Abstract

Photorealistic avatar videos decouple the appearance of a rendered face from the person who operates it, which makes conventional face recognition unsuitable for identifying the operator. Verifying the operator therefore requires representations of how a face moves that are insensitive to what the avatar looks like. We propose a verification framework built without any external pretrained model. It uses two complementary modalities provided for each sample: facial landmark sequences and video frames. From the landmark modality, it learns motion representations by diffusion masked pretraining over grouped landmarks, guided by lightweight auxiliary tasks that predict behavioral cues such as motion intensity and eye openness, and turns them into operator embeddings with a contrastive linear probe. To generalize to unseen avatar generators, the pretraining input is randomly transformed to simulate how a generator may alter the operator's motion. From the video modality, it captures fine facial motion through differences between consecutive frames. The embeddings of the two modalities are combined into one. Our approach reaches an overall AUC of 0.769 on the WBA2026 benchmark. Linear probing shows that the video embedding retains little information about the avatar's identity, whereas the landmark embedding retains some, and fusing the two modalities improves verification in particular across speaking and listening modes.

Micro-Expression-Aware Avatar Fingerprinting via Inter-Frame Feature Differencing

Avatar fingerprinting, i.e., verifying who drives a synthetic talking-head video rather than whether it is real, is a critical safeguard for authorized use of face-reenactment technology. Existing methods rely on a fixed, non-differentiable landmark extraction stage that prevents the fingerprinting model from being optimized end-to-end from raw pixels. We propose a preprocessing-free system built on a micro-expression-aware backbone operating on raw video frames, with inter-frame feature differencing as the core design principle: consecutive feature maps are subtracted in the learned deep feature space, so that temporally stable appearance dimensions contribute zero to the output while driver-specific motion dynamics are preserved. A controlled ablation on NVFAIR confirms that temporal motion accounts for the large majority of discriminative performance, and that raw appearance features actively degrade identity separation. Both the choice of backbone and the differencing principle are essential: differencing alone is insufficient when applied to a generic encoder, as appearance-dominated features collapse to near-identical representations across adjacent frames, while the micro-expression-aware F5C backbone retains measurable motion variation that the differencing operation can exploit. Without any external preprocessing, our model achieves an overall AUC of 0.877 on NVFAIR and matches or exceeds the landmark-based baseline on the majority of cross-generator pairs.

Leveraging Avatar Fingerprinting: A Multi-Generator Photorealistic Talking-Head Public Database and Benchmark

Recent advances in photorealistic avatar generation have enabled highly realistic talking-head avatars, raising security concerns regarding identity impersonation in AI-mediated communication. To advance in this challenging problem, the task of avatar fingerprinting aims to determine whether two avatar videos are driven by the same human operator or not. However, current public databases in the literature are scarce and based solely on old-fashioned talking-head avatar generators, not representing realistic scenarios for the current task of avatar fingerprinting. To overcome this situation, the present article introduces AVAPrintDB, a new publicly available multi-generator talking-head avatar database for avatar fingerprinting. AVAPrintDB is constructed from two audiovisual corpora and three state-of-the-art avatar generators (GAGAvatar, LivePortrait, HunyuanPortrait), representing different synthesis paradigms, and includes both self- and cross-reenactments to simulate legitimate usage and impersonation scenarios. Building on this database, we also define a standardized and reproducible benchmark for avatar fingerprinting, considering public state-of-the-art avatar fingerprinting systems and exploring novel methods based on Foundation Models (DINOv2 and CLIP). Also, we conduct a comprehensive analysis under generator and dataset shift. Our results show that, while identity-related motion cues persist across synthetic avatars, current avatar fingerprinting systems remain highly sensitive to changes in the synthesis pipeline and source domain. The AVAPrintDB, benchmark protocols, and avatar fingerprinting systems are publicly available to facilitate reproducible research.

Avatar V: Scaling Video-Reference Avatar Video Generation

Generating avatar videos that are not merely visually similar to a target individual but behaviorally recognizable, faithfully reproducing their talking rhythm, gestural tendencies, and expression dynamics, remains an open challenge. Existing methods predominantly condition on single static images, which provide insufficient identity information and cannot capture dynamic motion traits, while standard pixel-level objectives underserve the perceptually critical facial regions that determine avatar fidelity. We present Avatar V, a production-scale framework that addresses these limitations through video-reference-conditioned identity modeling. Rather than compressing identity into fixed-size embeddings, the model conditions directly on the full token sequence of a reference video, learning to reproduce both static identity attributes (facial geometry, skin texture) and dynamic behavioral patterns (talking rhythm, micro-expressions) through attention over the reference context. We introduce Sparse Reference Attention, an asymmetric mechanism achieving linear-complexity conditioning on arbitrarily long references; a motion representation stream enabling closed-loop talking style transfer; and an identity-aware super-resolution refiner inheriting the full reference conditioning. These are supported by a data engine curating 100M+ training clips from 50M raw videos, and a five-stage training pipeline with flow matching pre-training, personality fine-tuning, two-phase distillation (>10x acceleration), and RLHF alignment, deployed across thousands of GPUs. Avatar V generates 1080p videos of unlimited duration, achieving state-of-the-art identity preservation, lip synchronization, and generation quality on our cross-scene benchmark, consistently outperforming leading systems including Seedance 2.0, Kling O3 Pro, Veo 3.1, and OmniHuman 1.5 in both automated metrics and human evaluation.
