Abstract

Deep learning has transformed symbolic music generation by borrowing the training paradigms of large language models, with systems such as NotaGen now producing complete, stylistically convincing classical scores from a short prompt. These systems could become powerful creative partners, helping musicians generate endless possibilities. However, current systems expose almost no control handles on the music itself. In principle, control handles could be built into a foundation model trained from scratch, but this is rarely practical without massive amounts of quality annotated data and compute resources. We therefore present MotiGen, a recipe for retrofitting pretrained symbolic music models to use new instruction prompts. MotiGen injects a musical motif as a structured prompt line, reinforces it with a scalar attention bias toward the motif tokens, and learns the association with a two-phase curriculum. First, it learns from focused excerpts cropped around motif occurrences in the training data, then full scores including the motifs. Our experiments show that our model composes with the prompted motif in over 92.3% of generated pieces. Generated pieces using a variety of motifs are included in our sample site: https://motigen-site.github.io/.

Composer Vector: Style-steering Symbolic Music Generation in a Latent Space

Symbolic music generation has made significant progress, yet achieving fine-grained and flexible control over composer style remains challenging. Existing training-based methods for composer style conditioning depend on large labeled datasets. Besides, these methods typically support only single-composer generation at a time, limiting their applicability to more creative or blended scenarios. In this work, we propose Composer Vector, an inference-time steering method that operates directly in the model's latent space to control composer style without retraining. Through experiments on multiple symbolic music generation models, we show that Composer Vector effectively guides generations toward target composer styles, enabling smooth and interpretable control through a continuous steering coefficient. It also enables seamless fusion of multiple styles within a unified latent space framework. Overall, our work demonstrates that simple latent space steering provides a practical and general mechanism for controllable symbolic music generation, enabling more flexible and interactive creative workflows. Text2Score: Generating Sheet Music From Textual Prompts

Developing text-driven symbolic music generation models remains challenging due to the scarcity of aligned text-music datasets and the unreliability of automated captioning pipelines. While most efforts have focused on MIDI, sheet music representations are largely underexplored in text-driven generation. We present Text2Score, a two-stage framework comprising a planning stage and an execution stage for generating sheet music from natural language prompts. By deriving supervision signals directly from symbolic XML data, we propose an alternative training paradigm that bypasses noisy or scarce text-music pairs. In the planning stage, an LLM orchestrator translates a natural language prompt into a structured measure-wise plan defining musical attributes such as instruments, key, time signatures, harmony, etc. This plan is then consumed by a generative model in the execution stage to produce interleaved ABC notation conditioned on the plan's structural constraints. To assess output quality, we introduce an evaluation framework covering playability, readability, instrument utilization, structural complexity, and prompt adherence, validated by expert musicians. Text2Score consistently outperforms both a pure LLM-based agentic framework and three end-to-end baselines across objective and subjective dimensions. We open-source the dataset, code, evaluation set and LLM prompts used in this work; a demo is available on our project page (https://keshavbhandari.github.io/portfolio/text2score).

TASTE: Taxonomy-Aware Symbolic Piano Generation from Textual Description

Text-conditioned symbolic music generation has attracted growing interest with the development of generative models. Yet two questions remain underexplored: what aspects of music the conditioning text should describe, and how the corresponding data should be collected and trained to improve controllability and text-music alignment. We address these challenges with TASTE, a taxonomy-aware framework for symbolic music generation with a main focus on piano pieces. First, we introduce a taxonomy of musical elements that specifies how a piece can be captured through textual description in a musically grounded way. The taxonomy comprises a set of metadata tags (genre, emotion, section plan, etc.) together with a free-form description of music imagery. This structure decomposes textual input to match the generation goal more coherently and precisely. Second, we build a data pipeline for collecting, annotating, and retrieving public symbolic piano resources, yielding a corpus of 432K MIDI files labeled at multiple levels of granularity. Finally, we design a staged training procedure that leverages this multi-granularity data across two model families: an autoregressive model and a non-autoregressive diffusion model. Both objective and subjective evaluations show that our models achieve superior musical-element control, text-description alignment, and overall music quality. We will release the full pipeline, all annotated datasets, and the model checkpoints.
