AlignMorph: Tuning-Free Diffusion Image Morphing via Explicit Semantic Transport

Authors: Wuyi LiuXu HanYuren ChenYige MaoZishuo PengXianzhi Li

Abstract

Image morphing aims to produce a smooth and semantically consistent transition between two input images. Existing diffusion-based morphing methods either require expensive per-pair optimization or rely on implicit spatial alignment, which easily fails under large layout discrepancies. To address these limitations, we propose AlignMorph, a novel tuning-free diffusion framework guided by the principle of transport-then-denoise. We explicitly decouple geometric alignment from generative denoising to avoid structural entanglement. Our framework consists of two core components. (1) Global Semantic Transport, which achieves diffusion-compatible semantic alignment via entropic optimal transport and reliability-aware latent warping; and (2) Coordinate-Aligned Generation, which uses a symmetric bi-phase attention handoff to maintain consistent spatial coordinates throughout denoising. Without any tuning, AlignMorph effectively eliminates ghosting and achieves superior structural coherence and temporal smoothness on morphing benchmarks. CHIMERA: Adaptive Cache Injection and Semantic Anchor Prompting for Zero-shot Image Morphing with Morphing-oriented Metrics

Recent diffusion-based image morphing methods typically interpolate inverted latents and reuse limited conditioning signals, which often yields unstable intermediates for heterogeneous endpoint pairs. In particular, (i) feature reuse is usually partial or non-adaptive, leading to abrupt structural changes or over-smoothing, and (ii) text conditions are commonly obtained independently per endpoint and then interpolated, which can introduce incompatible semantics. We present CHIMERA, a novel zero-shot diffusion morphing framework that addresses both issues via inversion-guided denoising with complementary feature reuse and text conditioning. Adaptive Cache Injection (ACI) caches a broader set of multi-scale diffusion features beyond Key-Value-only reuse during DDIM inversion, and re-injects them with layer- and timestep-aware scheduling to stabilize denoising and enable gradual fusion. Semantic Anchor Prompting (SAP) uses a VLM to generate a shared anchor-prompt and anchor-conditioned endpoint prompts, and injects the anchor into cross-attention to improve intermediate semantic coherence. Finally, we propose Global-Local Consistency Score (GLCS), a morphing-oriented metric that jointly captures global domain harmonization and local transition smoothness. Extensive experiments and a user study show that CHIMERA produces smoother and more semantically consistent morphing results than prior methods, while remaining efficient and applicable across diverse diffusion backbones without retraining.

Discrete Diffusion Bridges for Spatiotemporally Aligned Image Translation and Generation

We propose Discrete Diffusion Bridges (DDB), a novel framework designed to resolve the fundamental spatiotemporal misalignment of standard discrete diffusion in image translation and generation. By corrupting data into a pure mask state via a random schedule, the conventional forward process induces a twofold misalignment: spatially, this pure-mask destination entirely discards the rich structural priors of the source image; temporally, the random masking order inherently contradicts the ``easy-first, hard-last'' decoding mechanism used during inference. To address this, DDB constructs a direct and efficient trajectory between domains. Spatially, we introduce a hybrid absorption mechanism that redefines the absorbing state to a stochastic mixture of mask and source tokens, effectively injecting source prior as spatial anchors into the latent space. Temporally, we design an information-guided noise schedule that quantifies semantic variation to prioritize the corruption of high-information regions at earlier timesteps. This ensures the model learns to resolve difficult semantic changes using robust context from invariant regions. Extensive experiments validate the versatility and robustness of our framework across diverse generative paradigms. DDB effectively balances edit alignment with structural fidelity across both text-guided semantic manipulation and pure structural image translation, while inherently complementing text-to-image generation and guaranteeing robust high-quality decoding under extremely low sampling steps. MorphUNet: Alpha-Controlled Biometric Transport for Diffusion-Based Face Morphing Attacks

Face morphing attacks create synthetic images verifiable against multiple identities, threatening border control and identity verification systems. We introduce MorphUNet, a diffusion morphing framework formulating two-parent generation as alpha-controlled biometric transport: each parent is decomposed into CLIP appearance and ArcFace identity evidence, aligned into a CLIP-compatible token space, with the two contributors preserved as separate identity-aware token banks. To our knowledge, MorphUNet is the first diffusion-based morphing framework using trainable parent-separated dual cross-attention inside the denoising U-Net: a Biometric Transport Layer carrying parent-specific identity evidence through denoising, attending to each parent separately before combining residuals via the morphing parameter alpha. DDIM-inverted latent interpolation gives a coherent denoising start, while weaker-parent-guided selection favours morphs maximising the lower parent-similarity score, reducing collapse toward one contributor. We evaluate MorphUNet against three state-of-the-art baselines (StableMorph, MIPGAN-II, and MorDIFF) on FEI and FRLL using six recognition systems, and propose CFD-based unseen-identity stress testing across gender and ethnicity pairing, demographic shifts, and parent-similarity extremes. MorphUNet achieves the best Morphing Attack Potential (MAP) when at least three of six systems are fooled by one morph, reaching 0.919 on FEI and 0.886 on FRLL, and obtains the best FID on both datasets (35.19 FEI, 44.86 FRLL). It also gives the highest APCER at 5% BPCER in the same-dataset setting, and remains highly difficult to detect under cross-dataset transfer, with APCER 0.996 on FEI and 0.946 on FRLL. The full evaluation analyses MAP, MAD, per-system vulnerability, identity balance, image quality, top/bottom-similarity stress tests, and CFD unseen-identity robustness.
