Best-of-N TTS Evaluation is Confounded by ASR Family Alignment

Abstract

Best-of-NN (BoN) inference improves content consistency in zero-shot text-to-speech by selecting from NN candidates with an automatic speech recognition (ASR) verifier. We identify an underexplored evaluation confound: a verifier's apparent quality depends strongly on which ASR family judges it. On LibriSpeech-PC test-clean~\citep{librispeechpc} with F5-TTS~\citep{f5tts}, verifier rankings reverse across Whisper, wav2vec~2.0, and HuBERT evaluators, and same-family verifier-evaluator pairs recover 2-3×\times more oracle headroom than cross-family pairs despite near-identical representations (linear CKA 0.9780.978) -- a pattern consistent with identity- or lineage-level coupling rather than representational overlap. We propose two \textbf{cross-family rank ensembles} (rank-averaging and conjunctive max-rank) that attain the lowest mean WER across three independent evaluators -- 1.61%1.61\% at N=10N{=}10 (12%-12\% relative to F5-TTS) -- with no measurable degradation under automatic SIM-o/UTMOS metrics; the best single verifier drives WER from 2.06%2.06\% to 1.72%1.72\% (16.5%-16.5\%) under the official F5-TTS evaluator. We recommend cross-evaluator triangulation as default reporting practice.

Beyond Naturalness: Probing Automated Text-To-Speech Evaluators on Linguistically Grounded Dimensions

Automated Text-to-Speech (TTS) evaluation methods (Mean Opinion Score (MOS) predictors and Audio Large Language Models (Audio-LLM) judges) are expected to reflect human perception, yet it is unclear how well they capture the distinct aspects of speech that listeners actually perceive. We deconstruct "naturalness" into a linguistically grounded annotation schema spanning 10 distinct perceptual dimensions, and use it to construct the first dimension-level meta-evaluation benchmark for TTS, comprising 860 utterances annotated by trained linguist raters. Results from benchmarking four MOS predictors and four Audio-LLM judges reveal that MOS predictors collapse onto acoustic signal quality, while Audio-LLM judges show selective, prompt-dependent detection that does not generalise across all dimensions. Neither class reliably captures a breadth of linguistically structured speech errors. Our dataset, annotation schema, and evaluation code are publicly released to support more targeted and interpretable TTS evaluation.

PashtoTTS-Bench: automated screening for low-resource non-Latin-script text-to-speech

Text-to-speech (TTS) evaluation for low-resource non-Latin-script languages can fail when it relies on a single ASR round-trip word error rate (WER). A system may produce no audio, speak a neighbouring language, preserve target script text only in an ASR transcript, or sound unnatural to native listeners. We introduce INSV (Intelligibility, Naturalness, Script fidelity, and Verification), a reporting framework that separates these cases. This paper reports INSV-A, the automated screening subset: synthesis completion, ASR WER/CER, transcript Script Fidelity Rate, and audio language identification. Native MOS and phonetic annotation are specified but not claimed in this release. We instantiate INSV-A as PashtoTTS-Bench, a dated benchmark for Pashto TTS. The April-May 2026 run evaluates Edge GulNawaz, Edge Latifa, OmniVoice clone, OmniVoice auto, and an Urdu negative control on 200 FLEURS and 200 filtered Common Voice 24 prompts. Under the independent omniASR_CTC_300M_v2, OmniVoice auto has the lowest WER (24.1% FLEURS, 27.4% CV24), followed by Edge GulNawaz (32.8%, 39.5%), Edge Latifa (35.6%, 47.7%), and OmniVoice clone (45.4%, 34.8%). WER below the natural-speech baseline reflects clean synthetic audio and should not be read as better than native speech. Whisper Large V3 returns 0.0% Pashto labels on checked Pashto TTS audio, while MMS-LID-4017 and SpeechBrain VoxLingua107 separate Pashto outputs from the Urdu control. The release provides provider metadata, per-sentence scores, LID audits, failure logs, and scripts for adding systems.

Preferences of a Voice-First Nation: Large-Scale Pairwise Evaluation and Preference Analysis for TTS in Indian Languages

Crowdsourced pairwise evaluation has emerged as a scalable approach for assessing foundation models. However, applying it to Text to Speech(TTS) introduces high variance due to linguistic diversity and multidimensional nature of speech perception. We present a controlled multidimensional pairwise evaluation framework for multilingual TTS that combines linguistic control with perceptually grounded annotation. Using 5K+ native and code-mixed sentences across 10 Indic languages, we evaluate 7 state-of-the-art TTS systems and collect over 120K pairwise comparisons from over 1900 native raters. In addition to overall preference, raters provide judgments across 6 perceptual dimensions: intelligibility, expressiveness, voice quality, liveliness, noise, and hallucinations. Using Bradley-Terry modeling, we construct a multilingual leaderboard, interpret human preference using SHAP analysis and analyze leaderboard reliability alongside model strengths and trade-offs across perceptual dimensions.
