Copying Versus Randomization in Lempel-Ziv Music Synthesis

Authors: Nadav MishanRam Zamir

Abstract

We utilize Lempel-Ziv universal compression for music note generation. We control the algorithm's tendency to over-copy or under-copy training data by manipulating the average sequence length saved in the dictionary.

SAME: A Semantically-Aligned Music Autoencoder

Latent representations are at the heart of the majority of modern generative models. In the audio domain they are typically produced by a neural-audio-codec autoencoder. In this work we introduce SAME (Semantically-Aligned Music autoEncoder), an autoencoder for stereo music and general audio that reaches a 4096×\times temporal compression ratio while maintaining reconstruction quality and downstream generative performance. We achieve this by combining a tranformer-based backbone with set of semantic regularisation approaches, phase-aware reconstruction losses and improved discriminator designs. The architecture delivers substantial computational cost benefits, through both its high compression ratio and its reliance on well-optimised transformer primitives. Two variants (a large SAME-L and a CPU-deployable SAME-S) are released in open-weights form.

Generative Modeling of Bach-Style Symbolic Music: A Comparative Study of Autoregressive, Latent-Variable, and Adversarial Approaches

We study generative modeling of Bach-style symbolic piano music using a shared MIDI corpus and three model families: autoregressive LSTMs with attention, latent-variable models including recurrent VAEs and vector-quantized VAEs, and generative adversarial networks. We compare their ability to model polyphonic note sequences, learn useful latent representations, and generate stylistically coherent compositions. Our experiments show that the autoregressive LSTM with attention produces the most musically coherent samples, while vector quantization helps mitigate posterior collapse and yields more structured outputs than conventional recurrent VAEs. The adversarial approach captures local pitch patterns but remains difficult to train and generalizes less reliably to Bach's style. These results highlight the relative strengths and failure modes of autoregressive, latent-variable, and adversarial approaches for symbolic music generation.

Verifier-Guided Twelve-Tone Composition: A Generate-Verify-Repair Harness for Symbolic Music Generation

Large language models can produce superficially legal twelve-tone scores that collapse into degenerate textures. We introduce a neuro-symbolic harness that wraps a language-model proposer in a generate-verify-repair-trace loop with symbolic verification. The complete pipeline improves event-local consistency without claiming whole-piece legality. Across 40 controlled tasks and four paired models, constraint-checked delivery rises from 13.3% under raw generation to 48.1% with the harness; it abstains on the remaining 51.9% of runs. The pass rate of a narrower collision and serialisation-consistency check rises from 33.5% to 58.3%, while degeneracy remains near 0.05, including under adversarial prompting. A blinded evaluation by five experts also shows a descriptive aggregate preference for harness candidates over raw generation in adherence, perceived legality, coherence, and overall quality.
