Resonant Minds: Closed-Loop Social Avatars with Theory of Mind

Abstract

Creating lifelike digital humans with genuine social intelligence requires unifying cognitive reasoning and multimodal generation within a coherent framework. Current approaches treat these as separate tasks: Large Language Models excel at dialogue but lack embodied expression, while diffusion-based talking head models achieve visual fidelity but ignore social cognition. To bridge this gap, we propose a closed-loop dual-agent framework integrating perception, social reasoning, and expression into a continuous interaction cycle. The perception module analyzes partners' multimodal behaviors from video, while the social reasoning module infers hidden mental states through Theory of Mind and selects responses via an ensemble mechanism. The expression module then generates emotion-controllable videos that jointly synthesize speaker speech and facial expressions with listener reactive behaviors, capturing bidirectional dynamics absent in prior work. We further construct a hierarchical Persona-Scenario dataset with psychologically grounded personas and private social goals to support evaluation under information asymmetry. Experiments on this dataset demonstrate competitive or superior performance on both dialogue quality and video generation metrics. Notably, our method surpasses even the full-information Script mode on key dialogue quality dimensions, suggesting that explicit mental state inference under uncertainty can elicit more thoughtful dialogue than unrestricted information access. Conversational Human Audio-visual Talking Dialogue Generation

Large-scale dyadic interactive audio-visual dialogue (DIAD) datasets provide fundamental data resources for developing humanoid interactive virtual agents and digital humans. However, collecting such data is time-consuming, expensive, and ethically sensitive. To address this, we propose CHAT, a new dyadic interactive audio-visual dialogue generation (DIADG) framework that generates diverse, paired, and mutually responsive speech-face dialogue clips from a single textual prompt. CHAT unifies large language models and talking face models with interactive audio and facial behaviour refinement modules, enabling the generation of aligned dyadic dialogue clips with diverse contents and facial identities. Experiments show that CHAT outperforms existing related methods designed for similar tasks under both objective and subjective evaluations. Moreover, our synthesised CHAT-AVD-50k dataset serves as effective pre-training data for downstream interactive head generation, consistently improving PerFRDiff and ReactDiff on REACT 2024. CHAT offers a scalable alternative to the costly and ethically sensitive collection of real dyadic interaction data.

Archon: A Unified Multimodal Model for Holistic Digital Human Generation

Digital humans are fundamental to immersive interaction, yet creating a unified model for holistic modalities, including text, audio, motion, and visual content, remains an open challenge. In this paper, we present Archon, a fully pretrained, human-centric unified multimodal model for holistic avatar generation. Archon unifies seven modalities with modality-specific tokenizers, and a native autoregressive unified multimodal model pretrained on synchronized modalities and 72 diverse tasks to model holistic joint distributions. To address the token explosion challenge in high-fidelity talking videos, we introduce a memory-efficient semantic video reparameterization, achieving 4x token reduction while preserving fine-grained dynamics, coupled with a semantic-driven video diffusion decoder. We further propose a "Thinking in Modality" that decomposes ambiguous cross-modal tasks into stepwise thinking in an alternative chain of modality, progressively enhancing fidelity and controllability. Extensive experiments demonstrate that Archon achieves superior or comparable performance across diverse digital human generation tasks, validating the effectiveness of our unified framework. Mind2Dialogue: Training Human-Aware Language Models by Simulating User Mental States

As language models become more capable, long-term collaboration in learning, reasoning, and decision-making calls for a deeper understanding of the people they serve. Yet training such human-aware language models faces a fundamental supervision gap because current datasets for LLM assistant training contain few if any well-informed responses explicitly grounded in users' unspoken beliefs and goals. Scaling such supervision is inherently constrained, as users' underlying states are not directly observable. We thus propose the Mind2Dialogue framework to mitigate this gap by simulating users' mental states and turning them into privileged supervision for human-aware training. Specifically, we first propose a psychology-guided simulator that preserves personal characteristics while updating mental states through interaction to generate coherent conversations. The key idea is to enforce a shared evolving mental state that drives user behavior and guides an Oracle assistant's responses. Our privileged distillation then trains models on the Oracle's well-informed responses to assist users without direct access to their mental states at deployment. Moreover, we propose to evaluate human-aware learning by combining personalization and theory of mind, examining how models understand people and act on that understanding. Training on the full Mind2Dialogue corpus improves every reported personalization metric over the corresponding Qwen, Llama, and OLMo instruction-tuned baselines, including gains of 26.6 to 40.9 percentage points in preference-following generation. The gains extend to belief and action reasoning on Qwen and Llama, beyond personalized assistance. Looking forward, Mind2Dialogue makes user simulation a foundation for genuine AI collaborators that understand beliefs and intentions behind people's words and support their long-term goals across education, work, and everyday life.
