Letting the Data Speak: Extracting Keywords from Crowdsourced Collections with AI

Abstract

Identifying and assigning keywords at scale is a technical, practical, and ethical challenge for crowdsourced collections. This article reports the findings of the "Extracting Keywords from Crowdsourced Collections" project, which used the Their Finest Hour Online Archive, a crowdsourced Second World War digital collection hosted by the University of Oxford, as a case study. The project evaluated three Natural Language Processing approaches to automate keyword extraction: Named Entity Recognition, Keyword Extraction, and Topic Modelling. It tested these approaches across a range of artificial intelligence techniques, from traditional statistical methods to modern GenAI neural networks. Our quantitative and qualitative findings indicate that Natural Language Processing approaches offer real potential for keyword extraction at scale in crowdsourced collections, but that no single method offers a complete solution and that model choice significantly shapes results. We argue that in crowdsourced collections, where metadata is the direct product of engagement with living contributors, automated keyword extraction raises distinct stewardship responsibilities that must be addressed alongside technical performance. Open-weight, extractive models emerge from our evaluation as best placed to support responsible deployment, while generative AI, despite its abstractive potential, introduces accountability risks that anyone managing crowdsourced collections should weigh carefully.

Can Crowdsourcing Survive the LLM Era? A Community Survey on Human Data Collection

The widespread use of Large Language Models (LLMs) as writing tools challenges the validity of crowdsourced data, as crowdworkers may outsource tasks to models. To better understand how this is addressed, we surveyed 155 researchers in NLP and related disciplines about their experiences and opinions on collecting free-text responses via crowdsourcing. This paper provides an overview of practitioners' challenges, mitigation strategies, and the foreseen implications on data quality. 44% of respondents reported observing LLM usage in their crowdsourced data. While 93% of them had anticipated this, half were unsure what precautions to take. The most prevalent detection strategies are distinctive textual style patterns and unusually fast completion times. Overall, survey responses show that the research community is aware of the problem and taking measures, but existing efforts remain insufficient to fully address it. Finally, we derive a set of considerations to guide future crowdsourced free-text data collection in the era of LLMs.

Enhancing Unsupervised Keyword Extraction in Academic Papers through Integrating Highlights with Abstract

Automatic keyword extraction from academic papers is a key area of interest in natural language processing and information retrieval. Although previous research has mainly focused on utilizing abstract and references for keyword extraction, this paper focuses on the highlights section - a summary describing the key findings and contributions, offering readers a quick overview of the research. Our observations indicate that highlights contain valuable keyword information that can effectively complement the abstract. To investigate the impact of incorporating highlights into unsupervised keyword extraction, we evaluate three input scenarios: using only the abstract, the highlights, and a combination of both. Experiments conducted with four unsupervised models on Computer Science (CS), Library and Information Science (LIS) datasets reveal that integrating the abstract with highlights significantly improves extraction performance. Furthermore, we examine the differences in keyword coverage and content between abstract and highlights, exploring how these variations influence extraction outcomes. Characterising AI Models for Cataloguing

The creation of digital collections involves not only the digitisation of content, but also the creation of catalogue records for it. This often-overlooked task requires slow and costly expert manual work. In this project, we have evaluated the application of AI models to this task, comparing different implementations and models. This work includes a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the experiments carried out, as well as recommendations on the use of AI models that go beyond the specific use case.
