Cascade Forgery Mining Network for Fingerprint Presentation Attack Detection

Authors: Hongyan FeiChuanwei HuangZheng WangPengcheng LuoJingwei LiJufu Feng

Abstract

Fingerprint Presentation Attack Detection (PAD) is a critical component of fingerprint identification systems, serving as a protective measure against unauthorized access. In this paper, we observe that different regions of a fingerprint image can exhibit varying Artifact Extraction Difficulty (AED), with high-AED regions requiring more sophisticated extraction mechanisms to capture more subtle discriminative evidence. To address this issue, we propose to quantify AED using local Gabor feature certainty and partition fingerprint images into multiple regions based on their respective AED values. We then propose an AED guided Cascade Forgery Mining Network (CFM-Net) that employs an adaptive-depth feature extraction architecture to detect more precise and comprehensive artifact evidence across regions with heterogeneous AED values. Furthermore, we introduce an Orientation Guided Adversarial Training (OGAT) module to filter out identity information from PAD features while preserving the integrity of original artifact evidence. Experimental evaluations on LivDet datasets demonstrate the superior performance of our approach compared to state-of-the-art methods and achieve significant improvement in the classification ability of high AED fingerprints.

AFID: A Unified Open Framework for Automated Fingermark Identification, Quality Assessment and Feature Extraction

Automated fingermark identification is the foundation of forensic investigation, yet progress in the field is held back by fragmented, closed-source solutions trained on private or discontinued data. We present AFID, a unified open-source framework for friction ridge image processing that performs recognition, quality assessment, and feature extraction based on a single shared encoder, trained exclusively on publicly available data. At its core is a fixed-length representation learned for identity discrimination, trained under heavy augmentation. Despite applying essentially no preprocessing beyond resizing and padding at inference, AFID sets a new state of the art in fixed-length fingermark recognition, leading identification across NIST SD 27 (67.6% rank-1) , SD 302 (54.9% rank-1), and SD 303 (67.6% rank-1), surpassing a commercial matcher on fingermarks. From the same frozen backbone, a quality assessment module predicts recognition utility more accurately than any compared baseline and generalizes across independent matchers, while lightweight decoders recover minutiae, ridge orientation, and segmentation competitive with dedicated methods. The framework proves that a single, efficiently trained encoder can support the full fingermark processing pipeline, from recognition through quality assessment all the way to feature extraction. To accelerate research on fingermark analysis even further, we release the code, models, and annotations to the community.

CPG-PAD: Concept-Informed Prompts Guided Presentation Attack Detection

Presentation Attack Detection (PAD) serves as a crucial safeguard for face recognition systems against presentation attacks such as printed photos, replayed videos, and 3D masks. Despite significant progress, existing PAD models still struggle to generalize across unseen domains due to variations in sensors, lighting, and attack materials. Recent Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have shown strong generalization ability, yet their applications in PAD remain limited because learned prompts, typically optimized under class-label supervision, fail to explicitly align with fine-grained attack-relevant visual semantics. As a result, the learned representations often overfit domain-specific artifacts instead of capturing transferable attack cues. To address this, we propose Concept-Informed Prompts Guided Presentation Attack Detection (CPG-PAD), a framework that introduces model-level concept guidance into the prompt learning process. Specifically, we design a Visual Concept-driven Enhancement (VCE) module that employs eXplainable AI (XAI) techniques to automatically discover PAD-relevant visual concepts and generate concept-associated heatmaps providing localized fine-grained guidance. Guided by these heatmaps, a Prompt-based Concept Injection (PCI) mechanism integrates these concepts into the prompt space through a Visual-Prompt Decoder (VPD) and a concept-mapping loss, enabling prompts to align with the model's internal concept space. This design enables CPG-PAD to capture generalizable and domain-invariant attack cues while effectively suppressing dataset-specific biases. Extensive experiments across nine benchmark datasets demonstrate that CPG-PAD consistently achieves state-of-the-art cross-domain performance under multi-source, limited-source, and single-source settings.

From Vision to Text: A Compact Multimodal Approach for Robust, Cross-Domain Presentation Attack Detection on ID Cards

Cross-domain shifts challenge Presentation Attack Detection (PAD) on ID Cards, given the restricted data available due to privacy concerns. This work proposes a compact multimodal model, based on new generative and discriminative blocks, which combines visual and textual data for PAD on genuine and synthetic ID images. While multimodal models exhibit strong generalisation after supervised fine-tuning, they fail in zero-shot settings. Our findings underscore that model capacity and real-world data are essential for reliable PAD, while existing synthetic datasets may not reflect real-world challenges. We argue for a re-evaluation of synthetic data as a benchmark and emphasise the need for more realistic, diverse datasets to advance PAD research.
