Unveiling the Unborn: Advancing Fetal Health Classification through Machine Learning

Authors: Sujith K Mandala

Abstract

Fetal health classification is a critical task in obstetrics, enabling early identification and management of potential health problems. However, it remains challenging due to data complexity and limited labeled samples. This research paper presents a novel machine-learning approach for fetal health classification, leveraging a LightGBM classifier trained on a comprehensive dataset. The proposed model achieves an impressive accuracy of 98.31% on a test set. Our findings demonstrate the potential of machine learning in enhancing fetal health classification, offering a more objective and accurate assessment. Notably, our approach combines various features, such as fetal heart rate, uterine contractions, and maternal blood pressure, to provide a comprehensive evaluation. This methodology holds promise for improving early detection and treatment of fetal health issues, ensuring better outcomes for both mothers and babies. Beyond the high accuracy achieved, the novelty of our approach lies in its comprehensive feature selection and assessment methodology. By incorporating multiple data points, our model offers a more holistic and reliable evaluation compared to traditional methods. This research has significant implications in the field of obstetrics, paving the way for advancements in early detection and intervention of fetal health concerns. Future work involves validating the model on a larger dataset and developing a clinical application. Ultimately, we anticipate that our research will revolutionize the assessment and management of fetal health, contributing to improved healthcare outcomes for expectant mothers and their babies.

Trusted Multi-View Deep Learning Classification of Fetal Congenital Heart Disease with Feature-level and Decision-level Fusion

Congenital heart disease (CHD) refers to the abnormal anatomical structure caused by the abnormal development of the heart and great vessels during embryonic development. Traditional diagnostics often fail to achieve high accuracy and efficiency, especially given the complexity of cardiac anatomy. This study presents a specialized multi-view deep learning framework for CHD binary classification using echocardiographic images. A large-scale CHD dataset, including five views, was used to train the model, enabling it to integrate multi-angle image data. The framework utilizes advanced feature extraction and attention mechanisms to improve diagnostic precision and reliability. An uncertainty-based decision-making component is also integrated to handle low-quality images, enhancing diagnostic outcomes. Experimental results show that this method achieves top-tier performance on our dataset and provides a robust tool for early CHD detection, underscoring its potential for clinical use. The dataset and source code will be released upon paper acceptance.

Synergistic Foundation Models for Semi-Supervised Fetal Cardiac Ultrasound Analysis: SAM-Med2D Boundary Refinement and DINOv3 Semantic Enhancement

We present a semi-supervised framework for joint segmentation and classification of fetal cardiac ultrasound images. Built upon the EchoCare multi-task backbone, our method integrates SAM-Med2D for boundary refinement and leverages DINOv3 to enhance pseudo-label quality. We introduce view-specific hard masking along with a two-stage optimization strategy: an EMA phase to consolidate segmentation capabilities, followed by a Classification Fine-Tuning phase that freezes segmentation parameters and resets the classification head to recover classification performance without compromising segmentation gains. Evaluated on the FETUS 2026 leaderboard, our method achieves a Dice Similarity Coefficient at 79.99%, Normalized Surface Distance at 61.62%, and F1-score at 41.20%, validating the effectiveness of our approach for prenatal congenital heart disease screening. Attention-ResUNet for Automated Fetal Head Segmentation

Automated fetal head segmentation in ultrasound images is critical for accurate biometric measurements in prenatal care. While existing deep learning approaches have achieved a reasonable performance, they struggle with issues like low contrast, noise, and complex anatomical boundaries which are inherent to ultrasound imaging. This paper presents Attention-ResUNet. It is a novel architecture that synergistically combines residual learning with multi-scale attention mechanisms in order to achieve enhanced fetal head segmentation. Our approach integrates attention gates at four decoder levels to focus selectively on anatomically relevant regions while suppressing the background noise, and complemented by residual connections which facilitates gradient flow and feature reuse. Extensive evaluation on the HC18 Challenge dataset where n = 200 demonstrates that Attention ResUNet achieves a superior performance with a mean Dice score of 99.30 +/- 0.14% against similar architectures. It significantly outperforms five baseline architectures including ResUNet (99.26%), Attention U-Net (98.79%), Swin U-Net (98.60%), Standard U-Net (98.58%), and U-Net++ (97.46%). Through statistical analysis we confirm highly significant improvements (p < 0.001) with effect sizes that range from 0.230 to 13.159 (Cohen's d). Using Saliency map analysis, we reveal that our architecture produces highly concentrated, anatomically consistent activation patterns, which demonstrate an enhanced interpretability which is crucial for clinical deployment. The proposed method establishes a new state of the art performance for automated fetal head segmentation whilst maintaining computational efficiency with 14.7M parameters and a 45 GFLOPs inference cost.
