G-IdiomAlign: A Gloss-Pivoted Benchmark for Cross-Lingual Idiom Alignment

Abstract

Idioms are difficult to transfer across languages due to their non-compositionality and weak surface-form grounding, making literal mappings unreliable. We present G-IdiomAlign, a gloss-pivoted benchmark where each idiom is anchored by an English gloss from Wiktionary. We further construct a high-confidence reference alignment set for reproducible evaluation. G-IdiomAlign supports two protocols: (1) a controlled Multiple-Choice Idiom Equivalence with typed distractors for error attribution; and (2) a Gloss-Contrastive Generation contrasting No-gloss and With-gloss inputs to isolate the effect of an explicit semantic pivot. Across diverse LLMs, a bias to literal translation is a dominant failure mode, especially when the target is a low-resource language. Glosses consistently improve Gloss-Contrastive Generation under an embedding-based semantic proxy, but performance remains modest, indicating substantial headroom in the open output space. Subsequent analysis on Qwen3-8B further suggests that cross-condition differences are concentrated more in attention heads than in layers, while better With-gloss generations coincide with stronger gloss anchoring.

IdiomX A Multilingual Benchmark for Idiom Understanding, Retrieval, and Interpretation

Idiomatic expressions remain a persistent challenge for natural language processing because their meanings are often non-compositional, context-dependent, and difficult to align across languages. Existing idiom resources are often limited in scale, contextual diversity, or multilingual coverage, restricting their utility for modern language models. We introduce IdiomX, a large-scale multilingual benchmark for idiom understanding, retrieval, and interpretation, constructed through a reproducible multi-stage pipeline combining lexical resource extraction, large-scale normalization, controlled large language model enrichment, and structured validation. The resulting dataset contains over 190K contextualized examples spanning 12K+ idioms, with aligned English, Arabic, and French semantic representations, idiomatic and literal usage labels, and rich linguistic metadata. Building on this resource, we define a unified four-task benchmark covering idiom detection, context-to-idiom retrieval, Arabic-to-English idiom retrieval, and idiom interpretation, extending evaluation from figurative recognition to semantic grounding and explainable meaning retrieval. Experiments show that contextual transformer models substantially improve idiom detection, while hybrid retrieval and reranking architectures significantly strengthen both monolingual and cross-lingual idiom retrieval. Results further demonstrate that idiom interpretation can be effectively modeled as a semantic retrieval task, introducing interpretability as a complementary benchmark dimension. Overall, IdiomX provides a scalable benchmark for studying idiomatic language as a progression from detection to retrieval and semantic interpretation, and offers a modular framework extensible to additional languages and figurative reasoning tasks

Multilingual Idioms in Sentences and Conversations Across High-, Medium-, and Low-Resource Languages

Idiomatic expressions pose a major challenge for multilingual NLP because their meanings shift between figurative and literal usage, often requiring context for accurate interpretation. Prior work has focused on high-resource languages typically evaluates isolated idiom-meaning questions, overlooking realistic discourse. We introduce MIDI, a multilingual idiom dataset spanning 3 high-, 3 medium-, and 12 low-resource languages, curated by native speakers. Unlike previous datasets, MIDI provides idioms embedded in both sentence-level and conversational contexts, capturing both literal and figurative readings. Benchmarking state-of-the-art models shows that idiom comprehension degrades in low-resource languages and that, in all resource tiers, literal interpretations are substantially harder than figurative ones. Conversational context improves performance but does not eliminate these disparities. Through controlled tests and interventions on hidden representations, we further separate memorization from reasoning, exposing core limitations of current models.

Evaluating Large Language Models on Urdu Idioms

Idioms remain a persistent challenge in natural language processing due to their figurative and culturally grounded meanings, which distinguish them from literal expressions. Although recent advances in large language models (LLMs) have improved idiom handling across several languages, limited attention has been given to low resource languages such as Urdu. In this work, we present a comprehensive benchmark for Urdu to English idiomatic translation, consisting of a manually verified dataset of 4,000 aligned idiom sentence pairs in both Perso Arabic (native Urdu script) and Romanized Urdu. We evaluate multiple tasks, including translation, paraphrasing, idiom span detection, and back-translation, using diverse prompting strategies such as cultural prompting, idiomatic prompting, and few-shot learning. Our findings show that frontier LLMs consistently outperform traditional neural machine translation systems across all evaluation settings, particularly in preserving figurative and metaphorical meaning. While models demonstrate relatively stable performance on native Urdu script, the absence of standardized orthography in Romanized Urdu introduces substantial challenges for consistency and idiom span detection. This work establishes a high quality benchmark for cross script idiomatic evaluation in Urdu and underscores the importance of prompt engineering in preserving figurative language meaning across languages.
