Abstract

Reinforcement Learning with Verifiable Rewards (RLVR) has improved the performance of large Vision-Language Models (VLMs) on image quality assessment (IQA). Existing approaches often attribute these gains to improved reasoning before scoring, supported by increasingly plausible Chain-of-Thought (CoT). However, whether these gains exceed sampling effects and how they depend on explicit reasoning remain unclear. We rigorously investigate these questions through sampling-aware evaluation, controlled reasoning interventions, and shortcut experiments. We find that RL-trained models outperform base models under large-budget max⁡g@k\operatorname{max}_g@k evaluation, while improvements beyond averaging are concentrated in-distribution. RLVR produces chains that raise base-model performance when transplanted and improves scoring with the chain held fixed. Yet scoring becomes less dependent on the chain during inference, more clearly at 7B than at 32B. Steering the probed quality direction in thinking tokens also has little effect on scoring. Finally, RL can improve scoring accuracy by exploiting textual cues correlated with mean opinion scores (MOSs), which could inflate benchmark performance. Together, these findings show that RLVR raises quality scoring and produces more useful chains, but that better scoring does not imply a stronger reliance on explicit reasoning, while score-based rewards can also encourage reliance on quality-irrelevant shortcuts. We hope this preliminary study can enlighten more and more concrete reasoning schemes in IQA.

ME-IQA: Memory-Enhanced Image Quality Assessment via Re-Ranking

Reasoning-induced vision-language models (VLMs) advance image quality assessment (IQA) with textual reasoning, yet their scalar scores often lack sensitivity and collapse to a few values, so-called discrete collapse. We introduce ME-IQA, a plug-and-play, test-time memory-enhanced re-ranking framework. It (i) builds a memory bank and retrieves semantically and perceptually aligned neighbors using reasoning summaries, (ii) reframes the VLM as a probabilistic comparator to obtain pairwise preference probabilities and fuse this ordinal evidence with the initial score under Thurstone's Case V model, and (iii) performs gated reflection and consolidates memory to improve future decisions. This yields denser, distortion-sensitive predictions and mitigates discrete collapse. Experiments across multiple IQA benchmarks show consistent gains over strong reasoning-induced VLM baselines, existing non-reasoning IQA methods, and test-time scaling alternatives.

Multi-Granularity Reasoning for Image Quality Assessment via Attribute-Aware Reinforcement Learning to Rank

Recent advances in reasoning-induced image quality assessment (IQA) have demonstrated the power of reinforcement learning to rank (RL2R) for training vision-language models (VLMs) to assess perceptual quality. However, existing approaches operate at a single granularity, predicting only an overall quality score, while overlooking the multi-dimensional nature of human quality perception, which encompasses attributes such as sharpness, color fidelity, noise level, and compositional aesthetics. In this paper, we propose MG-IQA (Multi-Granularity IQA), a multi-granularity reasoning framework that extends RL2R to jointly assess overall image quality and fine-grained quality attributes within a single inference pass. Our approach introduces three key innovations: (1) an attribute-aware prompting strategy that elicits structured multi-attribute reasoning from VLMs; (2) a multi-dimensional Thurstone reward model that computes attribute-specific fidelity rewards for group relative policy optimization; and (3) a cross-domain alignment mechanism that enables stable joint training across synthetic distortion, authentic distortion, and AI-generated image datasets without perceptual scale re-alignment. Extensive experiments on eight IQA benchmarks demonstrate that MG-IQA consistently outperforms state-of-the-art methods in both overall quality prediction (average SRCC improvement of 2.1%) and attribute-level assessment, while generating interpretable, human-aligned quality descriptions.

Q-Tacit: Image Quality Assessment via Latent Visual Reasoning

Vision-Language Model (VLM)-based image quality assessment (IQA) has been significantly advanced by incorporating Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning. Recent work has refined image quality reasoning by applying reinforcement learning (RL) and leveraging active visual tools. However, such strategies are typically language-centric, with visual information being treated as static preconditions. Quality-related visual cues often cannot be abstracted into text in extenso due to the gap between discrete textual tokens and quality perception space, which in turn restricts the reasoning effectiveness for visually intensive IQA tasks. In this paper, we revisit this by asking the question, "Is natural language the ideal space for quality reasoning?" and, as a consequence, we propose Q-Tacit, a new paradigm that elicits VLMs to reason beyond natural language in the latent quality space. Our approach follows a synergistic two-stage process: (i) injecting structural visual quality priors into the latent space, and (ii) calibrating latent reasoning trajectories to improve quality assessment ability. Extensive experiments demonstrate that Q-Tacit can effectively perform quality reasoning with significantly fewer tokens than previous reasoning-based methods, while achieving strong overall performance. This paper validates the proposition that language is not the only compact representation suitable for visual quality, opening possibilities for further exploration of effective latent reasoning paradigms for IQA.
