Medical Code Prediction

Medical code prediction automates the assignment of standardized medical codes (like ICD codes) to unstructured clinical notes, aiming to improve efficiency and accuracy in healthcare documentation. Current research focuses on improving prediction accuracy using deep learning models, particularly those incorporating attention mechanisms, multi-stage retrieval and re-ranking, and curriculum learning strategies that leverage the hierarchical structure of medical code systems. These advancements address challenges posed by the high dimensionality and long-tailed distribution of medical codes, ultimately aiming to reduce the time and effort required for manual coding while enhancing the reliability and interpretability of medical records.
