PolySpeech-100: A Large-Scale Benchmark for Speech Understanding Across 100+ Languages and Dialects

Abstract

While End-to-End (E2E) Speech-Large Language Models (Speech-LLMs) are rapidly evolving, their evaluation methodologies remain limited to the era of simple transcription. Existing benchmarks suffer from three critical limitations: a pronounced bias towards high-resource languages, a focus on low-level recognition (ASR) rather than semantic reasoning, and a neglect of regional dialects. To bridge this gap, we introduce PolySpeech-100, a massive-scale benchmark designed to assess `native-level' speech comprehension across 110 linguistic variants. We employ a novel hybrid construction pipeline that augments gold-standard human recordings with instruction-driven synthetic speech, allowing us to cover 19 distinct Chinese dialects and over 80 low-resource languages. Extensive evaluation of 22 state-of-the-art models (including Gemini-3, GPT-Audio, and Qwen2.5-Omni) yields pivotal insights. First, we demonstrate that open-source E2E models outperform Cascade (ASR+LLM) systems on heavy dialects, proving that direct audio processing preserves critical paralinguistic cues and prosodic features (e.g., intonation, stress) that are often lost in standard transcription. Second, we reveal a significant performance gap: while commercial models maintain robustness, open-source models suffer catastrophic degradation on low-resource languages. Finally, counter-intuitively, we observe that under standard zero-shot settings, Chain-of-Thought prompting frequently degrades speech understanding performance for most evaluated models, revealing a potential modality alignment gap in current architectures. SEA-SpeechBench: A Large-Scale Multitask Benchmark for Speech Understanding Across Southeast Asia

The rapid advancement of audio and multimodal large language models has unlocked transformative speech understanding capabilities, yet evaluation frameworks remain predominantly English-centric, leaving Southeast Asian (SEA) languages critically underrepresented. We introduce SEA-SpeechBench, to the best of our knowledge, the first large-scale multitask benchmark that evaluates speech understanding in 11 SEA languages through 97,194 samples across 99 evaluation sets and 597 hours of curated audio data. Our benchmark comprises 9 diverse tasks across 3 categories: speech processing (automatic speech recognition, speech translation, spoken question answering), paralinguistic analysis (emotion, gender, age, speaker recognition), and temporal understanding, a novel dimension featuring timestamped content queries and temporal localization within extended audio sequences up to 3 minutes. We implement multilingual prompting in both native SEA languages and English to reflect user interactions with audio-language models. Evaluation of leading open-source and proprietary systems reveals marked performance gaps. Across all models, performance remains underwhelming on temporal understanding, emotion recognition, and speech translation. Prompting in low-resource languages such as Burmese and Tamil lags behind English by up to 41 percentage points. DialectS2S: End-to-End Speech Dialogue Modeling for Low-Resource Chinese Dialects

Current end-to-end speech dialogue models are primarily optimized for mainstream languages and remain limited in low-resource dialect scenarios due to the scarcity of dialect speech data. Moreover, during dialect adaptation, the semantic representation space of speech dialogue models continuously evolves, while conventional speech supervision remains unchanged, leading to semantic inconsistency between hidden representations and speech targets and degrading speech stability and naturalness. To address these issues, we propose DialectS2S, an end-to-end speech dialogue model for Chinese dialects. We first develop a scalable dialect speech dialogue synthesis pipeline for efficient data construction. We further introduce a two-stage post-training strategy with self-aligned speech supervision, which aligns the semantic content of speech supervision with the evolved semantic representations of the model to improve dialect speech generation quality. Experimental results show that DialectS2S consistently outperforms existing baselines across multiple Chinese dialects in speech dialogue, achieving substantial improvements in dialect consistency, response quality, and speech intelligibility. Our work provides an efficient and scalable solution for end-to-end speech dialogue modeling in low-resource dialect scenarios. To facilitate future research and practical applications, we fully open-source the DialectS2S framework, including model checkpoints, training datasets, and fine-tuning code.

ESCUCHA: A Spanish Speech Benchmark for Heterogeneous Acoustic Conditions

As large audio language models (LALMs) advance, robust evaluation frameworks have become essential. In this context, Spanish speech understanding under realistic acoustic conditions has received particularly little attention. We introduce ESCUCHA, the first Spanish speech understanding benchmark designed to evaluate LALMs across heterogeneous acoustic conditions and reasoning abilities. ESCUCHA comprises 1,000 human-curated questions paired with audio, totaling 162.9 hours sourced directly ``from the wild'' rather than drawn from existing datasets, with durations ranging from a few seconds to over 80 minutes. The benchmark emphasizes reasoning, spanning 9 perceptual and 10 reasoning categories, and it captures linguistic diversity through multiple Spanish accents and non-normative speech. ESCUCHA further includes multi-audio questions, spoken questions, and audio instructions, and it flags which questions support open-ended evaluation. Benchmarking several state-of-the-art multimodal and speech models reveals substantial performance gaps relative to trained humans.
