MiniPIC: Flexible Position-Independent Caching in <100LOC

Abstract

Retrieval-augmented and agentic workloads repeatedly prefill recurring predictable structured inputs (which we call "spans") such as documents and code files. Yet, prefix caching in engines such as vLLM cannot reuse their KV entries unless they share identical prefixes with another request, while Position-Independent Caching (PIC) implementations within production-grade inference servers typically either require substantial server code changes or keep KV state outside the server, incurring host-to-device transfer overhead. We present Minimalistic PIC (MiniPIC): a minimal, flexible and fast vLLM design built from two ingredients: positional-encoding-free KV cache and user-controlled cache-reuse primitives. MiniPIC stores unrotated K vectors in the KV cache, applies RoPE to K tiles inside attention using per-request logical positions, and exposes three user-facing and token-level primitives: block-aligned padding, span separator (SSep), and prompt depend (PDep), that modify hashing behavior and effective block-level causal attention structure. With fewer than 100 lines of core-engine changes plus a custom attention backend, these primitives are sufficient to realize multiple PIC methods, including Block-Attention, EPIC, and Prompt Cache, within the same running vLLM instance, while natively integrating with KV cache CPU offload implementations. On 2WikiMultihopQA, MiniPIC with interleaved scheduling improves prefill throughput by 49% over baseline vLLM, reduces cached-span time-to-first-token by up to two orders of magnitude, preserves the linear prefill scaling of uncached spans, and incurs only 5.7% worst-case overhead.

SemPIC: Learning Semantic Position-Independent KV Caches

Long-context retrieval and agentic workloads repeatedly reuse the same documents under changing instructions, histories, and document orders. Prefix caching cannot exploit this reuse, while position-independent caching (PIC) remains unreliable because independently compiled KV states lack the future context in which they will be consumed. Our diagnostics show that a learned boundary-conditioned baseline sharply reduces attention deviation near reusable-block boundaries but leaves interior and task-level residuals, motivating adaptation of the document representation itself. We present \emph{SemPIC}, which trains a LoRA-enabled Writer to compile native per-layer document KVs through behavioral distillation while retaining the pretrained decoder as an unchanged Reader. Adaptation is confined to offline cache construction, preserving the standard KV interface and cache-hit decoding path. We further introduce KV Gradient Checkpointing, which reduces peak training memory without severing gradients through cached KVs. Across three models and four tasks, SemPIC raises mean micro-F1 over KV Packet from 0.53 to 0.60, approaching Full Recompute at 0.62. Code: https://github.com/jn12-29/SemPIC

Irminsul: MLA-Native Position-Independent Caching for Agentic LLM Serving

Agentic LLM workloads put bit-identical tokens at shifted positions every turn, voiding prefix caches at the first byte of divergence. Operators report cache-hit regressions ranging from moderate slowdowns to severe TTFT spikes of 10-16s on unchanged content. Prior position-independent caching systems correct RoPE on the full dKd_K-dimensional key, an architectural cost imposed by GQA, not by caching itself. Multi-Head Latent Attention, deployed at scale in DeepSeek-V2/V3/R1, Kimi-K2/Moonlight, GLM-5, and Mistral Large 3, factors each KV row into a position-free cKVc_{KV} and a 64-dim krk_r correctable in closed form; this structure motivates content-addressed caching as a natural fit rather than a GQA workaround. We present Irminsul, which extends SGLang's radix cache with content-hash keying over CDC-chunked segments and a δδ-rotation rule for krk_r. We evaluate three native MLA-MoE deployments - DeepSeek-V2-Lite (16B/2.4B), Kimi Moonlight-16B-A3B, and JoyAI-Flash (48B/3B) - with output-consistency on all three and recovery measured on the two endpoints; Irminsul recovers up to ~83% of prompt tokens above exact-prefix on agentic traffic while delivering 63% prefill energy savings per cache hit. We argue that content-addressed caching belongs in the serving stack as a first-class primitive, not a retrofit over prefix matching.

LinearKV: One Cached State Suffices for Position-Independent Caching in Hybrid LLMs

LLM serving is increasingly accelerated by position-independent caching (PIC). Existing PIC methods, however, are built for full-attention models, where a token-indexed KV cache underlies its core operations: matching reusable token chunks, concatenating their KV entries, and selectively recomputing a few tokens to restore cross-chunk context. Hybrid LLMs break these primitives---they replace most attention layers with linear recurrences that expose only a fixed-size state, leaving no token-indexed KV to concatenate or to locally repair. This raises a natural question: can PIC benefit hybrid models, and what would it take? We present LinearKV, a training-free hybrid-PIC framework. Its key insight is a \emph{decoupled initialization}: each linear layer maps its KK matched local states to a single initial state, while full-attention layers concatenate their KV as before. LinearKV is therefore compatible with existing PIC methods, reusing their token selection and recomputation as-is. Under this framework, we find that a \emph{single cached state} suffices as the linear layer's initializer. The algebraically principled alternative---composing all KK cached states into the exact full-prefix state, as concurrent work HYPIC does---is unnecessary and, on some architectures, even harmful. We compare the two across three hybrid models and three PIC selectors. On the two GDN models the two tie, both recovering most of full quality (up to 92%92\%); on the Mamba-2 model, exact composition instead collapses under every selector---under EPIC, for instance, it recovers only 46.6%46.6\% of full quality, versus 86.8%86.8\% for a single cached block initializer. A single state initializer is also cheaper, cutting time-to-first-token to 0.46×0.46\times full prefill versus a further 55--17%17\% overhead for exact composition; results hold across LongBench QA and RULER at 8K--32K.
