Abstract

Melody skeleton extraction aims to derive a shorter melody that preserves structural notes while removing ornaments. Prior methods rely on hand-crafted reduction rules or note-wise salience classifiers trained with heuristically or procedurally generated pseudo-labels. Such supervision can inherit generator bias and does not explicitly optimize a coherent reduced melody. We introduce MeloBottleneck, a self-supervised framework that represents a skeleton as a length-controlled, order-preserving latent subsequence. A hard-bottleneck extractor selects note events, a rhythmic-closure operator produces a self-consistent skeleton, and a re-ornamentation decoder reconstructs the input melody. Training combines reconstruction, a frozen autoregressive melody prior, ornament-invariant consistency across procedurally ornamented views, and ornament exclusion. We evaluate three regimes: synthetic out-of-distribution ornament-to-skeleton, TAVERN variation-to-theme, and Jiugong ornamented-to-gongche. A matched pseudo-label classifier excels on the synthetic benchmark, while MeloBottleneck transfers better, achieving competitive selection quality on TAVERN and Jiugong. Skeletonized melodies also improve BM25-based fragment retrieval, boosting Recall@K and MRR while reducing query time. Overall, the results suggest that learning skeletons as latent subsequences yields more robust transfer than pseudo-label imitation.

Aligning Language Models for Lyric-to-Melody Generation with Rule-Based Musical Constraints

Large Language Models (LLMs) show promise in lyric-to-melody generation, but models trained with Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) often produce musically implausible melodies with issues like poor rhythm and unsuitable vocal ranges, a phenomenon we term "constraint violation". To address this, we propose a novel alignment framework that instills musical knowledge without human annotation. We define rule-based musical constraints to automatically generate a preference dataset from an SFT model's outputs. The model is then aligned through a sequential process, first using Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) on paired preference data, followed by Kahneman-Tversky Optimization (KTO) on unpaired negative samples. Experimental results demonstrate that our aligned model substantially reduces rule violations and outperforms strong baselines in both objective and subjective evaluations, generating melodies with substantially improved musicality and coherence. Frequency-Aware Self-Supervised Music Representation Learning

Self-supervised learning (SSL) has emerged as an essential paradigm for music information retrieval (MIR). While current SSL models achieve state-of-the-art performance across various MIR tasks, they typically treat audio as 1D sequences, either operating on time-domain waveforms or on flattened time-frequency-domain spectrograms. This discards the rich spatial and structural information in time-frequency representations and overlooks a fundamental intuition in music production. In particular, music is naturally represented as time-frequency grids in MIDI-based workflows, a structure that tightly corresponds to 2D spectrograms and inherently makes many MIR tasks trivial. Motivated by this intuition, we propose PupuM2D, a musical Masked Modeling Duo (M2D) model that is trained directly on 2D music spectrograms. Instead of applying masked language modeling (MLM) to 1D sequences, PupuM2D learns robust representations by predicting the latent embeddings of masked 2D music spectrogram patches from unmasked contexts. To optimally adapt such a framework to music signals, we also apply domain-specific modifications to model architecture, training scheme, and inference paradigm, with comprehensive ablation studies showing their effectiveness. Evaluations on the MARBLEv2 benchmark show that PupuM2D outperforms the sequence-based SSL models across multiple MIR tasks in linear probing. Additionally, case studies of the attention maps also confirm that PupuM2D captures musically meaningful patterns within the 2D time-frequency domain. YingMusic-Singer: Controllable Singing Voice Synthesis with Flexible Lyric Manipulation and Annotation-free Melody Guidance

Regenerating singing voices with altered lyrics while preserving melody consistency remains challenging, as existing methods either offer limited controllability or require laborious manual alignment. We propose YingMusic-Singer, a fully diffusion-based model enabling melody-controllable singing voice synthesis with flexible lyric manipulation. The model takes three inputs: an optional timbre reference, a melody-providing singing clip, and modified lyrics, without manual alignment. Trained with curriculum learning and Group Relative Policy Optimization, YingMusic-Singer achieves stronger melody preservation and lyric adherence than Vevo2, the most comparable baseline supporting melody control without manual alignment. We also introduce LyricEditBench, the first benchmark for melody-preserving lyric modification evaluation. The code, weights, benchmark, and demos are publicly available at https://github.com/ASLP-lab/YingMusic-Singer-Plus.
