Abstract

Answer grounding in visual question answering aims to locate the region from a given natural language question associated with the visual content of an image, which has garnered significant attention due to its practical applications. In this paper, we introduce the Dynamic Dual-level Vision Transformer Fusion Network (DDVT) for answer grounding in visual question answering. Specifically, we propose a question-guided dynamic regional-level module (QGDR) that combines complementary image context through ROI Align and text content, enabling precise localization of text-related visual content. Moreover, we present a cross-modal multi-scale aggregation module (CMA) that enhances feature fusion between pixel-level and region-level features, facilitating the effective localization of visual content associated with grounded answers. Furthermore, we fuse the located visual content with text features to locate the region and provide answers to questions posed about the image. Experimental results demonstrate that our DDVT outperforms state-of-the-art methods on several widely-used benchmarks.

DocAttriBench: Benchmarking Answer Grounding in Document Visual Question Answering

Answer grounding in document visual question answering remains an open challenge: most benchmarks lack grounding annotations or provide limited-quality labels, while constructing grounded datasets still requires costly manual effort. We introduce DocAttriBench (DAB), a large-scale benchmark for fine-grained, element-level source attribution in Document VQA, grounding answers to specific layout elements such as text blocks, tables, and images. To build DAB, we propose a Mask-based Perplexity-Derived Attribution method (MAPPET) that combines document layout and language modeling to identify the most informative element for each answer. MAPPET measures the increase in perplexity after masking candidate elements and attributes the answer to the element contributing most to model confidence. Applying MAPPET to multiple existing Document VQA datasets yields DAB, with 237k documents and 296k question-answer pairs with element-level grounding. We benchmark grounding-capable multimodal LLMs on DAB, evaluating answer accuracy, attribution accuracy, and overall answer quality. Results show that while larger models generally achieve higher answer accuracy, even the strongest models often fail to localize the supporting elements. DAB provides a scalable benchmark for developing grounded, verifiable, and trustworthy Document VQA models. Dataset and code are available at https://aimagelab.github.io/DocAttriBench/.

Vision And Text Transformer For Predicting Answerability On Visual Question Answering

Answerability on Visual Question Answering is a novel and attractive task to predict answerable scores between images and questions in multi-modal data. Existing works often utilize a binary mapping from visual question answering systems into Answerability. It does not reflect the essence of this problem. Together with our consideration of Answerability in a regression task, we propose VT-Transformer, which exploits visual and textual features through Transformer architecture. Experimental results on VizWiz 2020 dataset show the effectiveness and robustness of VT-Transformer for Answerability on Visual Question Answering when comparing with competitive baselines.

AutoVQA-G: Self-Improving Agentic Framework for Automated Visual Question Answering and Grounding Annotation

Manual annotation of high-quality visual question answering with grounding (VQA-G) datasets, which pair visual questions with evidential grounding, is crucial for advancing vision-language models (VLMs), but remains unscalable. Existing automated methods are often hindered by two key issues: (1) inconsistent data fidelity due to model hallucinations; (2) brittle verification mechanisms based on simple heuristics. To address these limitations, we introduce AutoVQA-G, a self-improving agentic framework for automated VQA-G annotation. AutoVQA-G employs an iterative refinement loop where a Consistency Evaluation module uses Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning for fine-grained visual verification. Based on this feedback, a memory-augmented Prompt Optimization agent analyzes critiques from failed samples to progressively refine generation prompts. Our experiments show that AutoVQA-G generates VQA-G datasets with superior visual grounding accuracy compared to leading multimodal LLMs, offering a promising approach for creating high-fidelity data to facilitate more robust VLM training and evaluation.
