TMASC: Transmasculine Attitude and Speech Corpus

Abstract

We introduce the Transmasculine Attitudes and Speech Corpus (TMASC), a multimodal corpus of 196 transmasculine individuals, including questionnaire responses and 66 audio recordings. The questionnaire includes items exploring the vocal health of transmasculine individuals. The audio recordings include cough and throat-clearing samples, a reading passage, and additional session-specific questions. This paper outlines the development of this corpus and the data collection procedures. To illustrate the utility of this corpus, we present three case studies demonstrating how this crowd-sourced multimodal corpus can be used to support transmasculine individuals. These include the integration of perceptual and acoustic data, the identification of group-level characteristics, and the calibration of acoustic measurements.

Your Multimodal Speech Model Says I Have a Face for Radio

As large neural models have become better at language tasks, researchers are increasingly building multi- and omnimodal models that handle more modalities of data. One example is the expansion of speech recognition models to audio-visual data for noise mitigation and multimodal subtitling. While performance and bias have been studied extensively in the single-modality regime, it is unknown how new modalities affect this, even though they produce biases in humans. We therefore propose the first bias evaluation of multimodal speech recognition, where we create videos pairing different faces with the same audio, and measure changes in speech transcription accuracy. We find large quality-of-service differences across mWhisper-Flamingo and Gemini models, with drops of up to 4.05 word error rate points, across self-declared gender, ethnicity, and their intersection. Our findings point to a priority for developers to evaluate, fix, and communicate such limitations, as providing more signals through additional modalities is not necessarily better, and may even lead to biased outcomes.

OpenEnded: An Open-Response Speech Corpus for Speaking Proficiency Assessment with Human Annotations and ALM Supervision

The development of automated speaking assessment (ASA) is limited by the scarcity of public datasets, with most existing work relying on read-aloud speech, which limits applicability to real-world communication scenarios. In this work, we introduce OpenEnded, a corpus of English practice speech from Mandarin speakers in open-response tasks. Unlike prior open-response datasets that provide only holistic proficiency scores, OpenEnded offers utterance-level assessments of accuracy, fluency, and prosody. Approximately 10,000 utterances are collected and annotated using a hybrid framework: 1,000 are manually labeled via multi-rater scoring with discrepancy resolution to form a high-quality test set, while the remaining are pseudo-labeled by an audio language model (ALM) for training and development sets. We evaluate ALMs and existing ASA models on the OpenEnded test set and introduce VoxPA as an additional baseline. Results show that ALM-generated pseudo-labels improve training over original ALM scoring, while VoxPA achieves the best performance among all baselines.

WorldSpeech: A Multilingual Speech Corpus from Around the World

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) performs well for high-resource languages with abundant paired audio-transcript data, but its accuracy degrades sharply for most languages due to limited publicly available aligned data. To this end, we introduce WorldSpeech, a 24 kHz multilingual speech corpus comprising 65k hours of aligned audio-transcript data across 76 languages, collected from diverse public sources including parliamentary proceedings, international broadcasts, and public-domain audiobooks. For 37 languages, WorldSpeech provides more than 200 hours of aligned speech, with 28 exceeding 500 hours and 24 surpassing 1k hours. Fine-tuning existing ASR models on WorldSpeech results in an average relative Word-Error-Rate reduction of 63.5% across 11 typologically diverse languages.
