Abstract

Curating Web corpora for regional language variants like European Portuguese (PT-PT) is heavily bottlenecked by dialectal overlap (mainly with PT-BR) and data processing scale. This paper presents an efficient pipeline to curate a production-ready PT-PT corpus from the Portuguese Web, spanning 411 TB of raw data from Arquivo.pt. We introduce a novel post-scraping block that removes boilerplate and line duplicates prior to filtering. This early-stage intervention increases final document yield by 19.04% by rescuing valid text that standard heuristic filters prematurely discard. Integrated with rigorous language identification, weighted fuzzy deduplication, and neural quality classification, our pipeline offers a scalable framework and a clean, representative corpus optimized for LLM pre-training.

NorBERTo: A ModernBERT Model Trained for Portuguese with 331 Billion Tokens Corpus

High-quality corpora are essential for advancing Natural Language Processing (NLP) in Portuguese. Building on previous encoder-only models such as BERTimbau and Albertina PT-BR, we introduce NorBERTo, a modern encoder based on the ModernBERT architecture, featuring long-context support and efficient attention mechanisms. NorBERTo is trained on Aurora-PT, a newly curated Brazilian Portuguese corpus comprising 331 billion GPT-2 tokens collected from diverse web sources and existing multilingual datasets. We systematically benchmark NorBERTo against Strong baselines on semantic similarity, textual entailment and classification tasks using standardized datasets such as ASSIN 2 and PLUE. On PLUE, NorBERTo-large achieves the best results among the encoder models we evaluated, notably reaching 0.9191 F1 on MRPC and 0.7689 accuracy on RTE. On ASSIN 2, NorBERTo-large attains the highest entailment F1 (~0.904) among all encoders considered, although Albertina-900M and BERTimbau-large still hold an advantage. To the best of our knowledge, Aurora-PT is currently the largest openly available monolingual Portuguese corpus, surpassing previous resources. NorBERTo provides a modern, mid-sized encoder designed for realistic deployment scenarios: it is straight-forward to fine-tune, efficient to serve, and well suited as a backbone for retrieval-augmented generation and other downstream Portuguese NLP systems.

SomaliWeb v1: A Quality-Filtered Somali Web Corpus with a Matched Tokenizer and a Public Language-Identification Benchmark

Somali is a Cushitic language of the Horn of Africa with ~25 million speakers, yet no documented dedicated Somali pretraining corpus with a companion tokenizer and language-identification benchmark has been publicly released. Existing Somali text appears either inside multilingual distributions (HPLT v2, CC100, MADLAD-400, OSCAR, mC4) or in small, undocumented Somali-only uploads on Hugging Face. We introduce SomaliWeb v1, a quality-filtered Somali corpus of 819,322 documents (~303M tokens) built from three upstream sources (HPLT v2, CC100, Somali Wikipedia) through a six-stage reproducible pipeline. We release (i) the corpus, (ii) a matched BPE-16K tokenizer, and (iii) the first public side-by-side Somali benchmark of three production language identifiers. Our measurements reveal concrete quality defects in existing distributions: HPLT v2's "cleaned" Somali release retains 17.3% byte-exact duplicates, 56.1% of its documents contain fixable mojibake, and 10.7% of its byte-unique documents are near-duplicates at Jaccard tau=0.80. Our BPE-16K tokenizer emits 40.2% fewer tokens than GPT-4's cl100k_base on FLORES-200 Somali devtest as a tokenizer-level measurement; downstream language-model perplexity comparisons are deferred to a follow-up release.

Beyond Multilingual Averages: MTEB-PT, a Benchmark for Portuguese Sentence Encoders

Portuguese remains underrepresented in text embedding evaluation, despite being one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. As a result, embedding models are often selected based on English or multilingual metrics, while their effectiveness in Portuguese remains unclear. We present MTEB-PT, a Portuguese benchmark constructed from a subset of MMTEB, comprising 14 existing datasets across Semantic Textual Similarity (STS), classification, retrieval, and reranking. We use this benchmark to evaluate 17 open- and closed-source embedding models under a unified protocol. Our results show that Portuguese performance is strongly task-dependent: multilingual rankings do not reliably predict Portuguese-specific performance across task families, no single model dominates all settings, and models with stronger long-context capacity are particularly advantageous on longer-input tasks such as retrieval and reranking. The benchmark also shows that language-specific fine-tuning still improves model performance in Portuguese, especially on task types that match the adaptation data most closely. To examine this effect, we fine-tune three representative backbone models with Portuguese contrastive supervision and Matryoshka Representation Learning (MRL). These benchmark-informed baselines yield their strongest gains on STS, consistent with the predominantly symmetric supervision used during training, while also improving retrieval and remaining competitive under dimensional truncation. We release the MTEB-PT benchmark, the fine-tuned models, and the training and evaluation code.
