Designing Social Robots for Inclusive Child Wellbeing Assessment: Insights from Communities Supporting Developmental Language Disorder and Forced Migration

Abstract

Assessing children's wellbeing and mental health can be particularly challenging for children experiencing communication barriers, such as children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) and children with forced migration backgrounds. During the assessment process, traditional self-report questionnaires place substantial demands on language comprehension and verbal expression. In this context, social robots have emerged as a promising tool for supporting wellbeing assessment without solely relying on self-report questionnaires, yet limited research has examined how such interactions can be designed to be inclusive, appropriate, and ethically acceptable for children with diverse communication needs. To address this gap, we created candidate child--robot interaction activities as design probes and conducted focus groups with parents and professionals supporting children with DLD and children with forced migration backgrounds. Through thematic analysis, we identified considerations relating to robot role and capabilities, interactional dynamics, individual differences, and child agency, alongside population-specific considerations shaped by children's communication needs and lived experiences. Based on these findings, we derive a set of ethical and inclusive design recommendations for robot-mediated wellbeing assessment. By foregrounding these considerations and recommendations, this work contributes design guidance for inclusive robot-mediated wellbeing assessments for children with diverse communication needs.

Designing Robots to Support Parent-Child Connections: Opportunities Through Robot-Mediated Communication

The sense of family connectedness may support positive outcomes including individual well-being, resilience, and healthy family functioning. However, as technologies advance, they often replace human-human interactions instead of nurturing them. In this work, we investigate how robot-facilitated communication tools might instead create new opportunities for family connection. We conducted two studies with families with children aged 5-12. We first explored the design space through in-home technology probe sessions with six families. These probes inspired us to explore two key interaction design dimensions: the robot's behavior strategy (passive, reactive, proactive) and the mode of communication (synchronous, asynchronous). We then conducted a laboratory study with 20 families to examine how the two dimensions shaped parent-child interaction and connection. Our findings characterize how parents and children appropriated robot-mediated exchanges, the tensions they experienced around initiative, timing, and privacy, and the opportunities they envisioned for supporting everyday connectedness.

Toward Personalized Social Robots for Child Well-being: Data Requirement Principles from a Recommender-System Perspective

Social robots are increasingly deployed in clinical settings to support the well-being of children, where effective support must be personalized to each child. Personalization, choosing the robot action best suited to each child, can be framed as a recommendation problem, and a recently proposed recommender-system framework for social robots offers a principled approach through user profiling, ranking, and responsible computing. Instantiating it, however, is blocked not by the model but by the data, which is hard to gather. A child's state shifts within and across visits, so no fixed description of the user holds. Within a session, the few signals of whether the robot's actions helped are weak and indirect. Across sessions, children are rarely seen more than once, and anonymization breaks the identity needed to link visits. Because care cannot be randomized, existing data is observational, biased toward whatever was already done. Each is a familiar recommender-system problem, and we propose four data principles in response: an integrated profile, effectiveness signals, linkable coverage, and an exposure record logged at collection time. We identify which of these principles each capability requires, and frame them as concrete guidelines for data collection.

Auditing LLM-Governed Social Robots with Culture-Specific Moral Gradients

LLM-governed social robots increasingly decide who receives real-world assistance first. As prioritization norms vary across cultures by age, status, and group size, failure to calibrate pluralistically can scale into unequal access. Yet LLM moral audits remain English-centered, rarely test embodied contexts, leaving pluralistic calibration as an urgent diagnostic gap amid intensifying LLM-robot deployment. We introduce a gradient-based audit framework for multilingual evaluation of LLM moral trade-off behavior against cultural preference gradients. Grounded in nine cross-domain social robotics reviews (>8,000 papers), we derive symmetry-controlled scenarios across care, education, and services, translating the Moral Machine Experiment's "whom to spare" into "whom to assist first" dilemmas with preserved identity trade-offs (many vs. few; young vs. old; higher vs. lower status). We audit four LLMs across four country-language pairs in four prompting regimes (57,600 decisions), benchmarked against country-specific MME preference gradients. Ordinal concordance tests whether models differentiate cultural contexts; a governance typology maps vulnerabilities in gradient differentiation, directional tendency, and deliberation. We find persistent, culturally asymmetric gradient tracking failures that prompting alone cannot reliably correct: quality calibration is nearly twice as strong for Western-language decisions as for Chinese and Japanese; high determinism in majority-first trade-offs often erases cross-cultural gradients; partial sensitivity to age- and status-based norms risks sidelining minorities. Prompting effects are uneven; only contrastive exemplars yield consistent gains, while reasoning-only prompts can worsen tracking. Our results motivate multilingual, pluralistic audits as an LLM-robot pre-deployment gate and suggest model factors are a more robust lever than prompting alone.
