When Jokes Cross the Line: Analyzing Regular Humor and Dark Humor in YouTube Shorts

Abstract

Video platforms such as YouTube have reshaped how users engage with entertainment and information, emphasizing brief, highly engaging content such as Shorts. Within this ecosystem, certain content occupies a gray area where it remains allowed but may still have unintended negative effects on some audiences. To study this problem, we introduce TwistedHumor, a dataset of 1,211 YouTube Shorts paired with 33,041 related comments, with hand annotations for humor presence, humor type, harm, topic, rhetorical devices, and stand up context. Beyond dataset creation, we present a multi view analysis of how humor and harm appear in short form social media. Using LLooM based concept induction over video descriptions, we find that dark humor frequently clusters around themes of critique, coping, awkwardness, and identity expression rather than appearing as a single uniform category. We further analyze audience response through linked comments and show that regular humor is associated with more positive sentiment, while dark humor receives more mixed, neutral, and sometimes more toxic reactions. Finally, we evaluate large language models against human annotations and find that they perform better on stand up comedy compared to shorter jokes. Together, these results position TwistedHumor not only as a new benchmark, but as an empirical study of the gray area between humor and harm in short form video, highlighting the need for context aware moderation and more robust multimodal evaluation.

MultiHuSE: A Multimodal Dataset for Humour Styles and Emotions

Computational recognition of verbal humour remains a challenging task, requiring an understanding of language, delivery style, emotions, and cultural context. Most existing approaches focus on binary classification and lack datasets that capture psychological dimensions of humour alongside variations in expression. We introduce MultiHuSE, a multimodal dataset comprising 2,407 high-definition videos of 50 demographically diverse actors performing 1,463 text samples across four psychological humour styles (affiliative, aggressive, self-enhancing, and self-deprecating), as well as neutral content. A subset is additionally annotated for underlying emotions. The dataset uniquely captures multiple actor interpretations of the same texts, enabling systematic analysis of expressive diversity. Baseline experiments show that multimodal fusion outperforms unimodal approaches (80.1% vs. 77.4% accuracy) in humour style classification, with particularly strong gains for affiliative humour (66% to 74%). While text provides the strongest individual signal, fusion models deliver meaningful improvements. We hope that MultiHuSE provides empirical support for psychological theories linking humour and emotion, while also opening new avenues for research in human communication, well-being, and AI-driven interaction. The dataset is available for academic use under an End-User Licence Agreement.

Computational Humor with Multimodal LLMs: Methods, Datasets, Evaluation, and Challenges

Multimodal humor in memes, cartoons, and comics remains difficult for AI systems because intended meaning depends on non-literal mechanisms, shared cultural knowledge, and communicative intent rather than literal scene description. This survey focuses on visual humor understanding in single-image and multi-panel artifacts, while treating humor generation as an emerging downstream frontier. We position the literature against prior humor, sarcasm, and general MLLM surveys and organize it using a capability-centric hierarchy spanning recognition, interpretation and reasoning, and generation. Under this lens, we synthesize benchmark design, evaluation protocols, and modeling paradigms, tracing the field's shift from task-specific fusion models to large-model approaches based on multimodal alignment, evidence-grounded reasoning, and controlled generation. We conclude by highlighting the main barriers to progress: shortcut-prone evaluation, limited cultural and narrative coverage, weak evidence grounding, and unresolved safety and ownership concerns.

Re-defining Humor Data Objects for AI Humor Research

In most existing AI humor research, humor was treated as either "present" or "not present." We explore the concept of humor as a social interaction with context and explanations. During this project, we defined a humor reasoning data object and developed a way to prompt LLMs to generate an explanation of humor effective for general population. We iterated from an earlier prompt to an improved prompt, found that the later version reduced important errors, and then scaled generation to a large number of data objects which have the potential to enable data synthesis and data augmentation for AI humor research. Our main takeaway is that better prompting of an LLM improves humor explanation quality, especially by handling missing context, multi-modality, and transcript issues more carefully.
