Abstract
Image retouching is commonly formulated as enhancing overall visual quality through color adjustment, but in practice, it also serves to emphasize visual focus by guiding viewers' attention toward a specific subject or region. Achieving such focus-oriented retouching is inherently challenging, as it requires well-coordinated global and local adjustments to manipulate perceptual saliency while maintaining visual naturalness. This intricate process typically demands substantial professional expertise. In this study, we propose EyeControl, a MLLM-driven agent with a diffusion-based retouching executor that enables visual focus enhancement under weak user intent. With only a few clicks or coarse strokes, EyeControl directs visual attention to the intended region, effectively "dotting the eye" of the image. The core idea is to explicitly link the weak user intention with the target editing region and the corresponding tonal adjustment operations during retouching. To achieve this, the system first interprets the intent and image content to infer the visual focus and generate structured intent guidance for the retouching executor. Second, the retouching executor is encouraged to respond more strongly to the target region, explicitly aligning its attention map with a designed pseudo-intent map. We also introduce an operation-consistency constraint to improve coordination between global and local adjustments, achieving more natural and coherent retouching. Additionally, we contribute ControlArt-Bench, a high-quality evaluation dataset for visual focus enhancement. Extensive evaluations demonstrate that EyeControl yields perceptually appealing results with stronger intent alignment. Code can be found in https://github.com/DragonisCV/EyeControl.
Language-guided photo retouching aims to adjust color and tone while preserving geometry and texture. Recently, diffusion-based retouching shows a superior visual quality, but often struggles with both fidelity issues due to its generative nature and efficiency because of its iterative sampling process. In this work, we propose an efficient and fidelity-preserving retouching method using bilateral space manipulation, which is both compact and content-decoupled. Specifically, instead of directly editing pixels or image latents, our model predicts a low-resolution bilateral grid of affine transforms, which are sliced using a learned guidance map and then applied to the full-resolution image. This approach yields both high fidelity and improved efficiency. To retain strong priors of a pretrained generative model, we distill a multi-step diffusion model into our bilateral grid framework using Variational Score Distillation, complemented by a prompt alignment loss to guide instruction-following behavior. Additionally, we introduce a new benchmark and evaluate our method across multiple dimensions: fidelity, instruction following, and efficiency. Compared to the latest retouch methods, like Gemini-2.5-Flash (Nano-Banana), our method can avoid content drift, significantly improve latency, and generate visually pleasing edits, while maintaining a high level of fidelity. Enhancing images to make them visually appealing is a persistent challenge in computer vision. Many deep-learning methods train models on paired datasets to replicate expert editing styles. However, these approaches struggle with two key issues: (1) interpretability and (2) a parametrization suitable for user adjustments. To address these challenges, we present NamedCurves+, an approach inspired by the concept of Color Naming, a universal set of familiar colors widely used in software tools for intuitive editing. Our method integrates color names into a learning-based framework, enabling global adjustments for each named color through tone curves. To address local image variations, we incorporate a transformer block that captures spatial dependencies, enabling context-aware edits across the image. NamedCurves+ enhances the retouching process's interpretability and supports user interaction, allowing flexible modifications of individual tone curves to refine the retouched image according to personal preferences. Extensive experiments on tasks such as image retouching, tone mapping, and exposure correction demonstrate that NamedCurves+ outperforms state-of-the-art methods. Notably, our approach is both explainable, as the tone curves explicitly represent how each color name contributes to the enhancement, and interactive, allowing users to customize the retouching process and achieve results tailored to their liking.

Traditional photographic image editing typically requires users to possess sufficient aesthetic understanding to provide appropriate instructions for adjusting image quality and camera parameters. However, this paradigm relies on explicit human instruction of aesthetic intent, which is often ambiguous, incomplete, or inaccessible to non-expert users. In this work, we propose SmartPhotoCrafter, an automatic photographic image editing method which formulates image editing as a tightly coupled reasoning-to-generation process. The proposed model first performs image quality comprehension and identifies deficiencies by the Image Critic module, and then the Photographic Artist module realizes targeted edits to enhance image appeal, eliminating the need for explicit human instructions. A multi-stage training pipeline is adopted: (i) Foundation pretraining to establish basic aesthetic understanding and editing capabilities, (ii) Adaptation with reasoning-guided multi-edit supervision to incorporate rich semantic guidance, and (iii) Coordinated reasoning-to generation reinforcement learning to jointly optimize reasoning and generation. During training, SmartPhotoCrafter emphasizes photo-realistic image generation, while supporting both image restoration and retouching tasks with consistent adherence to color- and tone-related semantics. We also construct a stage-specific dataset, which progressively builds reasoning and controllable generation, effective cross-module collaboration, and ultimately high-quality photographic enhancement. Experiments demonstrate that SmartPhotoCrafter outperforms existing generative models on the task of automatic photographic enhancement, achieving photo-realistic results while exhibiting higher tonal sensitivity to retouching instructions.
