Double-Helix Vision (DH-V2): A Geometry-Based Visual Sampler for Bandwidth-Constrained Perception

Authors: Jinwen Wen

Abstract

We present Double-Helix Vision (DH), a geometry-based visual sampler that compresses 2D images into compact 1D signals using paired golden-ratio-inspired spiral trajectories. Rather than processing every pixel uniformly, DH employs two phase-shifted helices (Alpha and Beta, offset by 180 degrees) to sample the image with biologically-inspired foveation: high density at the center, sparse coverage at the periphery. At 4K resolution, DH achieves a 1,433x compression ratio (99.93% reduction) while preserving the geometric structure of the scene. The full perception pipeline -- including spatial mapping, temporal collision detection, and intra-frame structural disparity estimation -- runs in 0.52 ms at 1080p on CPU-only hardware, with no neural network dependencies. On CIFAR-10 at extreme sampling budgets (K=128 points per helix), DH achieves a +6.03% accuracy gain over uniform random sampling. A JSON-serializable Robotics API is provided, delivering sub-millisecond spatial perception reports in 2.7 KB packets. Code and benchmarks are available under the MIT License.

RegimeVGGT: Layer-Wise Spatially Preserving Redundancy Removal for Visual Geometry Grounded Transformer

Visual Geometry Grounded Transformer (VGGT) recovers dense 3D scene structure from multi-view images in one forward pass, but quadratic cross-frame attention limits its scalability. Existing training-free accelerators reduce computation uniformly along one axis, missing layer heterogeneity. Our spectral, probing, and causal analyses reveal three regimes: shallow layers lack cross-view structure, middle layers drive cross-view alignment, and deep layers are redundant for dense geometry yet their cross-frame attention remains essential for pose. RegimeVGGT applies layer-wise U-shaped compression along two axes: Saliency-Guided Banded Merging protects geometry- and edge-salient tokens, while Selectively Protected K/V Downsampling preserves cross-frame spatial coverage and the pose-critical path through a phase-shifted spatial grid, a reference-frame anchor, and uncompressed camera/register tokens. Training-free, RegimeVGGT achieves a 6.7x speedup over VGGT* at matched reconstruction quality.

Dual-Constrained Diffusion Image Compression for Operational Rate-Distortion-Perception Optimization

The rate-distortion-perception (RDP) trade-off extends classical rate--distortion theory by imposing a distributional constraint on reconstructions, providing a unified framework for neural image compression that jointly governs fidelity and perceptual realism. While prior work achieves near-optimal rate--perception trade-offs, practical frameworks explicitly realizing the full RDP surface remain scarce, primarily due to the difficulty of introducing common randomness at the decoder. We propose DCIC (Dual-Constrained Diffusion Image Compression), which integrates a learned codec with a diffusion-based decoder governed by joint distortion and idempotence constraints. The distortion constraint bounds reconstruction fidelity relative to the base codec output; the idempotence constraint -- requiring that re-encoding the restored image recovers the base codec reconstruction -- serves as a tractable surrogate for the distributional perception requirement. Together, they steer the reverse denoising process via iterative optimization with consistent noise injection, realizing common randomness without additional rate overhead. At fixed rate, dual attenuation factors (KD,KP)(K_D, K_P) jointly navigate the Pareto frontier of the distortion-perception plane, enabling continuously adjustable fidelity-realism trade-offs from a single bitstream. DCICRD_{RD} (KP=0K_P{=}0) and DCICRP_{RP} (KD=0K_D{=}0) arise as boundary curves, with DCICRDP_{RDP} (KD=KP=1K_D = K_P=1) realizing the optimal interior operating point. Experiments on CelebA-HQ, CLIC2020, and ImageNet-1K across CNN, Transformer, and hybrid architectures confirm that DCICRDP_{RDP} achieves superior BD-PSNR over all perceptual codecs, while DCICRP_{RP} matches dedicated perception-oriented methods in BD-FID, validating the practical value of full RDP surface navigation.

CVSearch: Empowering Multimodal LLMs with Cognitive Visual Search for High-Resolution Image Perception

High-resolution (HR) image perception presents a key bottleneck for multimodal large language models (MLLMs). While visual search offers a promising solution, existing methods struggle with the trade-off between coverage and efficiency. Visual expert-assisted search is efficient but prone to blind spots when proposals fail, whereas scan-based search guarantees coverage at the cost of computational redundancy and semantic fragmentation. To address this dilemma, we introduce CVSearch, a training-free adaptive framework that dynamically schedules search strategies via an Assess-then-Search workflow. Specifically, CVSearch first invokes expert-assisted search when global information is insufficient, and only triggers a novel semantic-aware scanning mechanism upon failure. Distinct from rigid grid partitioning, this efficient scanning paradigm incorporates Semantic Guided Adaptive Patching to decompose images into semantically consistent regions, effectively mitigating object fragmentation. Furthermore, we devise a Dynamic Bottom-Up Search strategy driven by a Visual Complexity prior to enable efficient and precise iterative exploration of local details. Extensive experiments on HR benchmarks demonstrate that CVSearch achieves state-of-the-art accuracy while substantially improving search efficiency.
