Shared Modular Recurrence in Contextual MDPs for Universal Morphology Control

A universal controller for any robot morphology would greatly improve computational and data efficiency. Steps have been made towards such multi-robot control by utilizing contextual information about the properties of individual robots and exploiting their modular structure in the architecture of deep reinforcement learning agents. When the robots have highly dissimilar morphologies, however, this becomes a challenging problem, especially when the agent must generalize to new, unseen robots. In this paper, we posit that contextual features are often only partially available, but that they can be recovered through modular interactions. This can allow for better multi-robot control and generalization to contexts that are not seen during training. To this extent, we implement a transformer-based architecture with shared modular recurrence and evaluate its (generalization) performance on a large set of MuJoCo robots. The results show a substantial improvement in zero-shot generalization performance on robots with unseen dynamics, kinematics, and topologies, in four different environments.

Topology-Guided Modular Actor-Critic Learning for Continuous Systems under Temporal Objectives

We study formal policy synthesis for continuous-state stochastic systems under linear temporal logic specifications. The product of the system with the automaton of the specification has a hybrid state space with sparse rewards. We introduce a generalized optimal backup order, defined in reverse to a topological order over automaton states, that guides value backups and provably preserves optimality. We further present a model-free actor-critic algorithm whose policy evaluation solves a constrained optimization problem by the augmented Lagrangian method, yielding hyperparameter self-tuning, and prove its optimality and convergence in the tabular case. Since integer encodings of automaton states impose a spurious ordinal relationship on functions learned by one network, we dedicate a value and a policy network to each automaton state (modular learning). The algorithm matches or outperforms PPO, DQN, and A2C on CartPole, and on a Dubins car under a temporal specification the topological order and modular learning raise the success rate from 26.0% to 71.5%.

Simplifying ROS2 controllers with a modular architecture for robot-agnostic reference generation

This paper introduces a novel modular architecture for ROS2 that decouples the logic required to acquire, validate, and interpolate references from the control laws that track them. The design includes a dedicated component, named Reference Generator, that receives references, in the form of either single points or trajectories, from external nodes (e.g., planners), and writes single-point references at the controller's sampling period via the existing ros2_control chaining mechanism to downstream controllers. This separation removes duplicated reference-handling code from controllers and improves reusability across robot platforms. We implement two reference generators: one for handling joint-space references and one for Cartesian references, along with a set of new controllers (PD with gravity compensation, Cartesian pose, and admittance controllers) and validate the approach on simulated and real Universal Robots and Franka Emika manipulators. Results show that (i) references are tracked reliably in all tested scenarios, (ii) reference generators reduce duplicated reference-handling code across chained controllers to favor the construction and reuse of complex controller pipelines, and (iii) controller implementations remain focused only on control laws.
