Pragmatic Constraint
Pragmatic constraint research investigates how implicit contextual information and real-world knowledge influence language understanding and generation, going beyond the literal meaning of words. Current work focuses on incorporating pragmatic awareness into AI systems, particularly in conversational AI and question-answering, by identifying and addressing limitations in existing models' ability to handle nuanced meaning and implicit assumptions. This research is crucial for improving the robustness and helpfulness of AI systems, particularly in sensitive domains like healthcare, and for advancing our understanding of human communication and language evolution by bridging the gap between human and artificial communication.
