Abstract

Novel view synthesis has been significantly advanced by NeRFs and 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS), which require ordering volumetric samples or primitives for correct color blending. While the recent Gaussian-Enhanced Surfels (GES) enable high-performance, sort-free rendering, they suffer from aliasing artifacts and suboptimal reconstruction. To address these limitations, we propose DP-GES, a novel representation that augments opaque surfels with semi-transparent boundaries and leverages Depth Peeling to establish accurate per-pixel ordering. This design enables sort-free Gaussian splatting with correct transmittance modulation, effectively eliminating aliasing and popping artifacts while facilitating a fully differentiable joint optimization. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves superior reconstruction quality and compares favorably against state-of-the-art techniques across a wide range of scenes.

Gaussian Sculpting: End-to-End Controllable Surface Reconstruction via Field Optimization

3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has recently enabled real-time novel view synthesis with impressive quality. However, it struggles to recover accurate surfaces under limited viewpoints and due to the inherent irregularity of Gaussian primitives. The resulting geometric errors are notoriously difficult to correct manually. To address these issues, we propose Gaussian Sculpting, a fully differentiable end-to-end framework for high-quality surface reconstruction. Our key insight is to anchor Gaussians onto an evolving differentiable surface, allowing them to guide signed distance field (SDF) optimization instead of extracting the surface only during post-processing. To enable stable gradient isolation during joint optimization, we design a bi-level training strategy in which the outer loop optimizes the geometry represented by the SDF, while the inner loop updates the Gaussians with the geometry fixed. We further impose constraints on Gaussian parameters to ensure consistency with the underlying surface, thereby improving both geometric and appearance fidelity during optimization. In addition, we introduce a multi-resolution subdivision scheme based on octree-like partitioning to preserve fine details while reducing memory consumption. Experiments on object-level scenes demonstrate that our method effectively removes redundant surfaces, recovers missing structures caused by limited viewpoints, and achieves strong reconstruction quality even at relatively low resolutions.

Beyond Heuristics: Learnable Density Control for 3D Gaussian Splatting

While 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has demonstrated impressive real-time rendering performance, its efficacy remains constrained by a reliance on heuristic density control. Despite numerous refinements to these handcrafted rules, such methods inherently lack the flexibility to adapt to diverse scenes with complex geometries. In this paper, we propose a paradigm shift for density control from rigid heuristics to fully learnable policies. Specifically, we introduce \textbf{LeGS}, a framework that reformulates density control as a parameterized policy network optimized via Reinforcement Learning (RL). Central to our approach is the tailored effective reward function grounded in sensitivity analysis, which precisely quantifies the marginal contribution of individual Gaussians to reconstruction quality. To maintain computational tractability, we derive a closed-form solution that reduces the complexity of reward calculation from O(N2)O(N^2) to O(N)O(N). Extensive experiments on the Mip-NeRF 360, Tanks & Temples, and Deep Blending datasets demonstrate that \textbf{LeGS} significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods, striking a superior balance between reconstruction quality and efficiency. PAGaS: Pixel-Aligned 1DoF Gaussian Splatting for Depth Refinement

Gaussian Splatting (GS) has emerged as an efficient approach for high-quality novel view synthesis. While early GS variants struggled to accurately model the scene's geometry, recent advancements constraining the Gaussians' spread and shapes, such as 2D Gaussian Splatting, have significantly improved geometric fidelity. In this paper, we present Pixel-Aligned 1DoF Gaussian Splatting (PAGaS) that adapts the GS representation from novel view synthesis to the multi-view stereo depth task. Our key contribution is modeling a pixel's depth using one-degree-of-freedom (1DoF) Gaussians that remain tightly constrained during optimization. Unlike existing approaches, our Gaussians' positions and sizes are restricted by the back-projected pixel volumes, leaving depth as the sole degree of freedom to optimize. PAGaS produces highly detailed depths, as illustrated in Figure 1. We quantitatively validate these improvements on top of reference geometric and learning-based multi-view stereo baselines on challenging 3D reconstruction benchmarks.
