UrduMMLU: A Massive Multitask Benchmark for Urdu Language Understanding

Abstract

Meaningful multilingual evaluation must test models in the target language and educational context. Urdu, spoken by more than 230 million people, lacks a broad MMLU-style benchmark built from native educational sources. We introduce UrduMMLU, a benchmark of 26,389 Urdu MCQs across 26 subjects and five domains, collected from native Urdu MCQ banks and public examination PDFs. Unlike translation-based benchmarks, UrduMMLU combines academic subjects with content specific to Urdu and regional education. We label the exam-derived portion through dual human annotation with strict consensus filtering. We evaluate 30 LLMs under English and Urdu prompts, yielding 60 zero-shot evaluations, and further evaluate four open-source LLMs under multiple few-shot settings across both prompt languages. Gemini-3.5-Flash performs best, reaching 90.23% and 90.45% accuracy, while no other model exceeds 85%. The strongest open-source model trails by 7.78 and 9.12 points, and many models lose 25 to 40 points on Urdu-centered Humanities subjects compared with STEM. Few-shot prompting yields only modest gains. Results on UrduMMLU show that current LLMs have uneven Urdu knowledge, particularly for content grounded in the regional context.

UrduFactCheck: An Agentic Fact-Checking Framework for Urdu with Evidence Boosting and Benchmarking

The rapid adoption of Large Language Models (LLMs) has raised important concerns about the factual reliability of their outputs, particularly in low-resource languages such as Urdu. Existing automated fact-checking systems are predominantly developed for English, leaving a significant gap for the more than 200 million Urdu speakers worldwide. In this work, we present UrduFactBench and UrduFactQA, two novel hand-annotated benchmarks designed to enable fact-checking and factual consistency evaluation in Urdu. While UrduFactBench focuses on claim verification, UrduFactQA targets the factuality of LLMs in question answering. These resources, the first of their kind for Urdu, were developed through a multi-stage annotation process involving native Urdu speakers. To complement these benchmarks, we introduce UrduFactCheck, a modular fact-checking framework that incorporates both monolingual and translation-based evidence retrieval strategies to mitigate the scarcity of high-quality Urdu evidence. Leveraging these resources, we conduct an extensive evaluation of twelve LLMs and demonstrate that translation-augmented pipelines consistently enhance performance compared to monolingual ones. Our findings reveal persistent challenges for open-source LLMs in Urdu and underscore the importance of developing targeted resources. DunbaaBERT: From Sacrifice to Semantics

Large language models have achieved strong performance across many NLP tasks, yet Urdu remains comparatively underexplored due to limited resources and fragmented evaluation settings. To address this gap, we introduce DunbaaBERT, a family of Urdu RoBERTa-base models trained from scratch with Byte-BPE vocabularies of 32k, 52k, and 96k tokens on a deduplicated 17GB Urdu corpus. We evaluate DunbaaBERT across intrinsic and downstream Urdu NLP benchmarks covering linguistic acceptability, news classification, offensive language detection, and sentiment analysis while analyzing vocabulary-size effects on performance and efficiency trade-offs. Across benchmarks, the DunbaaBERT variants achieve competitive performance against strong multilingual baselines while consistently maintaining favorable efficiency trade-offs. Interestingly, larger vocabularies do not consistently improve downstream effectiveness, with DunbaaBERT32k_{\text{32k}} repeatedly providing the strongest overall efficiency profile. Overall, our results demonstrate that carefully curated Urdu-specific encoder models can remain highly competitive despite comparatively compact model and training scales. 'Ghaib in Translation' aka Unseen Harm: Measuring Cross-Script Safety Inconsistency with 'Missed-in-Urdu' Scores in LLM Hate Speech Detection

Urdu, the world's tenth most spoken language with 246 million speakers, remains almost entirely absent from mainstream LLM safety evaluation and nine years of WOAH proceedings. To investigate whether this absence has measurable consequences for content moderation reliability, five large language models, GPT-4o, Claude Sonnet 4.5, Gemini 2.5 Flash, Qwen-2.5, and Llama-3.1, were tested across six datasets spanning Nastaliq Urdu, Roman Urdu, English, and code-switched Urdu-English. Across the five Urdu-script datasets, label instability between original-script and English-translation classification ranged from 15.9% (Gemini 2.5 Flash) to 31.6% (Qwen-2.5), with a 'Missed-in-Urdu' rate, content flagged as harmful in English translation but passed as normal in the original script, ranging from 2.4% to 9.9% (median 4.3%). A complete enumeration of all 205 papers across nine ALW/WOAH editions via the ACL Anthology API confirms zero dedicated Urdu papers across the entire period. Results indicate that current LLMs provide uneven safety assurance across Urdu's script varieties, with smaller open-weight models showing substantially higher instability and missed-harm rates than frontier closed models.
