Abstract

Generative models have significantly advanced image generation, resulting in synthesized images that are increasingly indistinguishable from authentic ones. However, the creation of fake images with malicious intent is a growing concern. Low-configured smart devices have become highly popular, making it easier for deceptive images to reach users. Consequently, the demand for effective detection methods is increasingly urgent. In this paper, we introduce a simple yet efficient method that captures pixel fluctuations between neighboring pixels by calculating the gradient, which highlights variations in grayscale intensity. This approach functions as a high-pass filter, emphasizing key features for accurate image distinction while minimizing color influence. Our experiments on multiple datasets demonstrate that our method achieves accuracy levels comparable to state-of-the-art techniques while requiring minimal computational resources. Therefore, it is suitable for deployment on low-end devices such as smartphones. The code is available at https://github.com/vohoaidanh/adof.

Effective Synthetic Image Detection via Noise Residual Clustering

The rapid advancement of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has made synthetic images remarkably realistic, posing security threats such as misinformation and fraud. It is significant to detect the synthetic image in the manner of passive and blind image authentication. Most existing detectors rely on supervised training with large labeled datasets, leading to high costs and degraded performance on unknown generative models. To attenuate such deficiencies, we propose a training-free detection method. Specifically, noise residual fingerprints are first extracted by a simple yet effective pre-trained Noiseprint++ model. Then multi-scale features are further extracted from such residual by a frozen Vision Transformer (ViT), followed by adaptive weighted fusion. Only a few real image samples are used needed to initialize the clustering centers for unsupervised K-Means, distinguishing real and synthetic images without training. Extensive evaluations on four benchmark datasets show that our proposed scheme achieves an average accuracy of 82.2%, outperforming the state-of-the-art detectors on generalization ability. Superior performance is gained on the popular diffusion type of synthetic images, and the effectiveness of each module is validated by ablation studies. HiMix: Hierarchical Artifact-aware Mixup for Generalized Synthetic Image Detection

The rapid evolution of generative models has enabled the creation of highly realistic and diverse synthetic images, posing significant challenges to reliable and generalizable Synthetic Image Detection (SID). However, existing detectors are typically trained on limited and biased datasets, resulting in poor generalization to unseen generators. To address this issue, we propose HiMix, a unified framework that enhances generalization by expanding the training distribution and promoting artifact-aware representations. Specifically, the Mixup-driven Distributional Augmentation (MDA) module constructs continuous transitional samples between real and fake images, improving coverage of low-confidence regions and exposing the model to more challenging samples, while the pixel-wise mixup operation smoothly perturbs semantics to enhance sensitivity to low-level artifacts. Moreover, the Hierarchical Artifact-aware Representation (HAR) module aggregates artifact information from both global and local levels through cross-layer integration and coarse-to-fine feature fusion, enabling the extraction of discriminative forgery representations under diverse distributions. Extensive experiments across multiple benchmarks demonstrate that HiMix achieves state-of-the-art performance, establishing well-separated logits for improved generalization to unseen forgeries.

DailyBench: A Unified Benchmark for AI-Generated and Manipulated Images from Modern Generative Models

Recent advances in generative models have shifted AI-generated image detection from identifying easily distinguishable, fully synthetic images to identifying highly realistic content generated by both modern generation and manipulation pipelines. However, existing detection benchmarks are often built with outdated generative models and primarily emphasize full-image synthesis, creating a growing mismatch between benchmark data and the images encountered in real-world generation and editing scenarios. To bridge this gap, we introduce DailyBench, a high-quality unified benchmark for evaluating whether AI-generated image detectors can generalize across both modern full-image synthesis and object-level manipulation. DailyBench contains two complementary subsets: FakeBench, which includes high-quality images synthesized by recent open-source and commercial generative models, and ManipulationBench, which introduces challenging object-level edits applied to real images using advanced image-conditional models. This design makes DailyBench a realistic testbed for studying both generator-level generalization and manipulation-aware detection under subtle local edits. Experiments on DailyBench reveal substantial robustness gaps in current detectors: methods reporting 91-96% balanced accuracy on GenImage drop to 60-76% on FakeBench and 54-66% on ManipulationBench. These results show that existing detectors remain poorly generalized to realistic synthesis and manipulation, highlighting DailyBench as a rigorous testbed for developing robust and manipulation-aware AI-generated image detection methods.
