Abstract

This paper proposes Omni Dense Captioning, a novel task designed to generate continuous, fine-grained, and structured audio-visual narratives with explicit timestamps. To ensure dense semantic coverage, we introduce a six-dimensional structural schema to create "script-like" captions, enabling readers to vividly imagine the video content scene by scene, akin to a cinematographic screenplay. To facilitate research, we construct OmniDCBench, a high-quality, human-annotated benchmark, and propose SodaM, a unified metric that evaluates time-aware detailed descriptions while mitigating scene boundary ambiguity. Furthermore, we construct a training dataset, TimeChatCap-42K, and present TimeChat-Captioner-7B, a strong baseline trained via SFT and GRPO with task-specific rewards. Extensive experiments demonstrate that TimeChat-Captioner-7B achieves state-of-the-art performance, surpassing Gemini-2.5-Pro, while its generated dense descriptions significantly boost downstream capabilities in audio-visual reasoning (DailyOmni and WorldSense) and temporal grounding (Charades-STA). CineCap: Structured Reasoning with Spatio-Temporal Anchors for Cinematographic Video Captioning

Cinematographic captioning aims to describe how a video is filmed using professional film-language concepts such as camera movement, shot size, depth of field, composition, and shooting angle. This capability is important for fine-grained video understanding and controllable movie-quality video generation, yet remains underexplored in existing multimodal large language models. Unlike question-answering-based evaluation of cinematic understanding, cinematographic captioning requires a unified open-form description over multiple cinematographic dimensions. This task is challenging for two main reasons: the model must infer professional cinematographic concepts from subtle visual evidence, and it must generate captions that are both comprehensive and accurate. Accordingly, we propose CineCap, a framework that combines structured reasoning with spatio-temporal anchors and reinforcement learning with comprehensiveness, accuracy, and gated coverage rewards. The former grounds professional cinematographic descriptions in explicit visual evidence and organizes them into compact atomic reasoning for supervised fine-tuning, while the latter improves the balance between descriptive completeness and factual correctness. In addition, we construct CineCap Bench, a benchmark of 472 manually annotated video-caption pairs for systematic evaluation. Extensive experiments show that CineCap consistently outperforms strong proprietary and open-source baselines, establishing a new state of the art for cinematographic captioning. The code, model checkpoint, and benchmark are publicly available in https://github.com/Hectormxy/CineCap.git.

CodecCap: High-Fidelity Codec-Inspired Residual Modeling for Dense Video Captioning

Existing video captioning methods struggle to balance visual fidelity and redundancy: holistic captions are compact but lose fine-grained evidence, whereas segment-wise captions improve coverage but introduce heavy redundancy. We propose CodecCap, a codec-inspired framework for high-fidelity dense video captioning. Analogous to video codecs, CodecCap represents videos using keyframe and residual captions. Keyframe captions exhaustively encode stable visual context, while residual captions capture temporally only localized actions, motions and changes. This effectively preserves fine-grained visual evidence while reducing redundant descriptions. To quantify the fidelity of captions, we introduce VidCapQA, a caption-then-QA benchmark with 1,000 questions across 14 capability dimensions. Results on VidCapQA show that captions directly generated by strong VLMs still miss many visual details, highlighting caption representation as a critical bottleneck. Experiments show that CodecCap significantly surpasses direct captioning with the same underlying VLMs, suggesting keyframe-residual captioning a way for high-fidelity video-language supervision. We further use CodecCap to construct CodecVDC-100K, a large-scale dense captioning dataset with anchor, residual, scene-level, and video-level supervision.

TimeLens2: Generalist Video Temporal Grounding with Multimodal LLMs

Video multimodal large language models (MLLMs) can describe what happens in a video, but rarely identify when the supporting evidence occurs. We study generalist video temporal grounding, in which one model predicts a variable-cardinality set of evidence intervals across video lengths, domains, query forms, and viewpoints. Existing training strategies are misaligned with this set-valued task: long-video labels often rely on brittle one-pass annotation, while reinforcement-learning rewards either fail to distinguish non-overlapping predictions or require fragile segment matching. TimeLens2 treats temporal evidence as an interval set throughout supervision and optimization. TimeLens2-93K constructs reliable multi-span supervision through caption-derived proposals, independent localization, cross-agent consensus, semantic verification, and boundary refinement. Our temporal Wasserstein reward computes exact one-dimensional W1W_1 between uniform distributions over merged interval supports, providing dense, matching-free feedback under unequal cardinalities and equivalent fragmentation; temporal IoU complements it with precise-overlap feedback. Across seven benchmarks, TimeLens2-2B outperforms all size-matched baselines on every benchmark, while the 4B and 8B variants achieve state-of-the-art performance, surpassing open-source models with up to 397B parameters. The 2B, 4B, and 8B variants improve over their Qwen3-VL backbones by 14.2, 13.0, and 18.1 mIoU points, respectively.
