Abstract

Stereo vision is increasingly used for robotic manipulation, with a growing body of work incorporating it into Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models. However, the scarcity of large-scale, real-world stereo datasets remains a fundamental bottleneck for scaling such policies. Recent generative monocular-to-stereo methods target settings such as VR content and autonomous driving. No prior work produces realistic synthetic stereo data for robotic manipulation, where stereo supervision has come predominantly from simulation. We propose StereoEngine, which introduces two complementary methods to synthesize stereo data for robotic manipulation. In the first, we warp a monocular (left) video into the right view using estimated depth and inpaint the disoccluded regions with a video diffusion model, lifting monocular demonstrations into stereo pairs without training on real stereo. In the second, we render a stereo pair in simulation and jointly generate both photorealistic views, producing consistent left-right data without any real video as input. StereoEngine outperforms existing baselines in generated stereo quality, and using its synthetic data for policy mid-training or task-specific fine-tuning substantially improves downstream bimanual manipulation. StereoPolicy: Improving Robotic Manipulation Policies via Stereo Perception

Recent advances in robot imitation learning have produced powerful visuomotor policies that manipulate diverse objects from visual inputs. However, monocular observations lack depth information, which is critical for precise manipulation in cluttered or geometrically complex scenes. Explicit depth maps and point clouds are often noisy and fragile in real-world manipulation. We introduce StereoPolicy, a visuomotor policy learning framework that directly leverages synchronized stereo image pairs to improve geometric reasoning without constructing explicit 3D representations. StereoPolicy processes each image with pretrained 2D vision encoders and fuses left-right features through a cross-attention-based Stereo Transformer, capturing spatial correspondence and disparity cues implicitly. The framework integrates with diffusion-based and pretrained vision-language-action (VLA) policies, delivering consistent improvements over RGB, RGB-D, point cloud, and multi-view baselines across three simulation benchmarks and seven real-robot tabletop and bimanual mobile manipulation tasks. Our results show that stereo vision bridges 2D pretrained representations and 3D geometric understanding for robotic manipulation.

ExStereo: Lifting 2D Vision-Language-Action Models to 3D with Explicit Stereo Representations

Three-dimensional perception is critical for robotic manipulation, particularly for high-precision tasks, as recovering metric depth and precise 3D object positions from monocular RGB observations is inherently ill-posed. However, many Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models rely solely on RGB observations for perception. Leveraging recent advances in foundation models for stereo matching, we introduce ExStereo, a stereo module that augments pre-trained 2D VLAs with 3D perception. ExStereo reconstructs scene geometry from stereo image pairs and renders multi-view observations as an explicit stereo representation for stereo feature extraction. The action tokens from the action expert selectively attend to the resulting stereo tokens through our proposed action-stereo cross-attention mechanism, enabling the policy to generate robot actions conditioned on 3D scene information. To learn robust 3D representations, we introduce a mid-training stage before task-specific post-training, using a self-supervised learning objective on large-scale stereo data. We validate our approach by fine-tuning two publicly available VLAs, π0.5π_{0.5} and SmolVLA, and evaluate them in simulation and on a real-world bimanual PiPER platform. Across both settings, VLAs fine-tuned with ExStereo consistently outperform baselines, demonstrating the effectiveness of stereo perception for robotic manipulation. RoboCousin: Build Your Own Simulation Playground for Robust Bimanual Robotic Manipulation

Bimanual manipulation policies require large and diverse training datasets, yet collecting demonstrations on physical robots is expensive and difficult to scale. Simulation can generate data efficiently, but existing pipelines typically operate within closed asset libraries and predefined scenes: adding a newly observed object or environment still requires substantial effort to reconstruct geometry, specify physical and semantic properties, annotate interactions, and integrate the result into executable tasks. We present RoboCousin, an extensible simulation-based data-generation platform that turns user-provided observations into reusable assets, scenes, and expert trajectories for bimanual manipulation. Built on RoboTwin~2.0, RoboCousin converts object images into simulation-ready assets with visual and collision geometry, semantic and physical metadata, and automatically generated grasp-contact candidates. It further constructs digital cousins that vary compatible objects, backgrounds, layouts, and language instructions while preserving task-relevant affordances and spatial relations. The same asset system supports tabletop and room-level scene construction, with collision-aware base control for interaction beyond a fixed workspace. We release RoboCousin-OBD, containing more than 3,000 annotated object instances and 50 background environments, and use RoboCousin to generate over one million expert trajectories across 50 tasks. Simulation and real-robot experiments show that the automatically generated interaction annotations are comparable to curated annotations, generated assets provide effective sim-to-real supervision, and tabletop cousins can improve transfer beyond training on a single reconstructed scene. RoboCousin therefore provides a practical path for expanding both the scale and coverage of synthetic bimanual manipulation data.
