MonitrLLM: A Community-Centered Evaluation Infrastructure for Large Language Models

Abstract

Benchmark suites assess model capability on controlled tasks; large-scale conversation corpora capture naturalistic use without user feedback; and in-interface feedback mechanisms record satisfaction without task purpose. Together, they leave a critical gap in LLM evaluation: no existing infrastructure routinely links interaction trajectories to user-defined outcomes. We introduce MonitrLLM, open-source infrastructure for community-centered LLM evaluations that links full conversation transcripts to user-reported task intent and outcome assessments, treating all three as primary evaluative signals rather than optional metadata. To demonstrate the value of this approach, we conducted a two-week feasibility pilot with 26 college students using ChatGPT, collecting 206 evaluation reports with full conversation transcripts. The findings from our pilot demonstrate the value of connecting conversation trajectories with user-reported outcomes. For instance, despite reporting high average satisfaction (4.19/5) with their LLM interactions, participants also experience a substantial 23.1% failure rate on their goal tasks. We also find that multi-turn conversations are reported as failing at 2.5 times the rate of single-turn exchanges, a pattern that reframes extended interaction as a signal of difficulty rather than engagement. We conclude by discussing the value of incorporating direct user feedback with observational data for robust LLM evaluations, and the possibilities for infrastructure that enables this goal.

Enjoy Your Talk: A Human-Centered Benchmark for Multi-Turn Dialogue with Decoupled User Simulation, Target Modeling, and Judging

Evaluating large language models (LLMs) as multi-turn conversational partners requires probing capabilities that single-turn benchmarks miss: persona consistency, evolving intent tracking, emotional dynamics, and goal completion. We introduce EYT-Bench, a human-centered benchmark built around a three-party decoupled design: a persona-grounded user simulator, a target model that separates intent perception from response generation, and an independent third-party LLM judge with optional multi-judge ensembling. Personas are sampled from public human-curated corpora, Nemotron-Personas-USA and PersonaMem-v2, rather than synthesized, reducing LLM-induced persona bias. EYT-Bench also introduces two trajectory-level metrics: embedding-based intent drift and final-intent completion rate (FICR), inspired by tau-bench. In a 17-target x 200-dialogue evaluation, EYT-Bench reveals four findings: (i) state-of-the-art closed- and open-source models are statistically close on subjective dimensions (empathy / persona / anthropomorphism vary within <= 0.3), but differ by up to 9x on objective intent tracking; (ii) reasoning ("thinking on") sharply improves objective tracking on long-context personas (+0.47-0.50 latent-intent accuracy on Gemma-4) while leaving subjective scores nearly unchanged; (iii) persona format dominates trajectory spread, with FICR saturating above 0.95 on Nemotron-USA but spreading from 0.53 to 0.88 on PersonaMem-v2; and (iv) the warm-up effect is robust on 16/17 models (one outlier, GPT-5.5, reverses the effect), with stable rankings across alpha in [0.05, 0.15]. A cross-judge ablation using deepseek-v4-pro confirms that target rankings and final-intent satisfaction are preserved across judges.

Beyond Ideal Instruction: A Comprehensive Framework for Evaluating LLMs in Realistic Interactions

Despite great advances in tool-use capabilities of large language models (LLMs), existing evaluation benchmarks struggle to fully align with real-world scenarios. Such benchmarks mostly rely on simulated idealized user assumptions and lacks experience-oriented evaluation. These limitations fail to account for the ambiguity, uncooperative behaviors, and shifting intentions characteristic of real-world users. To fill this gap, we propose RUT-Bench, a dedicated benchmark designed to assess LLMs under diverse Real-world User Tool calling scenarios. RUT-Bench supports high-fidelity simulations covering both ideal rational patterns and heterogeneous non-ideal behaviors across single-turn and multi-turn dialogues. We conduct comprehensive evaluations on 19 widely adopted open-source and proprietary LLMs using our benchmark. Experimental results reveal that no tested LLMs achieve an overall success rate above 40%, and nearly all of them experience noticeable performance drops when facing more complicated non-ideal user inputs. Rating the Pitch, Not the Product: User Evaluations of LLMs Reflect Expectations More Than Performance

Imagine two users interact with the same LLM. One has been told it is the cutting-edge flagship model; the other, an older, weaker model. They walk away with markedly different ratings of its usefulness and intelligence, yet they used the same model. In a controlled study, 162 participants each used one of six LLMs from two families across three collaborative tasks, after first viewing a landing page that matched, overstated, or understated their model's true capability. This pre-interaction framing shifted user opinions and interaction behavior while task performance did not. Oversold users rated the model more favorably and used more directive prompting, while Undersold users wrote longer, more collaborative prompts. The quality of what users and the model produced together depended only on the model's true capability, not on what users were told. Participants' change in model impressions after use, measured across two impression measures, was not predicted by task performance (β=0.01β= -0.01 and 0.110.11, both n.s.), but by whether the model met users' expectations (β=0.47β= 0.47 and 0.500.50, both p<.001p < .001) and how confident they felt working with it (β=0.47β= 0.47 and 0.360.36, both p<.001p < .001). After interaction, users are still rating the pitch, not the product: user-elicited LLM evaluations, including the preference data driving public leaderboards, measure expectation management at least as much as the model itself.
