A Marketplace for AI-Generated Adult Content and Deepfakes

Abstract

Generative AI systems increasingly enable the production of highly realistic synthetic media. Civitai, a popular community-driven platform for AI-generated content, operates a monetized feature called Bounties, which allows users to commission the generation of content in exchange for payment. To examine how this mechanism is used and what content it incentivizes, we conduct a longitudinal analysis of all publicly available bounty requests collected over a 14-month period following the platform's launch. We find that the bounty marketplace is dominated by tools that let users steer AI models toward content they were not trained to generate. At the same time, requests for content that is "Not Safe For Work" are widespread and have increased steadily over time, now comprising a majority of all bounties. Participation in bounty creation is uneven, with 20% of requesters accounting for roughly half of requests. Requests for "deepfake" - media depicting identifiable real individuals - exhibit a higher concentration than other types of bounties. A nontrivial subset of these requests involves explicit deepfakes despite platform policies prohibiting such content. These bounties disproportionately target female celebrities, revealing a pronounced gender asymmetry in social harm. Together, these findings show how monetized, community-driven generative AI platforms can produce gendered harms, raising questions about consent, governance, and enforcement.

From Celebrities to Anyone: Characterizing AI Nudification Content, Technology, and Community Dynamics on 4chan

AI nudification uses generative models to create synthetic non-consensual sexually explicit imagery (SNEACI) of real individuals. Prior work has examined dedicated nudification platforms and model repositories, finding that most targets are female celebrities. However, the anonymous content community, where SNEACI is actively requested, generated, and exchanged, remains unexplored. In this work, we present a large-scale study of AI nudification in the wild, identifying 24,105 SNEACI items. We find a significant shift in target demographics: non-celebrity individuals now account for 55.8% of targets, compared to only 4.7% in prior studies, indicating that AI nudification has expanded from targeting public figures to increasingly harming individuals within users' own social circles. Meanwhile, open-source models dominate production, with Stable Diffusion family generating 42.7% of images and Wan generating 66.5% of videos, all driven by thousands of shared fine-tuned models and accessible tutorials. Yet the ecosystem runs on a small cohort of active producers, with the most prolific producing 780 items, drives community engagement, shapes target demographics, and disseminates technical knowledge that lowers barriers for new producers. Our work provides an empirical understanding of how AI nudification operates in the wild, revealing the mechanisms that sustain this ecosystem and highlighting the urgent need for interventions in platform governance, technical safeguards, and affected individual protection.

Deepfake Media Generation and Detection in the Generative AI Era: A Survey and Outlook

We survey deepfake generation and detection techniques, covering all deepfake media types: image, video, audio and multimodal content. We identify various kinds of deepfakes and construct taxonomies of deepfake generation and detection methods, illustrating the important groups of methods. Next, we gather datasets used for deepfake detection and provide updated rankings of the best performing detectors on the most popular datasets. In addition, we develop a novel multimodal benchmark to evaluate deepfake detectors on out-of-distribution content. The results indicate that state-of-the-art detectors fail to generalize to deepfakes generated by unseen generators. Fully AI-Generated Image Detection: Definition, Recent Advances and Challenges

Recent advances in visual generative models have enabled the creation of highly realistic, fully AI-generated images without relying on real source content. While beneficial for many applications, these models also pose significant societal risks, as they can be easily exploited to produce convincing Deepfakes. Detecting them represents a foundational yet challenging problem in AI media forensics, requiring detectors to reliably extract the inherent artifacts imprinted by generative architectures. In this Review, we provide a systematic overview of fully AI-generated image detection. Following the standard detector design pipeline, we focus on two key components: dataset construction and artifact extraction. We analyze how dataset design influences the generalization and robustness of learned artifacts, and categorize existing artifact extraction methods based on the primary inductive priors leveraged to isolate artifacts. Within this framework, we systematically review existing works. Finally, we highlight open problems and envision several future directions for developing more robust and generalizable detectors.
