Abstract

Recent closed-source image generation systems can produce diverse visual content from simple compositions to information-dense graphics, yet open-weight text-to-image models still struggle with dense text and intricate layouts. To narrow this gap, we introduce MOSS-Image, an open generation system that combines high-fidelity visual synthesis with intent-aware composition. First, we pretrain a 5B single-stream diffusion transformer (DiT) from scratch with a carefully designed recipe, enabling bilingual long-form text rendering and precise layout control. Second, we develop an intention-aware agentic prompt enhancement (PE) module that translates diverse user requests into detailed content and layout specifications. Together, they enable MOSS-Image to generate text-rich and layout-coherent images. We further introduce LongLongTextBench (LLTB) for evaluating long-form English and Chinese text rendering, and RealLayoutArena (RLA) for end-to-end layout-rich generation. MOSS-Image achieves state-of-the-art performance among open-weight models on LLTB, with an average text coverage of 96.3%. On RLA, MOSS-Image ranks second in the end-to-end system comparison, while its backbone ranks first among generators evaluated with shared enhanced prompts. We will release the model, training recipe, and evaluation framework to support further research and promote the text-to-image community.

Boogu-Image-0.1: Boosting Open-Source Unified Multimodal Understanding and Generation

We introduce Boogu-Image-0.1, an open-source unified multimodal understanding and generation model family, comprising Base, Turbo, Edit, and Edit-Turbo variants. It delivers competitive performance in high-quality text-to-image generation, fast inference, instruction-based editing, and bilingual (Chinese-English) text rendering. Closed-source multimodal systems like Nano-Banana-Pro and GPT-Image-2 achieve strong performance through system-level integration rather than a single model, yet their internal practices remain largely undisclosed. In this work, we demonstrate that targeted improvements in model understanding, data quality, and training pipelines, coupled with agentic inference-time scaling, can substantially enhance generation and editing performance even under highly constrained compute budgets. Comprehensive evaluations show that Boogu-Image-0.1 consistently matches or surpasses other open-source models across standard benchmarks, and achieves results approaching leading closed-source systems. Notably, this is accomplished with only 208.62 million unique images. The base model's theoretical training cost is only approximately $400K. We share practical discussions that we believe are valuable to the broader research community, and release weights, code, and recipes under Apache 2.0 to advance the open ecosystem for unified multimodal understanding and generation. ERNIE-Image Technical Report

We introduce ERNIE-Image, an open-source text-to-image generation model built upon an 8B single-stream DiT architecture. ERNIE-Image aims to bridge the gap between current open-source models and leading closed-source systems through more effective mining of large-scale pre-training data and improved supervision quality throughout training. During pre-training, we adopt a bottom-up data construction pipeline that combines fine-grained image categorization, rich caption annotation, aesthetic assessment, and hierarchical sampling. This strategy reduces data noise while preserving long-tail concepts and detailed real-world knowledge, providing a stronger foundation for complex generation tasks. In the post-training stage, we use a top-down data construction pipeline for high-demand scenarios, diversify prompt annotations to better match real user inputs, and apply a stabilized DPO strategy to align the model with human aesthetic preferences. We further train ERNIE-Image-Turbo for efficient 8-NFE generation and propose MT-DMD to mitigate capability drift during distillation. To make the model easier to use in practical scenarios, we equip it with a lightweight Prompt Enhancer that expands concise user intents into structured visual descriptions. In addition, we develop ERNIE-Image-Aes, an industrial-grade aesthetic model, together with ERNIE-Image-Aes-1K, a human-annotated benchmark for realistic aesthetic evaluation. Extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments show that ERNIE-Image achieves leading performance among open-source models and approaches top-tier commercial models in instruction following, text rendering, and aesthetic quality. We release the trained models and aesthetic resources to facilitate further academic research and technical progress in the AIGC community.

Mural: Transferring LLM knowledge to image generation via Mixture-of-Transformers

Leveraging capabilities of large language models (LLMs) in text-to-image (T2I) synthesis is an important research direction. In this work we investigate whether the knowledge of a frozen LLM can be effectively utilized in T2I generation when trained exclusively on standard text-image pairs. We integrate a frozen, reasoning-capable LLM with a diffusion-based image generator via shared attention within the Mixture-of-Transformers (MoT) architecture. Our experiments span two critical questions: (1) what degree of the LLM's intrinsic knowledge remains accessible during T2I training, and (2) what novel capabilities emerge in the resulting system. Across established benchmarks, our models achieve strong performance among unified understanding-generation systems: 0.85 on GenEval, 86.75 on DPG-Bench, and 0.66 on WISE with inference-time reasoning, using only text-image data. Remarkably, we uncover emergent behaviors absent from training data, including cross-lingual image generation, color-guided composition, emoji / ASCII scene construction, and generation directed by world knowledge. These results demonstrate that pretrained LLM knowledge can guide image synthesis under standard text-to-image training paradigms, without interleaved multimodal signals or explicit reasoning supervision. Our findings open new avenues for harnessing frozen model capabilities in resource-constrained multimodal learning.
