Abstract

Human face-to-face conversation requires coordinating speech, gestures and expressions across both speaking and listening. We present ELLSA 2, an end-to-end full-duplex dialogue model that jointly optimizes speech interaction and streaming gesture-expression generation. An autoregressive, chunk-wise synthesizer combines pretrained acoustic features with distinct listening and speaking hidden states from the dialogue backbone and speech synthesizer, enabling continuous non-verbal generation even when the model is verbally silent. To translate dialogue understanding into vivid semantic gestures, we introduce contextual semantic calls and template guidance, separating whether to invoke an available semantic gesture from how to realize it. We also establish a curated data and evaluation pipeline for dialog-aware co-speech gesture generation and investigate reference-based multimodal large language models (MLLMs) as automatic judges. Experiments show that ELLSA 2 remains highly competitive with open-source full-duplex speech interaction models and outperforms cascaded baselines across dialog-aware gesture and expression metrics. Semantic template guidance further significantly improves semantic gesture quality. Strong system-level correlations with human judgments support these reference-based scores as useful preliminary metrics for full-duplex and semantic gesture assessment. Together, these results advance dialogue modeling from spoken responses toward coordinated multimodal interaction.

Integrating Facial Generation into Full-Duplex Spoken Dialogue Systems

Full-duplex spoken dialogue models, such as Moshi, enable natural, low-latency voice conversations. However, they remain limited to the audio modality, lacking the facial expressions that are integral to human communication. We present Moshi-Face, the first full-duplex dialogue model that jointly processes the user's audio and facial input while simultaneously generating speech and facial motion. We first construct a vector-quantized variational autoencoder (VQ-VAE) as a face codec that encodes 3D head meshes extracted from facial videos into compact discrete tokens, referred to as face tokens, and conversely reconstructs 3D meshes from these tokens. We then extend Moshi with a Face Transformer module that generates face tokens non-autoregressively, enabling Moshi-Face to produce synchronized audio and face tokens in real time. Experiments show that Moshi-Face achieves audiovisual alignment at low latency while preserving the dialogue quality of the original audio-only model.

TASTE2: Text-Aligned Speech Modeling and Deployment toward Full-Duplex Voice Interaction

Full-duplex voice interaction requires more than utterance-level conversion. It must process streaming speech, manage turn-taking and interruptions, while preserving pretrained linguistic competence and acoustic paralinguistic cues. We ask whether TASTE (Text-Aligned Speech Tokenization and Embedding) provides a viable path toward this goal. We present TASTE2, which transforms utterance-level TASTE into an incremental dialogue stack. A shared text-token vocabulary removes word-level averaging, while modality-aligned dialogue training predicts one continuous audio latent per text token without interleaving heterogeneous token streams. An incremental Speech Detokenizer enables streaming synthesis through CosyVoice2. After speech and dialogue training, TASTE2 (Merge) reaches 56.3% on LLaMA-Questions against a 57.3% Qwen2.5-7B Instruct text-only reference (98.2% accuracy retention), and TASTE2 (Direct) reaches 53.0% (92.4% retention). We build TASTE2 VoiceBot, which processes user speech incrementally, streams synthesized audio, and stops generation on barge-in. On Full-Duplex-Bench v1.0, TASTE2 and TASTE2 VoiceBot handle interruptions well while maintaining high conversational coherence. Natural conversation remains challenging, and deployed mean time to first audio is 2.701 s on two NVIDIA RTX A6000 after TensorRT acceleration. Finally, to our knowledge, we provide the first systematic characterization of explicit paralinguistic control in a TASTE based model. Fast speaking rate serves as a cross-strategy proof of concept after dialogue SFT, while emotion control is strategy dependent and the remaining attributes stay weak. Together, these results establish TASTE based modeling as a practical route toward full-duplex systems while identifying natural conversation robustness, speech generation latency, and feature general paralinguistic control as open challenges. Let Me Look at You: Advanced Facial Expression Modeling for Conversational Speech Synthesis

Conversational Speech Synthesis is a fundamental component of human-computer interaction, aiming to generate contextually appropriate, expressive, and empathetic speech. However, facial expressions encode subtle and rich affective cues that are crucial for empathetic speech interaction, whereas existing approaches often overlook this important modality. In addition, the lack of large-scale natural conversational datasets with both speech and visual modalities also limits the development of visual affect understanding in conversational settings. To address these limitations, we propose FacialTalker, a facial-expression-aware CSS framework built upon a large language model backbone. To efficiently encode facial expressions, we propose AUTokenizer, a single-codebook visual tokenizer that discretizes each frame-level facial expression into a compact token, trained with supervision from combinations of facial Action Units. We further introduce a dual direct preference optimization (DualDPO) strategy, which extends the DPO by jointly imposing preference constraints on both visual and speech token sequences, to enhance the model's understanding of facial expressions and speech semantics in multimodal conversational contexts. Moreover, we construct VSDD-1K, a large-scale multimodal dialogue dataset collected through a fully automated pipeline from real-world Internet conversations, comprising over 1,033 hours of synchronized speaker videos and speech, with more than 85% of frames containing valid faces. Extensive objective and subjective experiments demonstrate that FacialTalker consistently outperforms strong baselines in facial-expression perception and speech synthesis quality, generating speech that is more natural, expressive, and better aligned with the conversational context. The results also validate the effectiveness of our training strategy and dataset construction pipeline.
