Abstract

Expressive speech synthesis for voice assistants requires flexible style control that adapts to explicit requests and broader interaction context. We propose Harness TTS, a lightweight control layer that wraps around a TTS engine to externalize and govern its expressive behavior. It reformulates style control as closed-set prompt-tool routing: offline, a compact registry of stylistic prompt tools is constructed with structured metadata; online, an LLM planner selects the appropriate tool based on a priority-aware observation schema, and the TTS executor synthesizes speech using the corresponding prompt audio. We evaluate Harness TTS on both routing and synthesis tasks. In routing, Qwen3-4B achieves Top-1 accuracies of 74.3%, 43.0%, and 64.6% on explicit, implicit, and conflict subsets. For synthesis, experiments on CosyVoice3 and VoxCPM2 show that Harness TTS outperforms instruction-only control, achieving higher instruction-following win rates (margins of 23.1-35.6 points on CosyVoice3 and 13.8-20.0 points on VoxCPM2) and improving UTMOSv2 scores by 0.11-0.38. Moreover, the 4B planner delivers its first tool recommendation in under 50 ms in standard mode, introducing negligible latency for real-time interaction. These results demonstrate that equipping TTS engines with a dedicated Harness layer offers a practical, auditable, and context-aware solution for voice assistant expression control.

CtrlSpeech: Coarse-to-Fine Control for Expressive Speech Synthesis

Recent Text-To-Speech (TTS) systems have achieved strong naturalness and zero-shot voice cloning performance, but fine-grained control of expressive speech at the word or phoneme level remains challenging. We propose CtrlSpeech, a controllable, expressive TTS framework with coarse-to-fine control. Built on the DiTAR architecture, CtrlSpeech combines global speaker conditioning with phone-aligned pitch, loudness, and duration signals, enabling localized prosodic control while preserving the target speaker's timbre. This design allows users to adjust expressive attributes at a fine temporal granularity, making speech refinement more flexible and controllable. Experimental results show that CtrlSpeech achieves competitive zero-shot TTS performance and improves controllability over expressive attributes, demonstrating its effectiveness for flexible and practical expressive speech synthesis.

ISCSLP 2026 CoT-TTS Challenge: Chain-of-Thought Reasoning for Context-Aware Text-to-Speech

Recent advances in text-to-speech (TTS) have greatly improved speech naturalness, speaker similarity, and controllability. However, most existing controllable TTS systems still rely on explicit user-provided style prompts, making it difficult to automatically determine how a sentence should be spoken in long and complex conversational scenarios. This proposal introduces the ISCSLP 2026 CoT-TTS Challenge, which aims to evaluate whether a system can infer the intended speaking manner from contextual information and generate speech consistent with both the reasoning output and the surrounding scene. The challenge contains two tracks: text-context-aware CoT-TTS and audio-context-aware CoT-TTS. We construct a large-scale bilingual training set from speech-rich media and provide carefully filtered evaluation data for leaderboard comparison. Each system is required to output both a chain-of-thought reasoning analysis and the generated speech waveform. The official evaluation combines objective metrics, multimodal LLM-based evaluation, and human subjective assessment. To facilitate reproducibility, we provide inference code together with a fine-tuning recipe for a 0.6B Qwen3-based model trained via a three-stage strategy. This challenge is expected to support research on context understanding, chain-of-thought reasoning, and expressive speech generation for applications such as film dubbing, audiobook production, virtual characters, and spoken dialogue agents. AgentSteerTTS: A Multi-Agent Closed-Loop Framework for Composite-Instruction Text-to-Speech

While existing text-to-speech (TTS) models exhibit high expressiveness, fine-grained control over composite instructions remains challenging due to the structural mismatch between discrete textual intents and continuous acoustic realizations. Inspired by human cognitive decoupling, we introduce AgentSteerTTS, a multi-agent closed-loop framework designed for intent-faithful expressive control of composite instructions. First, in our framework, an adversarial disentanglement agent mitigates speaker-emotion leakage by learning separable identity and emotion-prosody subspaces with leakage-suppressing regularization. Next, a Dual-Stream Anchoring Controller grounds abstract intents using a large-scale acoustic prototype library: a Retrieval Agent selects expressive anchors, while a Synthesis Agent fuses them into continuous control vectors via gated attention. Finally, a Fast-Slow Feedback Agent refines output intensity through latent gradient correction and resolves semantic-acoustic mismatches using high-level perceptual critique. Experiments on a composite-instruction benchmark and public test sets show that AgentSteerTTS yields consistent and significant improvements to the baselines, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method.
