DashArena: Benchmarking LLMs on Interactive Analytic Dashboard Generation

Abstract

Analytic dashboards combine coordinated views and interactions for data exploration and decision-making. Recent models can generate them from data and natural-language goals, but evaluating their usefulness remains difficult. Dashboard generation is open-ended, and neither static appearance nor successful execution alone captures analytical support and interaction quality. We introduce DashArena, to our knowledge the first benchmark for open-ended, task-grounded generation of interactive analytic dashboards. Its key innovation is to require each system to generate both a dashboard and a replayable interaction trajectory. A browser executor replays the trajectory and turns the system's intended analytical workflow into reproducible visual and execution evidence. A VLM judge compares candidates using this evidence, and Bradley--Terry aggregation produces the leaderboard. We further distill the judge into the open-weight DashJudge-8B. Human evaluations show that DashJudge-8B effectively reproduces human judgments and ablations show that interaction evidence improves judge agreement. Experiments with frontier models reveal persistent rendering, analytical, and interaction failures. Together, these results show that realistic dashboard generation remains challenging and that interaction-aware evaluation captures failures missed by static or execution-only checks.

Dashboard2Code: Evaluating Multimodal Models on Reconstructing Interactive Dashboards

Automatic data visualization generation has advanced rapidly with multi-modal large language models, yet existing efforts largely focus on static charts and overlook the interactive dashboards commonly used for real-world data exploration. We introduce Dashboard2Code, a novel task that requires a model to proactively explore an interactive dashboard, acquire and integrate feedback from its own interactions (e.g., clicking and filtering), and generate code that reproduces the target dashboard. To support comprehensive evaluation, we present DashboardMimic, the first Plotly+Dash benchmark for Dashboard2Code, comprising 180 carefully designed and manually verified dashboard-code pairs spanning three difficulty levels and covering eight common real-world interaction patterns. We further propose an automated evaluation framework tailored to dashboards that combines code semantic analysis with dynamic interaction-based testing to assess visual and interaction consistency, showing strong agreement with human judgments. Experiments across a range of open- and closed-source multi-modal models reveal that even the strongest systems struggle on high-complexity dashboards and that a substantial performance gap remains between open-source and closed-source models on the Dashboard2Code task.

RankJudge: A Multi-Turn LLM-as-a-Judge Synthetic Benchmark Generator

As interactive LLM-based applications are created and refined, model developers need to evaluate the quality of generated text along many possible axes. For simpler systems, human evaluation may be practical, but in complicated systems like conversational chatbots, the amount of generated text can overwhelm human annotation resources. Model developers have begun to rely heavily on auto-evaluation, where LLMs are also used to judge generation quality. However, existing LLM-as-a-judge benchmarks largely focus on simple Q&A tasks that do not match the complexity of multi-turn conversations. We introduce RankJudge, a benchmark generator for evaluating LLM-as-a-judge on multi-turn conversations grounded in reference documents. RankJudge creates pairs of conversations where one conversation has a single flaw injected into one turn. This construction allows paired conversations to be labeled unambiguously as better or worse, and precisely isolates failure categories to individual turns, enabling a strict joint correctness criterion for judging. We implement RankJudge across the domains of machine learning, biomedicine, and finance, evaluate 21 frontier LLM judges, and rank those judges via the Bradley-Terry model. Our formulation also allows ranking each conversation pair with difficulty ratings, which we use to dynamically curate the evaluation slice to reduce label noise, as confirmed via human annotation. We find that judge rankings are stable under partial observability, coarser correctness criteria, and an alternative random-walk rating algorithm.

EvoGenUI-Bench: Evaluating LLMs as Multi-Turn Generative UI Assistants

Large language models can generate interactive web interfaces, but reliable generative UI requires maintaining an executable artifact as user requests evolve. We introduce EvoGenUI-Bench, a benchmark for multi-turn interface maintenance comprising 150 five-turn tasks and 750 turns across three scenarios: information presentation, executable interaction, and tool-grounded external state. We execute generated artifacts in a browser and evaluate them using screenshots, source and DOM evidence, actor traces, and runtime logs. Beyond turn-level and episode-level success, we measure cross-turn retention with Adjacent Pass Retention. Across eight models, even the strongest achieves 74.9% Turn Pass while completing only 37.3% of five-turn episodes; APR further falls to 52.4% on tool-grounded tasks. Diagnostic analysis shows that presentation failures center on information architecture, interaction failures on derived-state propagation and affordance binding, and tool-grounded failures additionally involve external-state grounding and requirement decomposition. These results reframe generative UI evaluation from judging isolated outputs to testing whether interface behavior, derived state, external state, and assistant claims remain synchronized as the artifact evolves.
