The Generator-Eraser Paradox: Community Guidelines for Responsible LLM-Assisted Dialect Resource Creation

Abstract

Dialect resources occupy a unique position at the intersection of scientific description, cultural preservation, and computational infrastructure. Large language models offer powerful capabilities for accelerating dialect resource development through retrieval-grounded drafting, corpus navigation, metadata enrichment, and annotation workflow support. However, the same systems pose substantial risks: they can contribute to dialect erasure by privileging prestige varieties, homogenizing orthography, and enabling synthetic feedback loops that reduce linguistic diversity over time. These risks are particularly acute for language varieties characterized by diglossia, limited written standardization, or marginalized speaker communities. This paper makes three contributions. First, we integrate insights from variationist sociolinguistics and corpus linguistics to formalize the generator-eraser paradox as a theoretical framework for understanding the dual nature of LLM-assisted dialect work. Second, we derive 12 community guidelines that operationalize this framework into implementable design requirements for dialect resource creation and documentation. Third, we provide an in-depth case study of Arabic dialects, including a structured comparison of widely used resources, to demonstrate how these guidelines address language-specific challenges including diglossia, orthographic variability, and community governance. The contribution is conceptual and operational rather than experimental, with the goal of enabling dialect communities and resource builders across languages to adopt LLMs without sacrificing authenticity, variation, or sovereignty.

DiaLLM: An Investigation into the Robustness-Generation Gap in English Dialect Adaptation

Large language models increasingly understand dialectal English, yet still produce only standard, US-leaning English, leaving dialectal generation, the harder half of the problem, largely unaddressed. We introduce DiaLLM, which continually pretrains three open-weight language model families on the International Corpus of English and applies implicit and explicit post-training paradigms, each combined with three model alignment strategies, giving the first controlled comparison of these components across Australian, Indian, and Northern British English. Our results reveal a robustness-generation gap: benchmarks are shaped by continual pretraining and SFT, while alignment visibly reshapes generation in ways benchmarks do not capture. Explicit variety-targeted adaptation produces output reliably recognised as dialectal and judged more dialectal than broad alignment, yet where human judgement was directly assessed, the method that most aggressively optimises the dialectal reward is not the one judged most dialectal. Independent linguistic analysis corroborates this reward-quality gap, most clearly on two of the three families. No single alignment method dominates, and closing the gap will require richer reward designs and continued investment in dialectal resources. Can Dialects Be Steered Like Languages? Sparse Neurons and Distributed Directions in Arabic LLMs

Dialectal data are scarce relative to Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), causing Arabic LLMs to overproduce MSA and struggle with dialectally accurate generation. This raises a fundamental interpretability question about where and how dialectal features are encoded within model internals and whether these representations can improve dialect generation without fine-tuning. We study two inference-time approaches as interpretability probes and control mechanisms. First, neuron-level analysis identifies sparse populations that encode dialect-specific features and tests whether amplifying or suppressing them steers model outputs toward target dialects. Second, vector steering extracts dialect-specific activation directions and injects them during inference, motivated by feature entanglement at the neuron level. We find that these neurons are real but only partially explanatory. They occupy under 1% of MLP dimensions but span only 5% to 21% of the residual dialect direction. This limited coverage is causally consequential. Neuron steering reinforces dialect in some varieties when the prompt is already dialectal but cannot induce it from MSA prompts, whereas vector steering succeeds in both settings. Arabic dialects are therefore steerable mainly through distributed rather than localized representations

\textit{Versteasch du mi?} Computational and Socio-Linguistic Perspectives on GenAI, LLMs, and Non-Standard Language

The design of Large Language Models (LLMs) and generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has been shown to be "unfair" to less-spoken languages (Petrov et al., 2023) and to deepen the digital language divide (Bella et al., 2023). Critical sociolinguistic work has also argued that these technologies are not only made possible by prior sociohistorical processes of linguistic standardisation, often grounded in European nationalist and colonial projects (Migge and Schneider, 2025), but also exacerbate epistemologies of language as "monolithic, monolingual, syntactically standardized systems of meaning" (Schneider, 2024, p. 5). In our paper, we draw on earlier work on the intersections of technology and language policy (Kelly-Holmes, 2019) and bring our respective expertise in critical sociolinguistics and computational linguistics to bear on an interrogation of these arguments. We take two different complexes of non-standard linguistic varieties in our respective repertoires-South Tyrolean dialects, which are widely used in informal communication in South Tyrol, Italy (Alber et al., 2024), as well as varieties of Kurdish-as starting points to an interdisciplinary exploration of the intersections between GenAI and linguistic variation and standardisation. We discuss both how LLMs can be made to deal with non-standard language from a technical perspective, and whether, when or how this can contribute to "democratic and decolonial digital and machine learning strategies" (Migge and Schneider, 2025, p. 12), which has direct policy implications.
