UniTAF: A Modular Framework for Joint Text-to-Speech and Audio-to-Face Modeling

Abstract

This work considers merging two independent models, TTS and A2F, into a unified model to enable internal feature transfer, thereby improving the consistency between audio and facial expressions generated from text. We also discuss the extension of the emotion control mechanism from TTS to the joint model. This work does not aim to showcase generation quality; instead, from a system design perspective, it validates the feasibility of reusing intermediate representations from TTS for joint modeling of speech and facial expressions, and provides engineering practice references for subsequent speech expression co-design. UNITE-AUDIO: Joint Learning of Continuous Tokenization and Latent Flow Matching for Text-to-Audio Generation

Text-to-audio (TTA) generation aims to synthesize realistic audio that faithfully reflects natural-language descriptions. Most TTA systems adopt a two-stage latent paradigm: an audio tokenizer is optimized for reconstruction and then frozen, after which a generative model is trained in the resulting latent space. However, reconstruction-oriented representations may be suboptimal for generation, motivating joint representation and generative learning. To this end, we introduce Unite-Audio, to our knowledge, is the first to jointly learn continuous audio representations and latent flow matching for TTA. By coupling reconstruction with self-supervised generative prediction, Unite-Audio allows the generative objective to directly shape the latent space rather than treating it as a fixed intermediate representation. We further employ Flow-GRPO post-training to improve text-conditioned generation. Experiments show competitive TTA performance with a compact latent flow model, while ablation studies confirm the benefit of jointly learning the audio representation and generative model. Talker-T2AV: Joint Talking Audio-Video Generation with Autoregressive Diffusion Modeling

Joint audio-video generation models have shown that unified generation yields stronger cross-modal coherence than cascaded approaches. However, existing models couple modalities throughout denoising via pervasive attention, treating high-level semantics and low-level details in a fully entangled manner. This is suboptimal for talking head synthesis: while audio and facial motion are semantically correlated, their low-level realizations (acoustic signals and visual textures) follow distinct rendering processes. Enforcing joint modeling across all levels causes unnecessary entanglement and reduces efficiency. We propose Talker-T2AV, an autoregressive diffusion framework where high-level cross-modal modeling occurs in a shared backbone, while low-level refinement uses modality-specific decoders. A shared autoregressive language model jointly reasons over audio and video in a unified patch-level token space. Two lightweight diffusion transformer heads decode the hidden states into frame-level audio and video latents. Experiments on talking portrait benchmarks show Talker-T2AV outperforms dual-branch baselines in lip-sync accuracy, video quality, and audio quality, achieving stronger cross-modal consistency than cascaded pipelines.

DUET: Unified Dual-Space Emotion Control for Diffusion and Flow-Matching Driven Text-to-Speech

Diffusion and flow-matching based text-to-speech (TTS) models excel in naturalness but often lack explicit emotion control, as emotional signals remain entangled with speaker identity. We discover that emotion embedding emerges as a linearly decodable direction of frozen hidden states, nearly orthogonal to the direction embedding speaker identity. This inspires a plug-and-play framework DUET for emotion control over pretrained diffusion and flow-matching based TTS models. During generation, DUET unifies dual-space control to achieve fine-grained emotion intervention in a single per-step update: hidden space steering shifts generation along the target emotion direction, while mel-space guidance refines spectral details through gradients backpropagated from a differentiable vocoder. We validate DUET on five architecturally diverse pretrained TTS backbones across three datasets, where it outperforms 10 supervised state-of-the-art emotional TTS baselines across paradigms and achieves the highest human-rated emotion appropriateness. To further showcase its qualitative behavior, we deploy DUET on an Ameca humanoid robot, where it produces richly expressive emotional speech on the humanoid, demonstrating the strong potential for plug-and-play affective interaction for embodied agents.
