Abstract

The widespread adoption of facial masks, accelerated by COVID-19 and mandated in security-sensitive settings, has exposed limitations of conventional face recognition systems. Existing approaches relying on fixed cosine thresholds, non-adaptive CNNs, and purely data-driven features fail to generalize when facial regions are occluded, creating a gap between lab performance and real-world deployability. This paper proposes PLGSA-Transformer, a cross-modal face matching framework with three contributions. First, Periocular Landmark-Guided Spatial Attention (PLGSA) uses MediaPipe landmarks to compute Gaussian heatmaps over the eye, brow, and forehead regions, fusing them with EfficientNetB3 features via a learnable residual gate to direct attention toward discriminative visible regions. Second, a Hybrid CNN-Transformer Branch reshapes feature maps into tokens processed by a two-layer Multi-Head Self-Attention encoder, enabling cross-regional dependency modelling. Third, the Occlusion-Adaptive Cosine Threshold (OACT) is a jointly trained head that raises the matching threshold in proportion to predicted occlusion severity. The model is evaluated on 858 images from Zenodo MDMFR (60%), Kaggle CelebA-HQ masked collection (25%), and author-collected images (15%), spanning both genders, ages 21-75, with varied mask types, trained via a unified loss combining contrastive verification, identity classification, and occlusion cross-entropy. PLGSA-Transformer achieves 97.22% pair verification accuracy with ROC AUC 1.0000, surpassing VGG-16-based MUFM (Abdullah et al., 2025; 95.0%), HOG classifiers (Adnan et al., 2020; 85.0%), and Feature-based Structural Measure (Shnain et al., 2017; 86.61%). These results confirm that encoding periocular geometry into attention, with Transformer modelling and occlusion-adaptive thresholds, yields a robust, scalable solution for cross-modal masked face recognition.

MGFace: Mask-Gated Face Matching via Conditional Similarity Routing

Face identification has achieved remarkable performance under normal conditions. Yet, its accuracy often degrades significantly when query faces are partially occluded, especially by facial masks. Existing re-ranking approaches improve robustness by exploiting patch-level similarities. Still, they often rely on costly, fine-grained matching mechanisms, which limit their efficiency in large-scale retrieval scenarios. In this paper, we propose MGFace, a mask-gated face identification pipeline that predicts the mask status of a query face and conditionally routes the similarity computation accordingly. Specifically, MGFace distinguishes between masked and unmasked queries, applies global embedding matching to unmasked queries, and activates mask-aware patch-level re-ranking only for masked queries. This design focuses on reliable upper-face regions while avoiding unnecessary fine-grained computation. Experiments on the extended LFW-Mask dataset show that MGFace achieves over 80% identification accuracy with the FaceNet backbone and over 90% with the ArcFace backbone. Compared with a previous EMD-based re-ranking method, MGFace achieves better identification performance while reducing query time by approximately 20x. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of MGFace in improving masked-face identification accuracy with low computational overhead. Attention-Aware Transformer-Based Aggregation Network for Video Periocular Recognition

Video periocular recognition is the task of recognizing an individual's identity based on the region around an individual's eyes. The periocular area is one of the most discriminative regions of the human face, making it suitable for recognition tasks. Its use as a biometric modality has emerged as an alternative, especially in surveillance scenarios where conventional biometric traits such as face or iris recognition become unfeasible due to unconstrained acquisition conditions. This paper proposes an attention-aware approach for video-based periocular recognition in surveillance environments. The framework consists of two main modules: feature embedding and aggregation. The feature embedding module is a deep convolutional neural network that maps periocular data to feature vectors. The aggregation module is an encoder-only transformer that adaptively learns to aggregate frame-level features into a single video representation and a feature vector for the still reference image. Experiments on the publicly available COX Face dataset show the robustness of the proposed method, consistently outperforming naive aggregation schemes. In the best scenario, the approach achieves 99.8%99.8\% of TPR@1e11e^{-1} and 96.6%96.6\% of Rank-5.

Generalized Disguise Makeup Presentation Attack Detection Using an Attention-Guided Patch-Based Framework

Despite significant advances in facial recognition systems, they remain vulnerable to face presentation attacks. Among them, disguise makeup attacks are particularly challenging, as they use advanced cosmetics, prosthetic components, and artificial materials to realistically alter facial appearance, often making detection difficult even for humans. Despite their importance, this problem remains underexplored, and publicly available datasets are limited. To address this, we propose a generalized disguise makeup presentation attack detection framework. The method adopts a two-phase design in which a style-invariant full-face model, trained with metric learning and enhanced by a whitening transformation, extracts region attention scores via Grad-CAM. These scores guide a patch-based phase that performs localized analysis using region-specific subnetworks trained with metric learning for fine-grained discrimination. We also construct a new, diverse dataset of live and disguise makeup faces collected under real-world conditions, covering variations in subjects, environments, and disguise materials. Experimental results demonstrate strong generalization across both the collected dataset and SIW-Mv2, achieving 8.97% ACER and 9.76% EER on the collected dataset, and 0% ACER on Obfuscation and Impersonation and 1.34% on Cosmetics attacks of SIW-Mv2. The proposed method consistently outperforms prior works while maintaining robust performance across other spoof types.
