YallaMorph: A Benchmark for Evaluating Arabic Morphological Generation in Large Language Models

Abstract

Arabic morphology remains challenging for large language models, since fluent generation does not guarantee accurate morphosyntactic control. Existing Arabic evaluations mainly target downstream tasks and do not directly test controlled morphological generation from explicit lexical and feature-based input. We introduce YallaMorph, a large-scale benchmark for Arabic morphological generation covering verbs, nouns, adjectives, their cliticized forms, and invalid configurations. We evaluate multilingual and Arabic-oriented LLMs under diacritized and undiacritized settings over 600K benchmark entries. Results show that Arabic morphological generation remains difficult, especially for cliticized, unseen, and morphologically rare forms.

MORPHOGEN: A Multilingual Benchmark for Evaluating Gender-Aware Morphological Generation

While multilingual large language models (LLMs) perform well on high-level tasks like translation and question answering, their ability to handle grammatical gender and morphological agreement remains underexplored. In morphologically rich languages, gender influences verb conjugation, pronouns, and even first-person constructions with explicit and implicit mentions of gender. We introduce MORPHOGEN, a morphologically grounded large-scale benchmark dataset for evaluating gender-aware generation in three typologically diverse grammatically gendered languages: French, Arabic, and Hindi. The core task, GENFORM, requires models to rewrite a first-person sentence in the opposite gender while preserving its meaning and structure. We construct a high-quality synthetic dataset spanning these three languages and benchmark 15 popular multilingual LLMs (2B-70B) on their ability to perform this transformation. Our results reveal significant gaps and interesting insights into how current models handle morphological gender. MORPHOGEN provides a focused diagnostic lens for gender-aware language modeling and lays the groundwork for future research on inclusive and morphology-sensitive NLP.

Arabic Morphosyntactic Tagging and Dependency Parsing with Large Language Models

LLMs perform strongly across NLP, but their ability to produce explicit grammatical analyses remains unclear. Arabic provides a challenging testbed due to its rich morphology and orthographic ambiguity, which create strong morphology-syntax interactions. We present a unified evaluation of LLMs on Arabic morphosyntactic tagging and dependency parsing, covering pre-tokenized, raw-text, and cascaded settings. We compare zero-shot prompting with retrieval-based in-context learning. Relevant demonstrations substantially improve performance. The strongest LLMs approach supervised tagging and parsing systems; however, they require substantial annotated data for demonstration retrieval and considerable computational resources. We make all code and data used in this paper publicly available.

Evaluation of Small Language Models for Arabic Language Processing

This paper evaluates the performance of twelve Small Language Models (SLMs) on Arabic natural language processing tasks. The study introduces a benchmark of 240 Arabic test items distributed across eight domains and ten language skills, covering both comprehension-oriented and generation-oriented tasks. All models were evaluated under a controlled zero-shot setting using a standardized Arabic-only prompt template. Model responses were assessed through a multi-model LLM-as-a-judge framework involving GPT-4.1 Mini, Claude Haiku 4.5, and DeepSeek-Chat, with scores aggregated across judges and analyzed by task, skill, and model family. The results show that Gemma 3 (12B) achieved the highest overall score (4.548/5), followed by Aya and C4AI Command Arabic. The observed results suggest that model size alone does not explain Arabic SLM performance. Models with stronger Arabic alignment and more reliable instruction-following behavior tended to perform better across tasks. Common failure patterns among lower-performing models include prompt leakage, hallucination, language drift, incomplete generation, and weak task adherence. Overall, the benchmark provides a structured reference for evaluating compact Arabic language models and supports future work on efficient, reliable, and culturally appropriate Arabic AI systems.
