Speech Signals Complement LLMs for Predicting Interpersonal Attraction in Speed Dating

Abstract

Large language models (LLMs) can predict interpersonal attraction from conversation transcripts, but it remains unclear what a speech predictor can add beyond transcript-only LLM prediction. Using Japanese speed-dating conversations, we combine predictions from a transcript-only LLM and a supervised speech predictor to estimate participants' reported liking of their partners. We show that speech can complement transcript-only LLM prediction, but that this complementarity is conditional rather than universal. Combining the two predictions significantly improves pairwise ranking accuracy over the transcript-only LLM alone in all evaluated conditions. By contrast, gains in per-participant Pearson rr vary across conversation rounds and rating directions, with none significant after correction. Retrospectively, these rr gains are concentrated among participants for whom the speech predictor is more accurate. Speech can therefore retain predictive value even when an LLM predicts attraction from transcripts. The relevant question is not simply whether speech helps, but where its complementarity emerges.

How Do Large Language Models Judge Social Attraction? Evidence from Theory-Grounded Persona Ratings Across Multiple LLMs and Humans

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used to perform subjective evaluations traditionally made by humans, yet their validity as social judges remains unclear. This paper examines whether LLMs can assess social attraction from theory-grounded persona profiles constructed from ten psychological and relational constructs and organized into three tiers: socially attractive, socially mixed, and socially unattractive. We examine LLM ratings in two studies and compare them with human judgments in a third study. In Study 1, 34 LLMs rated 12 profiles across three repeated runs. Although some models tended to give higher or lower ratings overall, they showed strong stability across runs, consistent three-tier ordering, and high agreement in relative profile ordering. Study 2 examined sensitivity to gender presentation using six matched name-and-pronoun profile pairs and a separate pronoun-only test with a gender-neutral name, finding no significant effects in either analysis. In Study 3, 198 human participants evaluated the six matched profiles from Study 2. Their ratings reproduced the three-tier structure and followed a profile ordering consistent with that of the LLMs. However, LLMs rated attractive profiles more positively and unattractive profiles more negatively than humans, while neither group showed a significant overall effect of gender presentation.

Evaluating Large Language Models Abilities for Addressee, Turn-change, and Next Speaker Prediction in Meetings

We investigate turn-taking in multimodal multi-party conversations using large language models (LLMs). We construct an evaluation framework for three tasks: addressee detection, turn-change prediction, and next speaker prediction. We compare supervised models trained for these tasks, text-based LLMs, multimodal LLMs (MM-LLMs), and human subjects. Experiments on the AMI corpus showed that LLMs outperformed supervised models and humans in next speaker prediction, despite not being trained on the target domain and without access to audio or visual information. An MM-LLM performed better than text-based LLMs on addressee detection and turn-change prediction but remained below human performance, indicating difficulty leveraging raw audio-visual signals. Ablation analyses revealed that conversational context was critical, particularly for next speaker prediction. We observed that human and LLM prediction patterns were similar, and intervals with frequent turn changes were difficult for both.

Predicting Psychological Well-Being from Spontaneous Speech using LLMs

We investigate the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) for zero-shot prediction of Ryff Psychological Well-Being (PWB) scores from spontaneous speech. Using a few minutes of voice recordings from 111 participants in the PsyVoiD database, we evaluated 12 instruction-tuned LLMs, including Llama-3 (8B, 70B), Ministral, Mistral, Gemma-2-9B, Gemma-3 (1B, 4B, 27B), Phi-4, DeepSeek (Qwen and Llama), and QwQ-Preview. A domain-informed prompt was developed in collaboration with experts in clinical psychology and linguistics. Results show that LLMs can extract semantically meaningful cues from spontaneous speech, achieving Spearman correlations of up to 0.8 on 80% of the data. Additionally, to enhance explainability, we conducted statistical analyses to characterise prediction variability and systematic biases, alongside keyword-based word cloud analyses to highlight the linguistic features driving the models' predictions.
