Visual Framing for News Stance Detection via Image Generation

Abstract

Article-level news stance detection aims to identify the perspective of news articles toward social issues. Despite advances in stance detection and its importance for trustworthy media environments, news articles pose distinct challenges because their stances are often implicit, subtly conveyed through journalistic framing, and embedded in long, structurally complex texts. To address these challenges, we introduce VFStance, which leverages visual framing to make implicit stance cues more explicit via image generation. In evaluation experiments, we demonstrate the effectiveness of VFStance over existing methods and the contribution of visual framing to its performance. Finally, a controlled user study (N=200) in a snippet-based news consumption setting further demonstrates that VFStance can make stance signals visually salient and highlights its potential use beyond automated stance detection.

StanceMoE: Mixture-of-Experts Architecture for Stance Detection

Actor-level stance detection aims to determine an author expressed position toward specific geopolitical actors mentioned or implicated in a text. Although transformer-based models have achieved relatively good performance in stance classification, they typically rely on unified representations that may not sufficiently capture heterogeneous linguistic signals, such as contrastive discourse structures, framing cues, and salient lexical indicators. This motivates the need for adaptive architectures that explicitly model diverse stance-expressive patterns. In this paper, we propose StanceMoE, a context-enhanced Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture built upon a fine-tuned BERT encoder for actor-level stance detection. Our model integrates six expert modules designed to capture complementary linguistic signals, including global semantic orientation, salient lexical cues, clause-level focus, phrase-level patterns, framing indicators, and contrast-driven discourse shifts. A context-aware gating mechanism dynamically weights expert contributions, enabling adaptive routing based on input characteristics. Experiments are conducted on the StanceNakba 2026 Subtask A dataset, comprising 1,401 annotated English texts where the target actor is implicit in the text. StanceMoE achieves a macro-F1 score of 94.26%, outperforming traditional baselines, and alternative BERT-based variants.

NewsLens: A Multi-Agent Framework for Adversarial News Bias Navigation

Media bias detection has predominantly been framed as a classification task: assign a political label to an article or outlet. We argue this framing is too shallow: it identifies that bias exists but not where, how, or crucially, what is structurally omitted. We present NewsLens, a five-agent adversarial pipeline for structured news bias navigation. A Fact Verifier, Progressive Framing Analyst, Conservative Framing Analyst, Propaganda Detector, and Neutral Summarizer collaborate to deconstruct articles into interpretable framing maps, exposing ideological omissions, rhetorical manipulation, and framing boundaries. The system is evaluated on 15 articles across four geopolitical event clusters (India-Pakistan Kashmir, Gaza, Climate Policy, Ukraine) using Qwen2.5-3B-Instruct (4-bit quantised, Google Colab T4), with cross-model validation using Mistral 7B on the Kashmir cluster. Center outlets show the highest mean Perspective Divergence Score (PDS: Qwen 0.907, Mistral 0.729 on Kashmir subset); conservative-framing outlets show the highest mean Manipulation Index (MI: 0.600 across both models). Cross-model comparison shows high consistency for high-propaganda content (Republic World delta-PDS=0.125, MI=0.8 both models) and greater variance for nuanced reporting. Mann-Whitney U tests find no statistically significant between-group differences at n=15, reported honestly as a sample-size limitation confirmed by post-hoc power analysis. A partial ablation removing the Propaganda Detector shows degraded omission precision in the Neutral Summarizer output. The architecture extends prior lexical-geometric bias work to agentic LLM reasoning, and is fully reproducible using open-weight models without API keys.

Zero-shot Tweet-Level Stance Detection Enhanced by External Knowledge and Reflective Chain-of-Thought Reasoning

Zero-shot tweet-level stance detection confronts two primary challenges: (1) mitigating the context sparsity inherent in short texts, and (2) establishing the relevance between implicit targets and textual content. While existing methods primarily focus on incorporating external knowledge, they neglect the intrinsic semantic cues embedded within key intra-textual entities. Furthermore, current models exhibit limited capability in determining the relevance of unseen targets to the given text, thereby struggling to differentiate between "neutral" and "irrelevant" stance labels. To address these issues, we first construct a four-class, multi-topic Japanese tweet dataset. To our knowledge, this is the first Japanese tweet-level dataset for stance detection. We then propose KIRP, a zero-shot stance detection framework. It integrates external knowledge with entity reorganization for data augmentation and employs prompt chaining for reasoning. Specifically, the framework incorporates knowledge graphs to supplement and reorganize key textual entities, while reflective Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning extracts and validates implicit targets. To better distinguish "neutral" from "irrelevant" labels, we adopt stance-aware contrastive learning to capture discriminative features and design a three-layer iterative prototype network for fine-grained classification. Experimental results on SemEval-2016, WT-WT, and KIRP-D show that KIRP achieves state-of-the-art performance. KIRP obtains F1 scores of 84.05% (three-class) on SemEval-2016, and 84.99% and 79.18% (four-class) on WT-WT and KIRP-D, respectively.
