Abstract

Human motion understanding and generation are crucial for vision and robotics but remain limited in reasoning capability and test-time planning. We propose MoRL, a unified multimodal motion model trained with supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards. Our task-specific reward design combines semantic alignment and reasoning coherence for understanding with physical plausibility and text-motion consistency for generation, improving both logical reasoning and perceptual realism. To further enhance inference, we introduce Chain-of-Motion (CoM), a test-time reasoning method that enables step-by-step planning and reflection. We also construct two large-scale CoT datasets, MoUnd-CoT-140K and MoGen-CoT-140K, to align motion sequences with reasoning traces and action descriptions. Experiments on HumanML3D and KIT-ML show that MoRL achieves significant gains over state-of-the-art baselines. Code: https://github.com/AIGeeksGroup/MoRL. IRG-MotionLLM: Interleaving Motion Generation, Assessment and Refinement for Text-to-Motion Generation

Recent advances in motion-aware large language models have shown remarkable promise for jointly learning motion understanding and generation knowledge. However, these models typically treat understanding and generation separately, limiting the mutual benefits that could arise from interactive feedback between tasks. In this work, we reveal that motion assessment and refinement tasks can act as crucial bridges to enable knowledge flow from motion understanding to generation. Specifically, we propose Interleaved Reasoning for Motion Generation (IRMoGen), a novel paradigm that tightly couples motion generation with assessment and refinement through iterative text-motion dialogue. To realize this, we introduce IRG-MotionLLM, the first model that seamlessly interleaves motion generation, assessment, and refinement to improve the alignment between generated motion and goal text. IRG-MotionLLM is developed progressively with a novel three-stage training scheme, initializing and subsequently enhancing native IRMoGen capabilities. To facilitate this development, we construct an automated data engine to synthesize interleaved reasoning annotations from existing text-motion datasets. Extensive experiments demonstrate the properties brought by IRMoGen training, and the advanced cross-benchmark and cross-evaluator performance of IRG-MotionLLM. Re2^2MoGen: Open-Vocabulary Motion Generation via LLM Reasoning and Physics-Aware Refinement

Text-to-motion (T2M) generation aims to control the behavior of a target character via textual descriptions. Leveraging text-motion paired datasets, existing T2M models have achieved impressive performance in generating high-quality motions within the distribution of their training data. However, their performance deteriorates notably when the motion descriptions differ significantly from the training texts. To address this issue, we propose Re2^2MoGen, a Reasoning and Refinement open-vocabulary Motion Generation framework that leverages enhanced Large Language Model (LLM) reasoning to generate an initial motion planning and then refine its physical plausibility via reinforcement learning (RL) post-training. Specifically, Re2^2MoGen consists of three stages: We first employ Monte Carlo tree search to enhance the LLM's reasoning ability in generating reasonable keyframes of the motion based on text prompts, specifying only the root and several key joints' positions to ease the reasoning process. Then, we apply a human pose model as a prior to optimize the full-body poses based on the planned keyframes and use the resulting incomplete motion to supervise fine-tuning a pre-trained motion generator via a dynamic temporal matching objective, enabling spatiotemporal completion. Finally, we use post-training with physics-aware reward to refine motion quality to eliminate physical implausibility in LLM-planned motions. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our framework can generate semantically consistent and physically plausible motions and achieve state-of-the-art performance in open-vocabulary motion generation.

Open-UniMo: Towards Unified Motion-Language Understanding and Generation in the Open World

Unified motion generation and understanding is crucial for embodied AI systems that can both synthesize and interpret human actions in open-world environments. Existing motion-language models often treat motion as an auxiliary modality of a language model, leading to text-dominated representations and limited cross-modal interaction. Moreover, the next-token prediction paradigm is not naturally suited to long motion sequences, where autoregressive generation may accumulate prediction errors. To address these challenges, we propose Open-UniMo, a unified Large Motion-Language Model (LMLM) trained on million-scale open-world motion-language data. Open-UniMo promotes modality parity by extending Qwen's vocabulary of about 150K text tokens with 64K motion tokens, enabling motion and language to share a unified token space. We further introduce motion-consistent Chain-of-Thought reasoning as an intermediate representation to bridge language semantics and motion dynamics. Open-UniMo is trained with a two-stage pipeline, where supervised fine-tuning establishes CoT-guided bidirectional motion-language mapping and Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO) improves semantic alignment while mitigating cumulative errors in autoregressive motion-token generation. To support comprehensive evaluation, we propose Open-MoBench, a VLM-guided benchmark for assessing text-to-motion (T2M) generation, motion-to-text (M2T) understanding, and bidirectional consistency. Extensive experiments show that Open-UniMo achieves state-of-the-art performance on both conventional metrics and Open-MoBench. Furthermore, ablation studies reveal that M2T understanding is not primarily limited by motion-token vocabulary size; instead, coupling M2T with the learnable T2M generation path yields stronger cross-modal representations, demonstrating that generation can facilitate understanding in AR-based motion-language modeling.
