Camellia: Benchmarking Cultural Biases in LLMs for Asian Languages

Abstract

As Large Language Models (LLMs) develop stronger multilingual capabilities, their sensitivity to culturally diverse entities becomes increasingly important. Prior work by Naous et al. (2024) has shown that LLMs often favor Western-associated entities in Arabic. Due to the lack of entity-centric multilingual benchmarks, it remains unclear if such biases also manifest in various non-Western languages. In this paper, we introduce Camellia, a benchmark for evaluating entity-centric cultural biases in nine Asian languages, spanning six Asian cultures. Camellia includes 19,530 manually annotated entities associated with the covered Asian or Western cultures, as well as 2,173 masked contexts for these entities derived from social media posts. Using Camellia, we evaluate cultural biases in four recent multilingual LLMs across three tasks: cultural context adaptation, sentiment association, and entity extractive QA. Our analyses show that LLMs struggle with cultural adaptation across these languages, with performance differing across models developed in different regions. We further observe that different LLM families can hold distinct biases, reflected in the ways they link cultures to particular sentiments. Lastly, we find that LLMs can struggle with context understanding in some Asian languages, creating performance gaps between cultures in entity extraction.

Why are all LLMs Obsessed with Japanese Culture? On the Hidden Cultural and Regional Biases of LLMs

LLMs have been showing limitations when it comes to cultural coverage and competence, and in some cases show regional biases such as amplifying Western and Anglocentric viewpoints. While there have been works analysing the cultural capabilities of LLMs, there has not been specific work on highlighting LLM regional preferences when it comes to cultural-related questions. In this work, we propose a new dataset based on a comprehensive taxonomy of Culture-Related Open Questions (CROQ). The results show that, contrary to previous cultural bias work, LLMs show a clear tendency towards countries such as Japan. Moveover, our results show that when prompting in languages such as English or other high-resource ones, LLMs tend to provide more diverse outputs and show less inclinations towards answering questions highlighting countries for which the input language is an official language. Finally, we also investigate at which point of LLM training this cultural bias emerges, with our results suggesting that the first clear signs appear after supervised fine-tuning, and not during pre-training.

IndoBias: A Dual Track Culturally Grounded Benchmark for LLMs Bias Evaluation in Indonesian Languages

Despite being home to more than 1300 ethnic groups and 700 indigenous languages, bias in Large Language Models has not been fully studied in Indonesia, thus leaving a critical gap in evaluating representational fairness and localized stereotypes within its uniquely vast, multilingual, and diverse sociocultural landscape. To address this, we introduce IndoBias as a culturally-grounded bias benchmark to assess LLMs bias in Indonesian and three local languages: Javanese, Sundanese, and Makasar. IndoBias features dual perspective evaluation tracks: depth-oriented (with contrastive-pairs) and breadth-oriented (with generation-based), where the latter is grounded in social science frameworks (SPI, O*NET, and WGI). Our results show that existing LLMs -- particularly decoder models -- exhibit strong bias towards prototypical sentences in Indonesian, while local languages suffer higher bias under Ideology and Religion category. We also find that LLMs responses exhibit a non-uniform Stereotype Polarity when prompted with various local entities. Finally, we discover that, in Indonesian, Common Crawl texts introduce more bias during pretraining, compared to human-reviewed article texts (e.g., Wikipedia, News), whereas introducing local languages to pretraining generally increases bias. This work highlights the importance of studying bias in culture-specific context. Warning: This paper contains example data that may be offensive, harmful, or biased.

The GaoYao Benchmark: A Comprehensive Framework for Evaluating Multilingual and Multicultural Abilities of Large Language Models

Evaluating the multilingual and multicultural capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) is essential for their global utility. However, current benchmarks face three critical limitations: (1) fragmented evaluation dimensions that often neglect deep cultural nuances; (2) insufficient language coverage in subjective tasks relying on low-quality machine translation; and (3) shallow analysis that lacks diagnostic depth beyond simple rankings. To address these, we introduce GaoYao, a comprehensive benchmark with 182.3k samples, 26 languages and 51 nations/areas. First, GaoYao proposes a unified framework categorizing evaluation tasks into three cultural layers (General Multilingual, Cross-cultural, Monocultural) and nine cognitive sub-layers. Second, we achieve native-quality expansion by leveraging experts to rigorously localize subjective benchmarks into 19 languages and synthesizing cross-cultural test sets for 34 cultures, surpassing prior coverage by up to 111%. Third, we conduct an in-depth diagnostic analysis on 20+ flagship and compact LLMs. Our findings reveal significant geographical performance disparities and distinct gaps between tasks, offering a reliable map for future work.
