was taken is crucial for journalists and forensic experts to produce credible stories and debunk misinformation. While many existing methods rely on reverse image search (RIS) engines, these tools often fail to return results, thereby limiting their practical applicability. In this work, we address the challenging scenario where RIS evidence is unavailable. We investigate the potential of news article corpora as an alternative to RIS, linking images to relevant articles to infer their dates and locations from article metadata. We evaluate the performance of a news article retrieval pipeline, NewsRECON, which leverages a corpus of over 85,000 articles. Experiments on the TARA dataset show that NewsRECON outperforms prior work and can be combined with a multimodal large language model (MLLM) to achieve new SOTA results in the absence of RIS evidence. Furthermore, NewsRECON generalizes to the 5Pils-OOC benchmark despite geographic and temporal shifts. We make our code available.

MAPLE: Metadata Conditioned LLM Pretraining for Locale-Aware Question Answering

Large language models can memorize competing locale-specific facts yet fail to select among them when the locale changes, defaulting instead to a single globally dominant answer. We formalize this as localized knowledge disambiguation and introduce LocalNewsQA, an 18,700-item English-news benchmark that pairs the same question across two locales and scores whether a model actually switches its answer when the locale changes. We also introduce MAPLE, a controlled family of decoder-only models pretrained with document-level geographic metadata (source URL, country, and continent) already present in the training corpus, and compare it to metadata-free controls trained on identical data with the same token budget, architecture, and optimization. In controlled experiments at 1B and 3B, with inference-time metadata fixed, pretraining with metadata in MAPLE produces measurable switching and improves accuracy on questions whose correct answer depends on locale. Ablations and external-benchmark evaluations further suggest that locale-conditioned prediction benefits from geographic provenance learned during pretraining and that these benefits strengthen at larger model sizes.
